Good review, and thank you for avidly supporting the propmakers who poured their time, money, energy, and love into their craft! I bought LSP's old version via Rubbertoe Replicas when it first became available. This has always been one of my favorite props, on the show and I spent very many hours and days of my own starting years ago, trying to make a screen accurate version, so I immediately ordered it when I saw it on the website back then. (The specific wallet I got seemed to have a few inaccurate issues, but it's still the closest I've ever seen / had to screen accuracy.) 0:33 I think you meant Peter Capaldi (Twelfth Doctor) as he was the one who used the Paul Smith wallet for a short time until he switched back to the original style wallet 2:53 I remember seeing your old review of another psychic paper-inspired recreation where it referenced the original prop as a "passport wallet" and it always bothered me, so I'm glad the screen-used prop's origins are being made known to more people
I have actually had this since before they started selling through Rubbertoe, I just wasn't really active on this channel... so now I'm going back and reviewing stuff I should have done long ago. And, yeah, I did mean Capaldi, I just mis-remembered when that change happened. I was literally thinking it was during Smith, probably because there were so many other changes at that time. The old review was a written one of a Psychic Paper from DarthMule on the RPF... and it's still quite a lovely piece and great for what we knew at the time, but this one frankly blows it out of the water, in essentially every conceivable metric. Thanks for watching, I have more Doctor Who stuff coming up soon, but I'm trying to avoid making it a Doctor Who channel, so I'm trying to spread them out a bit. The last thing I want is anyone making a VoteSaxon comparison 0_0
Again, interesting to understand all the different types. James
Looking forward to getting some this information from you! James
Really interesting, thanks for explaining all this! James

@@PropsmithReplicas True fair play and you 🙏
I do not see why would I buy it, instead of just making it myself. Cutting old driving licence holder is not complicated. I have seen this prop's price, it is very expensive for what it is! Completely not worth it.
I suppose that's on me for not mentioning: The actual Driving License holder is IMPOSSIBLE to find. If you could get your hands on one... yeah, it'd be a real easy conversion. But I've been trying to find one for over 10 years to no avail. In fact, I literally can't even find a PHOTO of one on the internet. Literally the only photos I can find are the ones in the video... and those were taken by James at Little Shop Props of the one they were able to source. So, given their rarity, if you DID find one, it would likely cost FAR more than this replica. Could you grab some relatively close wallet and make a rough approximation of the prop? Absolutely. But if you want a PERFECT replica, this is the option you've got. There is no other. But I always encourage people to make their own props! Take a swing at it, I'd love to see what you come up with! And thanks for watching!
Nice work! I'm always amazed at the amount of detail put into screen-used props, replicas, and everything else. Thanks for breaking this down!

Dunno if you’ll see this but great video dude, I have one of the Rubbertoe V2’s and it’s my favourite prop replica of all time, Nick has really improved when it comes to replicating these sonics, and I’m glad I own one, only reason I didn’t get the first edition was because of how lacklustre the flicking seemed to be and because of how fragile it was in comparison to the CT.
Yeah, Nick’s doing top-notch work and he’s a good bloke on top of it!
Great video.

Immaculate execution, especially relatively speaking. I’m curious to the value this might be appraised. What sorts of other props have you ever considered making, if time and money were never a consideration, for example, what might you like to have in your collection you haven’t already made?
I've got quite an extensive list of things I plan on getting to... top of the list is the Colt from Supernatural (full steel!), also want to do the TVA TemPed from Loki, The VFD Spyglass from A Series of Unfortunate Events, and a couple fun items from WareHouse 13, and honestly just an endless list. Not sure what order I'll get to things, but I'll have full build videos for each (more detailed than this one)! And thanks for the kind words!
Still love your poster to this day. framed and always in prime position.
SO glad you're enjoying it! It was really a years-long labor of love.
Brilliant work. I'm rewatching the series and I would so love one of those!
Great video
Do you know who owns the original poster? I couldn’t find anything online.
Yoko owns it. I imagine it’ll eventually pass on to Sean.
Thanks!
Yours is better, John told me so.
Why not factor in price?
I think CT still wins the price battle, as in the original video and I really just wanted to focus on what the major shortcomings were of the original Rubbertoe to see how the new one stacks up.
I purchased a CT in October off the CT site. It arrived three weeks ago (I got sonic 362). Now, I can’t speak for the quality of the original ones compared to the newer ones, but in all honesty I think my sonic came out great. When polished it looks sleek, and everything seems in order. The flick is phenomenal and there’s no funky pieces or anything of the sort. I’m glad I got it. I understand some have complained about a decrease in quality, so for all I know I just got lucky. Furthermore, when emailing CT about anything, I always made sure I was very cordial and understanding. He replied fast with short responses but seemed friendly nonetheless. The only complaint I have, and this is a small one, is that the red emitter included as a bonus wasn’t filed/sanded/shaved down fully, so when screwed on and extended, two of the claws sometimes get caught on the bottom resin. Sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to provide a bit of info to anyone curious and was thinking of getting a CT. Again, it’s possible I just got lucky.
What is his email? Thinking of buying a ct aswell, glad yours was made well and sturdy
Ah, fancy seeing you here! (One of the old group.) Nice comparison.
on one of your previous videos you insulted people for wanting to de-construct their sonics, but you do it yourself?
I have no recollection of that. Can you point me to the comment you refer to?
calling people "cheap bastards" for not being able to spend $100+ on a sonic in insane, not to mention the fact that this is designed to be a toy for kids, not a replica
I felt like that was pretty clearly a tongue-in-cheek joke and not meant seriously. I am aware that it’s a toy and said so in the video, but noted that I was reviewing it in terms of being an option to use as a prop replica. Honestly, I didn’t want to have to do that, but I knew people would come at me if I didn’t include it. I treated it with the same level of criticism that I would give any prop replica, not allowing for its intended use as a toy. And, given the fact that you can’t find one of these under $100 anymore, I think that was the right move. Clearly, it’s being bought by more than just children. But thanks for watching to the end! I’ll have a lot more content coming soon, so be on the lookout!
Love these videos! ...would you consider doing a review of the Rubbertoe classic sonics?
How can I buy a copy.
It’s available on Etsy: www.etsy.com/listing/756193492/
The poster advertised a fair/circus held at Town Meadows, Rochdale in Lancashire. Rochdale is my home town and is about 12 miles from the city centre of Manchester. Town Meadows no longer exists, it is largely covered by Rochdale Police Station and the War Memorial Gardens.
recently started getting into the whole replica/cosplay scene and was wondering if you knew how often rubbertoe does runs of their 11th sonic? I know CT is done making new ones and is just selling leftover stock now (which i've heard has severely dropped in quality), so I was trying to see how often rubbertoe does runs of past props.
Rubbertoe JUST put another batch on sale a couple months back, but to my knowledge all units have been purchased and he said on his Instagram that this will be the final run, of the model he’s replicating at least. I actually happened to be one of the people who managed to purchase the replica in time. So unfortunately, you might be out of luck when it comes to Rubbertoe. There are some 11th Doctor Universal Remotes being sold online which are said to be surprisingly SUPER good replicas even if it wasn’t intended to be one, though be weary that they’re fairly expensive, and sadly don’t flick open. If you’re left with absolutely NO choice, and wouldn’t dare resorting to the ugly Character Options toy unless you’re on a strict budget, Celestial Toystore sonic screwdrivers still make the cut even if they aren’t as illustrious as they once were. I purchased and received one earlier this year, and while it definitely had some issues I was still happy with it. It was still fun to “sonic” things and flick it open. But with that said, PLEASE handle it with care. Mine recently broke during transit on an airplane ride since I didn’t secure it properly enough I guess, and further more when I tried inspecting the issue. So be sure to handle it with ample care. Unless Rubbertoe decides to do another run of his screwdrivers, CT is likely the only option if you want something legit. You might have to sacrifice a marginal amount of quality but keep your expectations tempered and you should be content with the final product.
I bought a 10th doctor screwdriver from CT... the end kind of broke with the slider... he had me ship it to him and list it as a 25 dollar toy flashlight. I sent it off... it vanished during shipping... he told me it happens sometimes and not to worry about it, never made it to destination, he stopped responding to me, and I'm pretty sure i paid close to 300 for it. So... I ended up with nothing.
That’s tragic. I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with that. The issue with his being based in China to avoid copyright claims also means he’s pretty untouchable from this perspective. The only advice I can offer is, if you paid with a credit card, try to do a chargeback. Unfortunately, if you paid with debit, that’s probably not possible. And, in the future, don’t listen to people who tell you to ship things with a low declared value. What they’re doing is asking you to risk the loss of your item so that they can avoid paying much of an import fee. And I can tell you for certain: CT is fucking LOADED. He can afford the import duty in order to fix his own faulty product.
@@PropsmithReplicas it was a long time ago
@@KYPT0KNIGHT Shame.
I ordered a CT sonic one week ago. I’ve heard differing opinions on the recent productions, with some saying they’ve lessened in quality and others saying they’re just as good. Regardless, I’m excited to see how it holds up when it ships (which could take awhile given the the shipping from China to eastern US)
Could you tell me how good it's quality is?
You got it yet?
@@nextofkin2321 hi, I got it back in the middle/beginning of February. So far it’s good. It looks amazing when polished, and the flick on the sonic I got is pretty good. Sometimes it gets a little tight and finicky but I think the Cape Cod polish I use lubricates it to flick better. The only complaint I have is that the red emitter that came with it isn’t fully sanded down on the bottom, so it screws on a little wonky but it still works I suppose.
You people really to cut this guy some slack here, a reason for the CO being there could be because Character Options make the sonics so when kids play with them and feel like the doctor so in that respect it is a replica and same goes for TWC one it’s just slightly more snazzy so all of you should just chill with all these complaints
just a small correction - the pommel and collar ARE actually screen accurate, but to the later version of the sonic that has been used by 12th Doctor. Nick actually revamped and upgraded his initial design for series 8-9 - mostly to make it stronger and less finicky. You can see the 1st gen and 2gen prop pictures side by side on his website where he talks about the history of the prop. So to sum it up, the v2 is kinda the best of both words - the stronger design from later seasons plus the button from the gen 1. I personally prefer the look of the collar from the gen1 but Nick probably had his reason to update the design for the prop to be more sturdier.
Hey! Sorry I somehow missed the notification for this comment when it posted, or I’d have responded sooner. Before doing this review, I spoke to Nick and he told me that this version was based on the original four filming props, so that’s the metric I used for this breakdown. But taking the later revisions into account actually makes this even more confusing… because apparently this has a hinged pommel, as used by 11, but with the dimensions of the hinge-less pommel of the 12? I think the scores would remain unchanged, honestly. But thanks so much for the extra context and please don’t hesitate to let me know if I make any factual errors in the future!
I have to admit, this review really rubs me the wrong way. Beyond the fact that you're including a toy in a replica comparison video, the rating system is inconsistent (ties aren't allowed but you'll skip numbers and also assign 0 points?), you miss out on the accuracy of various features and functions (the CO sounds are other sound effects the sonic makes in the show), and your "objective" point assignment system is really just a personal ranking based on factors you find important. I'm not even sure why you included the WC model, since that one is intended to be a functional thing and so will necessarily take liberties with accuracy. I think if you're going to include things that aren't pure replicas, you should probably not try to rank them as replicas, and instead talk about how they might appeal to other audiences. If you're going to talk about how you aren't a toy reviewer, you shouldn't review toys.
I don't know what to tell you, bud. I included the CO because not doing so would have resulted in a hundred people asking why I didn't include it. The point was to review all the replicas of this prop that were available at the time, and I did so in the most consistent and objective way I could, leaving aside my personal thoughts. I don't think the ratings would have come out any differently in terms of ranking if I had done some of the things you suggested... like, the CO's extra sounds weren't going to put it up over the Rubbertoe in a million years. And making a review for different audiences ins't what I do. It's not a Doctor Who channel, it's a prop channel. That said, I have full, individual reviews of each of these four that judge them on their own merits, rather than against one-another. I think the video is fair, and I think I communicated pretty well at the top what to expect. Sorry to have not met your expectations.
Did you ever get around to the 10th Doctor's sonic in the end? I saw that you were originally planning to.
No, I couldn’t get my hands on an MFX and now there are SO MANY varieties of the 9/10 available that the video would be 2 hours long and probably obsolete the moment it came out.
Though I agree the first RR was built poorly, based on the photos of the film used props, the first RR would be the more screen accurate because it has them flaws like the gaps. I have a RR version 2 which is far better quality
what edition number do you have
I wonder how difficult (if possible at all) it would be to essentially take the accurate bits from both Sonics to create the ultimate replica. i.e. the top of the Rubbertoe, the angled collar of the CT, the Rubbertoe leather and white handles, and the CT pommel. Probably not worth potentially damaging two rare items.
The only parts you’d be able to swap between the two would really be the black leather section and the white handle. The pommel, in particular, is made completely differently on the two. The CT is male, with the body of the sonic as the female, and it’s opposite on the Rubbertoe. For me, I’d be happiest with the Rubbertoe for most of the sonic, replacing only the pommel with the CT.
11:35 the poster. Great job at reproduction! I have seen some really bad, inaccurate versions.
It is hard to find anything much online about Warehouse 13. I remember finding this video way back when and thinking I was going to make one. It was a fun show!
yoooooooo i want one so bad

@@smithel3538 you haven't seen 13th sonic screwdriver didn't you?

Agreed. I'm not gonna spend hundreds of pounds on 1 to 1 replicas like this guy! A co sonic screwdriver is good enough for me.
Context matters. What you're quoting is given in the context of having watched this video and making a purchase based of it. He was saying that if you sat through this video to see which screwdriver to buy, and chose the CO, then you don't care about quality or accuracy. He's not saying that anyone who bought a CO doesn't care about quality or accuracy.
@@LiveHedgehogEXACTLY, I bought the CO and because I care about accuracy I bought aluminum tape and tape that looks like copper along with a bunch of other stuff to make it look like the prop which cost me about £10.00 altogether so people who can’t afford the replicas and don’t mind modifying the toys could do that
Im hoping to order a 11th ct sonic this week just worried about it having postige to pay
How do you get the Wand Company one to flick open? Because when it arrives you can only use the standard version
The one in the video is the one marketed as the 12th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, which does flick open. Regardless of how it was marketed, this sonic design I consider to be the 11th.
You can take off the CO emitter
how
@@frostwing1899you need to really give it a yank but it does work, but also be very careful whilst doing it and only do it if you really really want to
I'm not sure if you even still look at comments on this video. But since the touch control is technically from the Peter Capaldi era. We could say that removable core could be from the episode Into The Dalek. Because the Doctor removes a core from his sonic.
Yeah, that's a thing that happened in the story, but not to the actual prop. If you watch the scene, it's all pantomime. You never see the core because no core was ever created for the prop. In a replica comparison, I have to take off points. It's worth noting that if I were reviewing it as a toy, that and the touch control would have both earned it extra points! But toy reviews aren't what I do.
@@PropsmithReplicas I don't even have the CO one myself. I actually have the Wand Company Sonic. But I really want a CT Sonic. But I never got the chance.
