    I don't know much about this but I find the topic really interesting. The shading, the fonts, ect. It's just amazing how the poster of the video compares it to a very low quality image

    You did an excellent job. Fine eye for detail. Great work. Peter should have consulted with YOU during his project and given credit, of course.

    I don't know if this is of any use to you or Peter Dean, but John Lennon's (previously unseen in public) original copy, still in the frame (as photographed behind Lennon) is currently on display at the John and Yoko exhibition at Liverpool Museum, on the waterfront, near the recent statues of the Beatles. It's hard to get a clear photograph because of reflections on the glass case, but it does give you a good chance to estimate the exact overall dimensions (take a tape measure). The photos I took tend to back up your theory about a crease causing the 'thin F', because quite a few letters above and below the 'F' are also affected. However, there does seem to be a swoosh (similar to the Nike icon) at the base of the illustration of the man though, as on Peter Dean's. If either you or Peter Dean would like to answer this comment, leaving an email address, I'll forward the photos I recently took on my phone; they're not brilliant, but still excellent reference, especially to the detail evident on the man's trunks/shorts, which are not triangles, as you surmised.

      I actually have exact dimensions and up-close photos provided by an associate at the Museum and will be re-doing my poster accordingly to make it the most accurate version possible... I will also be having it printed on a letterpress. Thanks for the offer, though. I wouldn't expect an update from Dean, because he seems not to care about accuracy. I only wish I had more time to work on it, but it WILL be coming.

      @@melongod2094 The Sgt Pepper's 50th anniversary poster is actually quite lacking... The overall image of the carvings is pretty blotchy by comparison, with a lot of detail left out. They also used some "close enough" modern fonts that are sometimes pretty noticeably different (no one but me seems ever to have noticed that the O in "Henderson" is round in the middle, for example). And the greek border is missing a few details: the thin second stroke, the tiny gaps between the border segments, and the two mis-oriented segments in the lower-left. It's really good, but still not quite there.

    How did you know what all that tiny text said? It's not at all legible in the Lennon photo. I have one of your prints BTW and love it.

    • @PropsmithReplicas
      @PropsmithReplicas  7 лет назад

      To be honest, other people had worked it out well enough that, going by the highest resolution picture available of the Lennon picture with some photoshoppery done to clean it up and make the text more distinct, it was pretty easy to verify what others had worked out. It would have been harder to work it out from scratch, but it would still have been do-able.

    I looked at the 2017 poster in the box set for sgt peppers and it does still appear that his is still the most accurate. There are some noticeable differences in the letter thickness especially with the “f” that has the crease going through it and the inside of the o’s are more oval looking and circle. That is just some of the stuff I noticed there are probably more inaccuracies if you look longer.

    • @PropsmithReplicas
      @PropsmithReplicas  5 лет назад

      They got some stuff right in the engraving that I could not make out at all, so I'll call it a draw. But my v2 will be the closest thing to the real thing that is even possible.
      ....if I can ever get the spare time to work on it.

    • @PropsmithReplicas
      @PropsmithReplicas  7 лет назад

      I haven't been able to find a good enough shot of it to make a proper judgement. If you have a link, I'm happy to weigh in.

    • @PropsmithReplicas
      @PropsmithReplicas  7 лет назад

      Okay, the best picture I can find is of the whole set and the poster is quite obscured, including some of the tell-tale features. But from what I can see, the art looks dead-on. Obviously, I'll need to have a closer look at the whole thing to know for sure, but I can tell that it lacks a lot of the inaccuracies that are on the Peter Dean poster (incorrect hashing on the somerset thrower's left arm, too-dense background hashing, lack of details on the figure's trunks, etc. are all CORRECT on the picture of the box set).
      It may even be that they got the original from Sean Lennon and scanned it, which would obviously make the art perfect. And if that's the case, I'm pretty proud because, so far, I can barely distinguish it from my replica. In any case, it'll still be mass-printed and drastically undersized. But I look forward to the set for a number of reasons!

    • @pietschreuders8311
      @pietschreuders8311 7 лет назад

      If Apple DID scan Lennon's original poster, I would have preferred to see the original scan, blemishes and all. This looks too cleaned-up to me, and therefore "fake-ish", if not downright fake. The ornate Greek border seems too perfect to be true. Check its distance to the artwork! The text "BEING FOR THE" looks like a computer Bodoni. Also, check the Henderson "O". On the other hand, the artwork looks quite good, and check the ornamentation of the swimming trunks!

    • @PropsmithReplicas
      @PropsmithReplicas  7 лет назад

      Yeah, having gotten a better look at it (thanks for that!) I would rank it probably on-par with the Peter Dean poster. On overall feature accuracy, it beats the Dean, but it still has inaccuracies (like that Henderson O) and the way they've chosen to do some of the hashing as zig-zagging lines, rather than how it would be as a woodcut is very disappointing. I also do like the definition on the trunks, but I can't say whether it's accurate or just an interpretation. Short of getting a better picture of the real poster, we may never know.

    Nice work, but honestly I don't think you're being quite fair to Peter Dean by comparing a Xerox copy of his recreation (far right above) to yours (in the middle). We all know how variable in quality Xerox copies can be. And the gray shade of the Xerox copy above at far right doesn't match the shade of the paper actually used in Peter Dean's copy (I know this because I have one of his--full disclosure), and that grey background in the Xerox copy you show above at far right detracts slightly from the contrast in values we see in it here at far right. Your copy of your recreation in the middle has a significantly lighter and warmer. tone to the paper shown here--and therefore sharper contrast. I don't mean to diminish your work here, but you're the one who's being competitive in your comparison with Peter Dean's work. And if you're going to be competitive, then you should be meticulously fair in the way you're making comparisons.

    • @PropsmithReplicas
      @PropsmithReplicas  3 года назад

      I felt that I was pretty fair, given that at the top of the video I very specifically state that I am using a printout which is in no way indicative of the actual quality of his product... which I state as being "of the absolute highest quality." I then state that this video is "ONLY a comparison of accuracy to the original--nothing else."
      I have done an updated video that you may find far more enlightening, as I have made a new version of the poster, which makes this entire video utterly obsolete. You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/MSseylYWaFQ/видео.html

    You are so right about the F. It ruins it for me. You can clearly see there is a fold and it seem ridiculous that he or the artist didn't realise that. Your reproduction is far better.
