Graham Vincent Violins
Великобритания
Добавлен 23 фев 2021
Somerset based violin maker and musician. I trained at the Musical Instrument Department of the London College of Furniture in the early 1980s. My career has moved through making, design, commercial design management and even architecture, but for the last few years I've been back where I'm happiest - at the bench full time. I make violins of my own design in a traditional style and even make my own boiled varnish.
In my spare time I've managed to perform at the last three Glastonbury Festivals with Mitchell and Vincent.
This channel will be about my violins and violin making, but also my day to day life so - the best I can say is, - it'll be varied. Isn't variety the spice of life??
Please like and subscribe to the channel!
You may also find my Instagram channel interesting, I have a lot more pictures on that.

I liked the applewood the best. It had a fuller tone than the rest. I was surprised.
Hi Graham, I've recently bought a bottle of Titebond Liquid Hide Glue. It shares many of the qualities of hide glue, but has a larger open time (10 to 15 min). I think it is not a collagen based glue, but something synthetic. It is to be used on a repair job (an old guitar that was put together with hide glue). Do you have any knowledge or experience with that? Specifically if it can be used succesfully on wood that was previously glued up with old fashioned hide glue. Tia. Jack
Hi Jack, I don't have any direct experience with it, but secondhand advice is that it's ok, but not as good as hot hide glue. Let us know how it goes!!
I love the figured ash all the curves of the cornerless. Dare i say the figure of a lovely lady. As usual i can't wait to see it finished.
great explanation and images. thanks for really showing the detail of how you add such character and movement to your F holes.
Thanks for demoing. I've been looking for one.
RUclips has been hiding your videos. Commenting for the algorithm. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the comment, I think it does help!
Ever since my Patreon failed to update, I haven't seen any youtube videos recommended. Had to go to your page to find this. Glad you're still helping! Thanks for everything!
Hi there, have you got the notification bell clicked on? How's everything going anyway?
@grahamvincentviolins I try to never give permission to apps. It's never stopped the algorithm from sending me your newest videos. I went looking when I hadn't seen one in a while; was worried something had happened!
What ball vice do you used while working on the neck, the yellow one? Where can it be purchased?
You need to watch this video of mine!! ruclips.net/video/1Anwj24k2bY/видео.html
Very thorough/detailed. Well explained
Glad you think so!
The low angle shots were very helpful and this is an incredibly useful tutorial. Many thanks!
You're very welcome!
Do you just make a bespoke new bit of scraper for whatever shape you’re after and add it to the collection for future use?
Originally exactly that, but I now have such a collection of odd shapes I can normally find something to suit the job in hand!!
Thank you for putting this information out there. I’d love to do a violin or other instrument with a butternut (juglens cinerea) I think it would comparable to the ash in some ways. Can’t wait to see the final result
Thanks, I wasn't familiar with butternut, but a quick google shows it's a nice looking timber. Is it resonant?
Makes perfect sense, I'm always a little nervous to scallop the f hole when the tops been thicknessed so I'll be trying this from now on.
Even if you don't end up doing exactly the same, it's nice to be reminded that there are alternatives to the generally stated norm!
Saved to my lutherie playlist! Thanks so much for this.
A pleasure.
Yes this video is useful to me at least. And your explanations make sense. Thanks for expounding on this topic. Dwelling on the fine points of a build adds a great deal of interest.
Glad it was helpful!
That made perfect sense. I just did exactly what you talked about by carving and scalloping the f-holes after I did the plate thickness. Some areas ended up thinner than I wanted. I even deliberately left the area thicker to accommodate the fluting and still got too thin. Hopefully it doesn’t end up sounding like a card in bicycle spokes.
Don't worry, I think we've all done exactly that at some stage!!
What angle do you sharpen the plane blade at. You mentioned that sometimes it can be sharpened at too steep of an angle.
Yes you are a bit all over the place but you emphasized the important stuff. And it adds flair and spark. I've been scouring the net lately to understand the process and yours is on the top among very few others. Cheers and keep up the great videos!
When you mention carving f-holes during the thicknessing of the front, how much material do you normally leave to work with while the f-holes are cut out?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your day with us. The top looks great so far. It certainly has a unique look with no corners.
Hello Graham! I love watching your work and can completely relate to violin/instrument making feeling so much more exciting, when compared to an office job. How do you adjust the violin for octave strings? I've looked a lot online, but haven't been able to find much definitive info. I assume the thickness is modified, but I'm still quite a novice violin maker. Thanks!
Graham buddy . always enjoy your work . nothing against the corner less violins but i do love the corners . but hey what ever makes you happy im just some old guy who loves watching people make beautiful things . your the master buddy god bless
Looks like a fine idea, removing bits from the mold seems to have a messy potential, sacrificing mold answers that question, thanks!
I am a guitar player and maker, and it is no different in this world. Fanatical, tradition cultists. What comes to mind is something I’ve heard about cameras, and that’s true about many things: the best camera is the one you have.
Nice to see a violin channel that has a fiddle / folk aspect to it😅
The problem is some Luthiers think their violins are worth $30,000 even when they are less then average😮
Wow, the sound is absolutely incredible! What an amazing gift, to turn ancient wood into music. Is it strung with viola strings? I didn't hear an E string sound (apologies if you mentioned this and I missed it).
@@kstella87 it’s set up as an octave violin, one octave below standard. I’m using Helicore octave strings.
Is there a way we could talk. And possibly order a violin?
Of course, get in touch - email is grahamvincentviolins@gmail.com and let’s arrange something.
Well that absolutely blew me away. I really was not expecting that sound. And the shape is exquisite as for the green man I love the scale and it really works. It's a work of art
Thanks very much, I made a lot of little choices to help the responsiveness of the body, I think it worked!
Hi Graham, I had an unrelated question about the violin with the sound post adjustment. I've just begun varnishing a violin for the first time and wanted to know why and how are the necks usually a lighter color? Thanks!
I recently had to cut down a dead apple orchard. I have lots of seasoned logs.
Whereabouts are you?
It would be a great fiddle but not a classical violin.
very nice
Thanks
Hey buddy. Rocking the Docker caps. Lol I got some a few weeks ago and haven’t had the confidence to try them in public but you know what I may now have to 😀❤️
@@andrewparish437 yes, questionable sartorial choices are my forte!
Really interesting and beautiful ... so English, somehow and the sound would work so well in Vaughn Williams or similar. Thanks so much
Glad you liked it!
That bog oak violin sounds like, well, chocolate. Delicious, warm and deep. Beautiful sound.
What a build! I always wondered why violin making isn't as daring as guitar making for example in the choice of woods, great to see it is possible. Just a heads up, there's a whistle noise on your voice-over track.
I'll have a look at using a different method for voice over, thanks!
I bet it will be excellent for playing JS Bog sonatas and partitas
It's a violin that says, menacingly, "I'm coming for you, viola!" The depth of the resonance in the lower register is really stunning.
Thanks!
I don't know how you feel about resin; a lot of woodworkers don't care for it. But maybe you might coat the end of the scroll into a layer of resin so that it's a core of wood with an outer layer of green resin. When you carve deeply into it, it'll reveal the wood, but the shallower parts will still be green. That way, you'll get a nice wooden face embedded in a mane of green leaves, and resin can take some very fine detail. And how perfect is a Green Man scroll for a fiddle built of bog oak! This is really beautiful. I love handmade, homebuilt, nontraditional classical instruments, especially violin family ones. Strings can be crippled by a slavish devotion to how things were done centuries ago, and it stifles creativity.
I do like the idea of colour and I've been thinking about this, but resin is basically plastic, something I'd prefer not to use.
A solid oak top amazing... Might as well put a shotgun to the carved head and pull the trigger
What's the wood smell like?
@@PcBguitarLibrary surprisingly oak like, considering its great age.
Very inspiring, your abandonment of conventional materials, and the resulting voice is just wonderful. Art has no license apparently, cheers! Thanks!
Thank you very much!
Curious if this bog timber exhibited any tonal qualities initially? It is apparent some of the sound produced is a result of builder finesse. Surprising sound from oak.
What a great attitude- nice to hear - and I’m from a lute making background!
Thanks James!
I am hatching a dream in my head and wondering what the minimum thickness of a blank plate might be. I have two desk tops that have been in my life 60+ years that I was thinking of making a solid guitar body from, but watching what you do makes me think of commissioning a lefty cornerless fiddle from one of them. I cannot identify either type, they don’t seem to match pine, beech, oak, mahogany, walnut or maple but I know next to nothing about wood identification. Just a thought… And for the record, the sound post holder (not the setter)you are using, like mine…. is bloody right handed!!! ;))
What strings have you fitted? I’m curious about is it the strings or the violin itself that produces the lower tone. I know you can purchase strings to make a violin sound similar to a viola. I like the colour, the green man carving is spectacular.
There are a couple of different makes of octave strings available now, I used the helicore on this. Most of the sound difference comes from decisions I made in thickness, bassbar etc in order to get the best bottom end. Apart from that it's exactly as per my violin plans for sale on my website.
Brilliant video Graham. What do you change about the body design. From a standard violin to an octave violin? Is the body size bigger. More like a viola? Thanks David
Body is the same as my standard cornerless in size and depth - as per the plans for sale on my website. I made a lot of choices to optimise response for the lower octave.
Thats me ordered a set of plans from you😊👍@@grahamvincentviolins
@@andersoninstruments I've just posted the set you ordered - but that wasn't cornerless.... message me!
That sounds absolutely wonderful! Makes me wonder why people are so stuck on having a spruce top, it sounds great.
I'm changing some peoples minds. one at a time!!
A lot of it has to do with tradition sadly! I've learned that a good top is: light, stiff, and stable. Whatever that shakes out to he wood wise is up to the craftsperson
I absolutely love that bog oak violin. Do you ever build something that you love so much that you just cant bear to part with it?
Beautiful
Thanks!
