Thanks very much Graham, the mechanics of both cradles is a big help. In my mind it was very complicated. You cleared it right up. The viola looks really good. More questions later!
Very nice Q&A this week. Thank you for explaining your rationale for using the hot glue knife in sections rather than doing the entire plate in one go.
Ok, the rotating vise clamp for the cradle at 15:55 is brilliant. I'm definitely filing that idea away into the old brain box. Cheers!
Hi Graham, can you please talk a bit about the ground layer before the varnish? What is used and why?
Also, what about the treatment of the inside of the violin? I've seen some makers who paint the inner surfaces with various concoctions.
Yes! I’m curious about this, as well. There’s an Italian maker on RUclips named Sofia Vettori, and she swears by using an internal treatment on her instruments. I think she uses some mixture of casein protein and egg whites?
I think Davide Sora does something similar.
I've used a mixture of casein and calcium hydroxide, which is what the cremonese makers use nowadays. It is just a process of applying it and washing it off again. Whether it has any significance is debatable but in the end it's not too much of a hassle.
