    Hi! I am thinking of switching my career to nursing and going to start applying for CNA, and then LVN, then RN. I was searching it up and there are programs that bridge from LVN to RN, how long would it take to bridge it if you don't mind answering. Thank you so much for reading.

    • @MaleNurseMentor
      @MaleNurseMentor Час назад

      Hello! It can depend on the program itself, but many programs are 1 year up to 2 years depending on how quickly someone can finish. Most still require pre-requisite classes prior to entering and some maybe even LVN work experience. I would start by looking at general programs in the area you’d plan to attend to get the most clear idea so you have a clear blueprint. Reach out if you have any questions.

      It depends which side of corrections. I noticed county has more LVNs, the prison actually has about the same for both LVNs and RNs. The prison hires a lot more nurses in general.

    Do you think it is unwise for someone with chronic back issues to become a nurse?

    • @MaleNurseMentor
      @MaleNurseMentor 6 дней назад

      It honestly would depend how it interferes with your mobility. If you’re putting yourself at risk to hurt your back more, I would question the career. Speaking to your doctor about it would be my recommendation and see what they recommend. Nursing does at least as your in school or bedside require moving patients.

    • @The_Pisces_Poet
      @The_Pisces_Poet 5 дней назад

      I’d say it depends on a few factors. By chronic is that constant? Or frequent flare ups? What causes the flare ups if so? How long do they last? Can you take something or do something to relieve the pain? Does chiropractic or massage treatment help? What’s your limits? How long can you stand and walk before the pain begins or aggravates? Nursing is EXTREMELY hard on the back, standing long hours, walking, bending, pushing, pulling. You will find yourself in very awkward and uncomfortable positions. You will have to move very obese patients or very deadweight patients. You may have to intervene in a split second situation where you need to move fast. I consider myself to have chronic back pain bc I have frequent flare ups of sciatica as well as chronic knee pain (yay military), which have both definitely been quite aggravated by my physical duties. Thankfully I have found that resting for a while (if I can), heat and ice as well as massage and PT have helped me greatly during these times. I will say that wearing the right shoes and always following proper body positioning saves your back 100x over, as well as making sure you’re working on building a strong core. A strong stable core is everything, not just in Nursing, and is one of the best ways to relieve chronic back pain (depending on the issue). Back problems are one of the leading causes of workplace injury in Nursing. I’m by no means trying to scare you off, we need as many good caring nurses as we can find, but I won’t sugarcoat it and say it’s no problem. Just a lot that goes into thinking about this. In the long run, you will definitely be able to have a more cushy desk job like telehealth or at a local clinic, but for your clinicals that are around 8 hrs a day 2 or more days a week for 13-16 weeks per semester, and the first couple years of your career, you will be very physical.

    Working in the prison setting actually sounds pretty cool for someone not that interested in bedside. Would you say the majority of your time is spent in the nurse station, doing patient intake, checking on inmates, etc? I wonder if you could give a brief percentage breakdown of an average day

    • @MaleNurseMentor
      @MaleNurseMentor 22 дня назад

      It was cool actually. It’s a unique experience you won’t feel in any other setting. Apart from all the surface stuff and logistical things like locked doors and always being aware of you surroundings - it’s still healthcare. There is a lot of nuance to your question, it all really depends. So to answer here is quit challenging. No day is typical is the best answer. County jail is different from prison, and in each of these areas there are many places to work as a nurse. Something like this may be easier for a DM or even a call, so reach out if your interested. I’d love to give you the scoop. I can give you an example of a county jail intake nurse. It’s about 70% patient facing. But a slower day or busier day can change this. I only say this because you can expect to see a patient inmate coming into jail every 10-30 minutes or so for the duration of your shift. When you’re not seeing a patient you chart or check on them in holding cells etc…

      @@MaleNurseMentor thanks for the info! I’ve actually not started nursing school yet but should within 6mo to a year and I just want to get a feel for what’s out there and this is not an avenue I was aware of. I’ve never heard of clinicals while in school rotating through these settings but I wonder if it’s something you could request? I don’t use social media or I would DM and I appreciate how helpful and knowledgeable you are!

      I think that’s wise of you. And as far as nursing rotations, I haven’t heard of one that rotates students through corrections. Given the setting I don’t imagine it’s considered often. It takes a long time to get clearance and it’s a highly secured area to even walk into. Let alone safety concerns.

    Thanks, Jessie. I wake up daily looking forward to your content (Instagram stories, RUclips videos) to hear you reiterate the truth. I want this for my future self. For the life i want to build. Struggle now. feast later. Side note: you don’t think 3 12’s is a solid schedule? I personally love the idea of it, though i hear they are typically very rigorous and tiring.

      Thanks Juan! I appreciate that, and that makes me happy to know. I personally wasn’t a fan of the 3-12’s. But I’m out of the norm. Most people do like the 12’s. I’m a fan of 5-8’s. In nursing school you’ll experience the 12’s and you may like them.

      Thank you! I wish your BF all the best. I always wanted to care for patient inmates the way I would have liked to be treated, especially because I knew they were someones family as well, who often worried about them.

    Hey man great video! I am starting my nursing program next month. My first degree is in criminal justice and I have always wanted to try correctional nursing. Excited to see where my journey takes me!

      @@Zach-pt6kz that’s honestly awesome man! I think you’d really enjoy correctional nursing. My first desire was to be in law enforcement , I decided to go into nursing instead. So when I graduated with my RN I went back to my interest and found corrections to be exactly what I needed. I now work from home, as of 1 month ago. So don’t be afraid of corrections, it’s still nursing. It never set me back in my career. Reach out to me on Insta DMs if you ever have any questions, I got you bro!

    Are you still working in correctional nursing? In my 30s now and I'm interested in going back to school for nursing as a guy. Appreciate the stories, really interesting.

      Not anymore, I transitioned to a working from home nursing job as of about 1 month ago now. I took a job promotion. I now work as a nurse consultant for the state of CA. Nursing is a solid career, you just have to see what it would look like for you to start and what would be required. If you need help or have specific questions reach out to me on Insta, my DMs are easiest to reach me. I enjoy telling the stories! lol

    This was an interesting insightful video. I have now fulfilled all the secondary requirements of my LPN/LVN program. 👌Now i just have to make sure my right AK leg is 100% ready. haha. Man.. I have a martin bionics socket now and I think its 70/30. 4 weeks until class starts. I should have enough time to get it together. Luckily I don't have the financial struggles though.

      Right on brother! I hope the leg gets better soon! I can imagine that’s a challenge, happy to hear you moving through it despite it all. 4 weeks is a good break left, take the time you need for yourself.

      @MaleNurseMentor I luckily rested it for about 6-8 weeks after a pressure sore. Now it's time to wear it and make sure it's solid. I have been able to work on my feet full time before, so it should be doable again. 👌
