28 yrs is a long time! I imagine you've seen it all change right in front of you. I've only experienced a fraction and I saw this too. I saw a glimpse of this while in school which is why I never wanted to work bedside, then post pandemic, it only got worse. Certain pockets of nursing may be better, but bedside nursing was surely a rough place to work from my personal experience.
I appreciate your insight! I am 28 and will be starting an ADN program in August. Also, my brother is 29 and has been a nurse for 3 years. He is working at a state prison like you too…making bankkk. Good luck!
@@MaleNurseMentor I start in August. I personally don’t want to do psych. I’m thinking something in pediatrics or OR. Kaiser is also very appealing because of their great pay, benefits and pension.
I wish you the best! Glad to hear you have a date to start. Enjoy your time until then. Nursing school will help you solidify where you 'd like to work or not work. Kaiser is a solid place from what I hear. It's a huge system too.
Hey! You hit 1K let’s goo! I applied to a pre-nursing program at a university, nervous as hell man, fingers crossed everything works out. Just hope when all is said and done im able to handle the pressure/reality of being a skilled, kind, and empathetic nurse
Thanks man! I’m happy about the 1K also lol. And right on!! That’s great, I know the waiting portion is also hard. Are you applying to multiple universities? And it’s normal to feel nervous and scared, I felt that way myself for sure. I’m rooting for you. Keep me updated if you remember.
Thank you for sharing your insights in which regards to your experience as a new nurse! As a brand new male RN I've found that it is tough at first but it does gets better as you go on. 6 months in a county hospital doing bedside and I can say the amount of experience that I'm getting is a blessing itself. though I must admit some shifts are back breaking lol
I can fully understand everything you said here. It is tough at first no matter what, but it will get better. Also nursing is so broad, you don’t like an area, we can move to another specialty. I appreciate you, thank you.
That’s awesome brother!! Way to get in! You’re at a great age and to know what you want so early. You’ll be exactly where you want to be in a few years with your RN license. Take it easy on yourself and just know nursing is broad, you’ll find a place for you. Reach out anytime for encouragement or questions, I got you!! Treat it like a journey is my best tip.
If you’ve done arts as a major, my best advise would be you’d almost have to approach it like a new degree. You’d have to look at nursing programs and see what classes they require. Arts and nursing are quite different, you’ll have to take many new classes I’d imagine.
I have been a bedside RN for 28 years. It is getting harder. Patients and families are more entitled and management expects more with less resources.

That’s awesome bro! When do you start? And how funny, I wonder how he likes it. Prison RN is definitely different from a hospital lol.

Advice for an international student from Africa who wants to study nursing. At 20years who has done arts as a major
If you’ve done arts as a major, my best advise would be you’d almost have to approach it like a new degree. You’d have to look at nursing programs and see what classes they require. Arts and nursing are quite different, you’ll have to take many new classes I’d imagine.
If you’re in school still, all you need to do is switch majors, and take the classes you need for a nursing program.
