I want to offer a little bit of push-back although I agree with the spirit of what you're saying here. (For context, I'm in nursing school presently, and have been in healthcare for about 4 years total.) I think it's important to remember that you "can't pour from an empty cup" no matter *what* the job, obstacle, or situation is. I think that nurses who "sacrifice" themselves for anyone who isn't their direct child or family, are acting foolishly. If you aren't taking care of yourself, you can't take care of others, and you need to be an adult and create some space away from work. It doesn't matter the job. No-one likes a martyr. THAT being said, I don't think nursing is "just a job" in the traditional sense. You can't deny that it is emotionally charged, highly demanding, with literal life or death consequences. Most jobs are not that way, and there are other ways of making six figures a year without going through what we go through. I suggest there's a middle way: it IS a job, but its isn't "just" a job. It IS a calling to serve, but if it's negatively impacting your health, it's a nightmare instead of a dream. Maybe the whole concept of boundary control is a little harder in this line of work. "Do your 8 and hit the gate," I like that...

I appreciate the push back as it is not a black and white concept, but I'm happy to know you were able to see the spirit of the video. There are certainly positions in nursing that are much higher stakes (ER, ICU, even the emergency response nurse at the prison I work at) that just require and ask for more of us emotionally and physically, but there are also so many other positions which a nurse can find themselves in and it won't be so life or death feeling. Much more laid back actually, that a "just a job" mentality can align with better. --But I love what you touched on, which goes even higher than a career as a nurse, but the workforce in our lifetime. Which is setting work-life boundaries, which are critical for a healthy present day and future outcome. I appreciate you bringing that up! You make great points and I want to really acknowledge those.

This is just what I need. I feel so lost. I’m unemployed because of the pressure of the job, not because I can’t get employment. But there videos are a huge help thanks

I appreciate it, happy to hear the videos are helpful. It’s why I make them.
Find a path and stick to it. Be kind to yourself, if you feel lost.

Yeah as a male nurse I see it just as a job not a calling. I've def learned to love nursing and it's done a lot for me, but at the end of the day the way I see it is I get paid to be a professional and do a job, and it doesn't have to be a calling for me to do a good job.

You and I see it the same. I get paid to be a professional, that won’t change whether I’m a nurse or a barista. Except for me I enjoy the lifestyle being a nurse provides.
