wow this couldnt have resonated more, I think I had an early print of the 3 volume patterns bookset, as am digging into the first viewing on the interview, but the odd groupings - so much to learn so little time , thanks for getting to this series Mr Vinnie , and for this interview, those books had hand written typsetting from what I recall, probably since the odd grouping phrases would cross the beat or bar...this system battled for practice session time with another system that got me hooked the gary chester new breed ostinatos 1 and 2 ps ex pete magadini student here...Vinnie thanks for giving lots of musical examples to look up much appreciated

Zeitgeist indeed! As throughout all history artistic expression reflects the state of humanity and it's safe to say that the current one is a low historic point. Social media is the main culprit in my opinion, they've elevated the dumb and neutered all that's meaningful.

Maybe you could show some of your cool shit like when you do that triplet 16th note thing over that double kick shuffle. It’s like a triplet 16th over the shuffle beat took me quite a while to get good on that. I think you should show us some of that stuff I’ll bet you get a bunch of hits.

Musos do active listening, while Joe Q generally does passive listening. (The listening you do when you're not really listening). Musos delight in hearing more and more on subsequent listens, Joe Q is unlikely to listen twice. Write your music to please yourself. Nobody else is listening.

He makes me think more like a musician I don’t need to see the flash and all the bullshit. We’ve all seen that but in conjunction with your excellent narrative still love to see a place something

Greatful for your candid missives. As a drummer I have emence respect. As a young man recording at Ocean Way I met you briefly in the parkinglot at SIR back in '87. You had be rehearsing with Joni? You were very kind and helped me load my stuff into the rental car. Proud of all you have accomplished and share your sentiments about the current state of the industry, or what is left of it. Shine dude...you are still one of the greatest of all time. No-one can take that away from you.

Spot on - thanks :D I was a child in the 1960s, a teenager in the 1970s - and I wouldn't trade with the youth of today. The musical variety that was all the way back to jazz's infancy and up through the 30s, 40s, 50s, and on to the decades when I was a child - is not found in the mainstream today. To hear Bill Evans today, you have to search for special channels, and I think it should be a human right to be presented with such sublime music. Listeners must be educated, but also be open themselves - and a colossal music universe can open up. But nowadays it happens all too rarely.

The formula is based on nursery rhymes. It’s all nursery rhymes always has been always will be. But seriously, isn’t it just a good hook I think they fucked it all away when they quit on the blues. I don’t know it’s my guess. and then… the shit show of music they have out there now may self correct with the advent of interfaces and everybody being a producer on their own maybe the hook and the nursery rhyme will come back. I hope so.! i’ll be sure to check out those mics. I’m just building my studio still working on it. Need some good overheads You’re well spoken, Vinny. Hope this damn channel takes off !

To make metronome practice more challenging (and fun), first create a sequence with quantized quarter note cowbell. Now silence every 4th bar, or silence bars 3 and 4 in your sequence. I called it the Holey Metronome. Free mp3s on my site if you're interested.

Thanks for the deep dive! As I improve as a player, these groove and time subtleties become more and more apparent as I become immersed in the music I'm playing. However, I haven't really had the vocabulary to verbally explain these nuances to other musicians. I recently played a Music of New Orleans concert where all the rhythms were "in the crack" in terms of both tempos, feel and articulation. I heard the rhythmic "shadings", but it was a challenge for my bandmates. In the end, I had to just pull them into my groove and it ended up being well received by the audience.

Great! But 1&3 "Dreaded"!? Nice to keep them, but it does create dull stomping. Talk about it more if you bring it up again.Leading accurately to the 1, that is the key, yes? That's what good drummers and conductors really supply. Thinking ahead, music's great gift. Cold medicine made me speed the beat up. Great perspective, ideas and communication. Yay Vinnie! Keep on!

Gary's books on linear drumming and metric modulation really opened up my feel and soloistic creativity and phrasing. I have almost no interest in what I hear as linear shredding or gospel chops etc. After 30 sec. I'm out. It's just a bunch of noise with no proper context. Very little musical interesting happening.

Lovely and inspiring. I've been fascinated by and have loved Chick's music for years, which I always felt was telling me things that I couldn't quite grasp. I thought it must be something incredibly deep and profound so I kept trying to analyze it more, which was great fun, but I still felt something was missing. Only recently I realized it was the taste of an ice cream cone on hot summer day after playing baseball in the street, the smell of play-doh, the paint-by-numbers landscape with the piebald horse that was finally finished. It was the sound of life, of the joy of being alive and finding others around you who felt the same, where you created your own world where the rules were your own, and others could be invited in, but only if they understood the secret, only if they could pass through that mirror to the other side like Alice in Wonderland. Some might not get it, they might see the pretty pictures and laugh and smile, but a few would throw down their heavy burdens and jump and splash in the puddles for a time.

Vinnie, you once said that you stopped doing clinics bcz of the “ razzle/dazzle “ most people are expecting from you… ( displaying chops ) showmanship etc. If there is one drummer in the world that should be doing clinics more than anyone else, it should be you. With the resume you have covering almost any style of music, I guess thousands of drummers out there would be HUNGRY to see/hear you talking about your versatility and why you’re one of the most in demand sessionist ever. I hope my text would inspire you to share your knowledge on the instrument by doing clinics again.
