Early in elementary school they called my parents concerned I was favoring my left hand writing. My parents said if he want to write with his left, he’s going to write with his left. The school wanted to force me to write with my right. That’s where my Groove began. Later as I honed in on Drums, I play Right but drumming is a Gift of God
Air to taught me about painting. He said I can play music with shoes....I then thought ....I can paint with a broom. Opened up my art😍. I know you know.
It’s funny that I can’t listen to the same recording of myself twice and the first time I’ll hate it, but the second time, in a different state of mind I’ll love it. Why is that?
Hello Mr. Colaiuta i hope i get to meet you someday so we can talk drums! I'm 30 and been into drums for 15 year. I wish to be heard someday and getting a single lessson with you would make me die happy and fulfilled (mainly the interaction with someone like-minded and someone who i admire, is what i'm looking for) i would pick your brain so hard with anything gary chaffee related!!. Thank you for following your dream.
The "let go / let me emerge / got out of the way" concepts are seriously deep (allowing your unique voice to incubate / emerge). During my normal day to day busy-work, I'm not thinking like this. Thanks Vinnie.
hi vinnie, this is so inspiring, thanks alot.i'm a musician from hamburg( germany),and i'm a singer, drummer and percussionist.i started playing drums at the age of three, with my dad.he played the same instruments, and i learned just by watching, listening and feeling him ,everytime he performed.we listened to a lot of different kinds of music.that was my personal study.i'll be 66 this year, and finally beginnibg to find out who i really am.it's a journey....peace robbie
Awesome Vinnie! Thank you! Getting out of your own way! Kenny Werner’s books “Becoming the Instrument“ and “Effortless Mastery” have helped me let go and “let me happen!” 🙏🏽
Excellent Vinnie...its no coincidence that a number from the comments list are from 60yrs+ listeners - pls count me into that illustrious group! When I was in my late 20ys, I once asked Nana Vasconcelos how he packed so much swing (air) around a certain rhythmic phrase. Nana responded: "Its just the way I hear it when I sing it and I'm breathing it out... its just a part of what's going on inside (laughing)". Ok cool 😎 I get it (well, if only partially)......but now that I'm in my late 60yrs, it continues to take on ever more meaning!!
I found more quality time on my instrument and my pad recently the silly little RUclips video of subdivisions with a click running oh my God it opened me up. My left hand was Untrained I didn’t know it for 40 years. My time and feel are Definitely improving Even the simplest beat played super well in the pocket. There’s nothing like it Vin!
Just playing alternate single strokes at 60 BPM and make it groove was one of the toughest things I ever did but when it’s there, the sense of time opens up it’s pretty uncanny
Hallo Mr. Colaiuta! Wow! Very deep! A lot to think about... and as far as I am concerned, a lot of potential to grow personally. Greetings from Austria, Klemens
"Let me happen" ... says it all...both life wise and drum wise
Thanks for the delicious breakfast, Vinnie. I'm always hungry for more.
The language analogy is spot on.
What's up Maestro! Awesome! You're doing this podcast. You should go live sometime
Yess......Thank you!!!!

I play what I hear, I don’t think about it. Just flows out. You are your instrument. This comes …playing with other players in a room.
And the funky drummer was...
fortunately, decades after the class, Vinnie wrote/spoke the assigned essay

McWorld, perfect description of our society!!
I've been a student of music all my life, and I can't see that stopping any time soon. So yeah, I'm a 70yo student :)
