- The pilot episode of a potential new Homeskoolin' spin-off series....(well, that is of course if anybody actually LIKES it)....
So here's the pitch...
a Homeskooler submits a 3-5 minute video of their guitar playing to be evaluated by Uncle Larry AND the rest of the class....you gotta clearly show both your hands in the video....a solo performance with no accompaniment or backing tracks is preferred, but not mandatory.
Larry will then watch the video and of course make his patented BRUTALLY honest assessments of that person's touch, technique, feel, sound, pocket and all the rest of the elements that go into playing guitar for real.
Todays student for your consideration is Anthony Ziomek
It takes some thick skin to open yourself up to this type of thing in the first place…I appreciate you being willing to participate Anthony...you got balls my friend.
So, if anyone else wants to try their hand at this madness just go ahead and email me at tombukovac@gmail.com and we can discuss details.
It's gonna cost you 500 bucks to get your video sent off to the lab and get your test results back friends. You have to be patient too...that is VERY important.
This 500 bucks is the same fee i charge for actual in person guitar lessons (that sadly i never have time to actually do, but i wish i could)....oh well...someday friends.
I sincerely hope this helps all of you learn a thing or two that can be useful down the road...
and totally unrelated, but still fun...damn i love a nasty blues harp.

another is an instrumental collaboration with his dear friend Dean Deleo (originally from the Stone Temple Pilots organization) that is available here:

There is also an instrumental record Larry made with Guthrie Trapp called "In Stereo" that can be found here...

Hey Larry thanks again man for checking out my playing and giving some pointers! Lots to think about!
right on anthony....thank you for getting involved in the first place, glad you were the star of the first episode
Cheers Tony! Thanks for breaking the ice. Good player
brass balls Tony, great playing man
Great playing man!! I really appreciate you stepping up to the plate here. I think Uncle Larry was spot on with his very nice critiques. That being said dude, you play really great!!
I could swear you are a lute player or something, those hands are something to behold. Good on you for being the first cab off the rank too, I think many of us have learned a few things.
Thanks Uncle Larry for the classroom lesson!! Great lesson and insight. Thanks Anthony for paying for today’s lesson!
This is an excellent new feature of the channel, Tom. A lesson for one of us is a lesson for all of us. Thanks, Tony, for putting yourself out there!
Really enjoyed that, Uncle Larry. Nice tip on vibrato. Appreciate ya for sharing your playing Anthony Z!
No matter what guitar you play, it ALWAYS sounds like you. Thanks Unc, keep them coming brother. 😊
Love this idea, Tom! Any more of em would be much appreciated. Feels real and very Larry.
Opener was greasy! On the edge and innovating in real time. Thanks brother.
It linked rather well to what he was teaching
This was awesome, looking forward to the next one!
Great video uncle Larry. Gives stuff to think about for lots of us.
WTG, Anthony! Always hard to be the first one in the pool. Sending a clip like this to Larry is kind of like a good HS QB sending a clip to Patrick Mahomes. But, getting guidance like this from Larry? Priceless.
Very helpful. Thanks for the contribution dude🎉
Great lesson. Thank you Anthony, great tone.
My takeaway, that I will work on:
Make the listener wait. Don't rush, especially not the slow stuff.
And get that steady, hypnotic groove.
When I play, it's mostly me singing and playing guitar, slow songs. Your advice really apply to me, as well.
Keep rocking Anthony, let's see a follow up in 6-12 months 😊
I vote for more. The very definition of constructive criticism. Thanks to both teacher and student.
Good job Anthony.
Nice going Anthony!! Tighten the wang bar up so it stays put and maybe plam the tip like Jeff Beck for smooth Trem action if the finger thing that Tom showed doesn't work for you. I would like to hear a slow sweeps on the Trem as well. It would go with the slow pace better.
You can put a small ball bearing on top of the trem arm spring and it will stay wherever you leave it
Hey Tom, very cool episode. I can feel the flood gates opening for more of this critical analysis.
Very cool concept with this series. One suggestion, maybe remove the bar entirely for awhile and use the palm on the bridge for some light vibrato in spots.
Good job. Takes courage to go on the line like that.
That foot tap!
Excellent, constructive feedback! I was impressed by Anthony's touch and the looseness of his right wrist on the faster passages. Good dexterity with both hands. Nice tone as well. I thought the gradual fingering of the chords midway through was interesting initially, but as it continued I wondered if he was compensating an inability to grab the chord faster? I totally agreed with Uncle Larry's feedback on the wang bar - it became distracting, and it wasn't always additive. I think Anthony's playing could have stood on its own WITHOUT the wang bar. Don't use the bar as a crutch. Rock on!
Whats the name of that Police tune he was playing?
Sorry one more comment. Looking forward to the Beato interview. What a cool mashup. Like happy days and Mork and Mindy
I think this guy's playing is pretty cool. Hopefully, the tips from Tom help him get to the next level....
He needs to watch Jeff Beck videos. He was a master at how you explained to hold the whammy bar. Great advice Uncle Larry. It was annoying. I like his finger picking technique. He is talented for sure
Time passion and commitment= anything you do❤🦧 stay healthy my friends🎶
I always pictured Anthony Ziomek wearing pants.
Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!! Me too!
2:13 Fortress is profound.
Yeah, the whammy is kinda getting in the way of his playing, which is nice. It's weird,I like his playing a lot, but he does the bar vibrato, it's like a guy who bought the guitar recently.
Maybe a tremolo pedal would cause a better effect.
Thanks for the lesson Unc, I’m about to go practice an hour with the wang bar in my fingers without using it at all… super cool idea btw with this…. Thanks again
Yes, kind of a nervous Quicksilver vibrato. Not my cup_a_tea
So, bottom line. Always stay close to the bar!
if you're gonna actually use it
My hat is off to Anthony for having the balls to post something in front of the public like that. I agree with everything that Tom said. As far as the wang bar stuff, I suggest that Anthony remove it for a couple of weeks or so and just get used to playing without it. He can then start to rely only on his left hand for any vibrato.
Right on; kudos to Anthony for bejng the first to raise his hand. I'd recommend losing the right hand anchor pinkie; It will free up the dexterity of the middle and ring fingers, and allow for the vibrato arm technique Tom is recommending.
Was going to say the sane thing, take the bar off, it will make him have to think differently, sometimes different is good, so when he puts it back on again he doesn't become so relient on it, Less is More approach. We'll don't Anthony for having the balls to put it up.
Yeah good for you man.
100% serious balls. And he was awesome too. For TB to compliment your playing, man that’s awesome.
How do you do the whammy technique TB suggests while fingerpicking, that’s hard.
@@doubled5383 A lot of it depends on your right hand position/shape. In this video, Anthony was anchoring his pinkie, which forces the hand to rotate so the fingers are less perpendicular to the strings. This "Karate Chop" attitude of the hand blocks the trem bar from reaching the palm. Coming from the classical world, I position my hand with the palm facing the strings. This creates a "hollow" in the palm of my hand. I bend the bar (not easy) so that the plastic tip of the bar sits inside this hollow, near the center of my palm, without touching. Some bars are too long for this, and will need to be cut down 1-2". This allows my hand to hover over the bar like a spider, ready to immediately actuate it, when needed. For pieces where I only use the bar in a few places, I use the method Tom demonstrates here, but I find this method essentially negates the use of the ring finger.
Much respect Anthony and great touch! Beautiful strat as well!
Hey Tom, it's so f-ing unreal that we get to live in the time that you were doing your thing. I thought about how damn lucky I am that for whatever reason, I got to walk this blue marble when you were making music. Damn cool thing!
appreciate these kind words my dear boy....music is cool ain't it?
Thanks Tom & Anthony, great episode.
always be in song mode, always be in story mode
amazing advice
Dude , It is SO comforting when you say (Hello friends , It's just Uncle Larry. ) in your soft and engaging voice. Really , It is a subtle , honest Howdy that makes us all feel special. It's real , Like you. That's half of what we all crave as humans. lol. Thanks for EVERYTHING you do and bring to youtube ! Peace , Love and Joy !
Great job guys! We could only dream of having a pro critique our playing back in the day. Very inspiring and extremely cool. Thanks to the FIRST episode from both of you! Thanks Anthony!
Tom, this is a wonderful new addition to the "Skool". And thanks to Anthony for his bravery. Better man than me. Obviously can't speak for others, but your commentary is extremely helpful, and can immediately see things that I should apply even though I play very differently. What you have done on this channel is such a bright spot when sometimes this digital world feels like a wasteland. my most genuine thanks.
like this format man! love the insight
That was interesting. And entertaining.
Yep, great comment.
well hell, if YOU even liked it we might be on to something...
Much like yourself, Sir Stringy!
I think you evaluating my playing would be a riot.
@@stringlocker as a token of appreciation for all the entertainment you have brought me through your hilarious comments on this channel, i will do a full evaluation of your playing for the cost of one dollar USD.
just have one of those young millennial kids next door whose parents would never allow to talk to you when they were little show you how film and to email me a 3 minute video
Thanks for putting yourself out there, Anthony and thanks, Tom for doing this. I know I learned something today, Hopefully this segment catches on.
Nice playing Anthony! That's a solid critique Tom, honest, constructive evaluation, fair and not hurtful. I look forward to this aspect of the Homeskoolin' channel. Also, I really dug the one song I caught with your sitting in with Jedd the other night--Guthrie's as well.
Would love to be featured in this series it has immense potential to do good for younger players as well as old. Im 28 gotta residency been holding for 3 years at a nice club but I wanna break through maybe I can be a catalyst for others in the intermediate beginner stage! Thanks Uncle Tio would love to be apart of this!
Kidding of course but I've been checking your videos out and I thi k you are fantastic at explaining things and think you'd be able to give me a few pointers or suggestions...
I remember the video about proper use of a whammy bar. I have just given up on the whammy bar. Anytime i use it it sounds like crap.
Watching dude's playing without a pick was HUGELY helpful for me. The strumming part, particularly. I really appreciate this. Thank you!
Also how you broke town his trem technique was super helpful.
Tom you've made me realize I need help LOL if I send you something would you rip my stuff to shreds as well
I get the radio at my place from time to time also.. drives me nuts.
Big thank you to A. Zio for the submission. I think this series will be beneficial for all of us.
I put that wang lesson straight into practice. I never used it much because I didn't like the way my vibrato sounded. Your suggestions helped a ton.
Here's another vote for more of these. Thanks Unc...and thanks to Anthony and his battleship-sized balls.
Excellent Larry great feedback
Anthony, hat's off for having the courage to be first to give this a try, nice playing. Hey Tom, very nice, kind job on the coaching, very useful info for us all.
Looking forward to the Vinyl premier. My new turntable awaits. I dig the Trip the Witch record too.
Thanks for the reminder about getting your whole body into it. I love that
Great video Tom, how old is that SIT strap?
Is there video with Bigsby arm tips?
Thanks Anthony and Tom. Nice style.
Good format and commentary.
I think I would have had a stroke as I were about to hit the upload button. Major kudos for putting yourself out there. Nice playing.
1:35 “In the cool, cool, cool of the morning… THATS when I’m coming home…”
Tell ebo to start a youtube channel
I enjoyed listening to this but not watching. The compulsion to go for the vibrato with only a fraction of a second and sometimes going for it and not even making it before the next lick.. awkward and frankly made me a bit anxious.
with that being said, thanks for putting yourself out there... much respect!
Kudos to Anthony. It takes some balls to put yourself out there. I love this idea and hearing your feedback.
Man this was such a great start to this idea you had!! Thanks so much Uncle Larry!!
Yes Tom. One of my favourite quotes. "There's nothing more boring than talking about yourself"
Fascinating class. Thanks Anthony and Larry
Hi Tom. In the spirit of these evaluation videos and your recent one on intermediate players/new session players, I think a cool episode would be to interview the guys from Cliffs on their experience in studio for debut album. Since new to them, would be interesting to hear what they learned, what surprised them, what they thought when going in vs after the experience. That discussion could be helpful and benefit other Home Skoolers that also might just be starting out in sessions. Anyway, just a thought that came to mind for an interesting episode. Thanks for all you do! Love your videos
The old bull... make them wait.
Abby Whiteside was a piano teacher who advocated against a finger centric approach and favored an approach of instilling rhythm in the body. She died back in the 50s but her advice is as relevant as ever.
This is some MASTER teaching stuff here. I love how you cut back to you showing your point about the vibrato arm. Genius. Are you calling it a "wang bar" ? LOL
Kudos to Anthony for fronting up the readies and the balls for this episode. Really enjoy this format. Goes to show what a cool collection of guitar nerds we have round these parts!
heavens me, this is so incredibly helpful. I watched his demo trying to pinpoint what I thought Larry would be going to say about it. This is a huge learning experience for those who watch it, too. Also: incredibly fair. Most youtubers would probably dwell on about something they don't like (such as the whammy bar usage) but Bukovac made his point, explained how you can do better, and moved on so that I as a listener, too was like "ok point taken, let's move on"
Incredibly fair play and therefore such a great lesson
I’ve learned so much from this vid! This dude should be proud of himself and has balls! I thank both of you guys! Sincerely!
Hell of a great job with the assessment and hell of a great job by Anthony Z.
Uncle Larry - this opportunity is such a fantastic idea and great way to get an assessment of someone of your caliber. Thanks again…I’m inspired!
Good on Tony for having the confidence to post this. Solid feedback and constructive criticism from Uncle Larry.
Really like this new content Tom. Very interesting. Nice playing Anthony and good luck to you in your musical endeavors.
Good one! Waiting to see next
Way to go Anthony! It’s always hard to go first. Sounds great, love the playing.
I noticed you’re posting longer videos. Ain’t good internet downloading speeds great?
Listen to lots of the kind of music you want to play. And lots of other music too. Big balls, Anthony.
Please do this more. So helpful and my hats off to the dude who sent this video to Larry. Takes balls
Hats off to Anthony ! Great job my man.
Loved this. Such a great idea for a series.
Hell yeah!! Love hearing you play some “Fortress Around Your Heart”! Can’t wait to see the whole Rick Beato interview with you and Guthrie.
Well done, Tony. You make it look so easy. Beautiful tone, and nice touch.
I keep finding myself saying “oohh noo.. he’s gonna do the whammy wiggle..!!!”
But he’s does have a good touch..
NASCAR is visiting Nashville this weekend and during the pre race show somebody mentioned that there are 180 live music venues in the Downtown area. !80, if you managed to make it to five or six a night you would still have to stay a month to see everything. That is incredible. The race winner's trophy is a guitar, awesome.........
That Sting album was one of my favorites in high school, but I didn't talk about it. It was a little VH1-ish for the kids to be hangin their rep on.
Thanks Anthony, for putting up your video. You sound great and we all benefit from your courage. Thanks Uncle Larry for the lesson!
UL, I love your comment about listening. Listening is vital to being a good friend, spouse, family member, child, etc.
Anthony's video was great! I bet he is awesome on an acoustic! Good job sir.
Tom, you never cease to amaze!!
I learned a lot from this! Thanks to Anthony for putting himself and his $ out there. Nice playing too!
Love the concept and construction, here.
I love how our player took that step off the ledge. He didn’t let fear hold him back from learning.
I love the constructive feedback that we ALL benefit from, and thanks to Uncle Larry for taking time to make this video and put it out here for us.
This video also reminds me why, after almost 2 decades, I’ve returned to playing the Strat.
One question Tom, do you know Bad Brad?
He is leaving Nashville!
Hey Tom, I have been struggling to find the fender 58 tele tone in other brands. My problem is that I can't afford to buy a fender custom and that's the only place I can get those 58 pick ups, I can't buy them separately. Do you know of a brand/boutique label that sells the 58 fender tele tone?
Thanks for this, Tom. It's really helpful. Feeling motivated to send one in.
Can't even imagine Uncle Larry watching my hackery, even on acoustic with Open D capo Good for you
This takes Balls! But as I've always suspected, leave the wang bar in the case and bring tears to my eyes with your emotion.
Not to bad...not as brutal as I thought it would be...Thanks Tom, and Thanks Anthony. His playing was nice, made me want to listen to Fleetwood Mac
The cops are here, man....or was that just Gordon?
"Fortress around your heart" - just Sting (and probably Dominic Miller) One of my all time faves.
Nice playing Anthony! I concur about the "talent stick" technique, to me a slower trem would have suited the composition better imo. Really enjoyed this video and hope it becomes a regular thing!
