Trying to farm on a small scale with antique equipment. I'm mainly an Allis Chalmers fan but when you're working with what is available you can't always be picky. I do some machining and fabricating too, and just some general wrench turning as well. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!
Kohler KT17 Gets an Old School Valve Job
Still working on the KT17 for my 917H Deutz Allis garden tractor. Today we start doing a valve job with the toolpost grinder on the Atlas lathe and my Dad's Sioux valve seat grinder. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Kohler KT17 Series 2 No Governor Part 1

I started this video back before the boiler pipe project became a thing, so a bit of time has elapsed since the beginning. The governor in this engine hasn't been acting right, and it finally got to where it was either idling or revving to the moon. Let's see if it's fixable. Thanks for watching!!!

Adjusting the Governor on the Mighty WD45
Просмотров 115Месяц назад
I'm not sure exactly why, but since I got the engine running in the WD45 again, the throttle hasn't been responding correctly and the engine has been revving way too high at wide open throttle. I did manage to fix it, but not the way that I thought it would get fixed. The only thing that I know is different from before tearing the engine down is that the oil passage in the governor cover was to...

Allis Chalmers WD45 PTO Housing and Machining a New Idler Gear Shaft
Просмотров 862 месяца назад
What started as a simple gasket replacement ended up needing a few new bearings and machining a new shaft for the idler gear. The gears show quite a bit of wear, but I don't want to replace any without doing them all and the drive gear in the transmission can't be removed without splitting the tractor. I'm not ready to do that, but since I plan on using the Oliver for most of my PTO work anyway...

They are small, and have fairly light running gears, but I think they ...

Let's Go Plowing! The Oliver 770's (almost) Triumphant Return to the Field
Man yeah, that is an amazing example of how to do that!! I had an older gentleman do a serious SBC heads back in the day, I thought there is no way this will work...used them for many years with zero issues!! I love watching how y'all set things up in the lathe and make it work!! Just amazing to me!! Great job Evan, looking fwd to seeing this unit back in action!! Inl hope you have a great week my friend!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks Nelson! It's not the most elegant but it works. Those older guys could work miracles with engines. Thanks for watching, Nelson! Hope you have a good one!
Very interesting , thanks for taking the time to show that.
Thanks Rusty! Hopefully next winter I can do this to the Oliver engine. Hope you have a good week!
Great tutorial Evan. l
Thanks, Mike!
Ground smooth and true, by machine or by hand...all the same. Should be just fine! Thank you Evan.
It's all worth it when they run and work again. Thanks for watching, Ed!
Good evening Evan
Sorry Ed, I loaded this one as I was going to bed again.
e
Evan i have tons and tons of meteral
Thanks Dan! I was going to call you if I didn't find anything close enough. Stay warm!
You always amaze me Evan, the shear knowledge of all that machining!! I am going to ask the dumbest question ever... how does turning square or rectangle work? I just can't get it through my head 🤔🤦🏼🤦🏼🤣🤣🤣 Leave it to me to ask the silly questions, I mean, I saw it here... but just isn't making sense. Best to leave the machining to you guys that know your stuff!! Did you give the lathe a spin there when you started it? The repair looks amazing, could watch this all day!! Man I wish you were closer 😁😁 Thank you sir for bringing us along!! 👌🏻👌🏻😁😁🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks, Nelson! It's not a dumb question. I guess the best way I can explain it is that the metal doesn't really care what shape it is, so making a round piece out of a square is just cutting the corners down until what is left is round. I do have to spin the lathe to start it. The motor is going bad and it won't start itself anymore, it just hums unless you give it a spin before you turn the switch on. It's been that way for years, I just keep using it that way. I need to fix it one of these days. Thanks always for the kind words and the encouragement, Nelson! I hope you have a good week, friend!
@evanaustin2636 Thank you for thr explanation!!! I understand on the lathe, it's tired like us 😁😁
Very nice! you do a fantastic job fixing things.
Thanks, Mike! As long as it will hold together, then I'm happy! Hope you have a good week!
Kinda the hard way, but use what you have 👍😎 Have a good one Evan!
Thanks, Ed! Not ideal, but it works well enough. Hope you have a good one as well!
Another fine repair! I usually have to go somewhere and look in someone else's junk stock lol.
Thanks, Rusty! I stocked up on steel a few years ago, the scrap yard that I bought steel from was going out of business so I went and bought about 600 lbs of random sized scrap pieces, LOL. Still don't always have what I need though🙄🙄
If you decide to sell it let me know
Let's make sure it actually runs again...
Interesting repair Evan. Think I've got 4 of those engines around here in various Cub Cadets. I do not have the Bridgeport however.
Thanks, Mike. I think the root of this problem was overheating. I had cooling fins get plugged up a couple years ago and it got pretty hot, it's acted weird ever since. It started this season running ok enough but it got to where I can't control it anymore. Overall it's been a good engine. I'm a Briggs guy but I was very impressed with this one. I wondered if any of your Cubs had this engine. Hope you have a good one, Mike!
@@evanaustin2636 They made those engines in three series. First ones had oiling issues. The series two were pretty good, that's what all of mine are. The third series added a filter, better yet. Those DA mowers seem like pretty good machines. I'd have a hard time sending a good one down the road.
@@MikeJensen-wo7oh My dad worked in a mower shop when the first series KT17's were out. He said they had a pile of them, all with broken connecting rods. You're right, the series 2's are pretty good engines. I don't really want to sell it, but the boss doesn't want a bunch of mowers around for some reason. If I hide it in the shed well enough maybe she won't know it's still here...
Man yeah Evan, you sure are sharp as a tack at these repairs!!! Thats a sweet mower, reminds me of one a friend's dad had years ago. Don't remember the brand but look exactly like this one but yellow!! I know the feeling on the record button 🫣 Looking fwd to seeing the valve work with Dad's seat grinder if you captured it!! I love all the cool tools you have to use!!! Thank you my friend for bringing us along!! I must have missed thr first one🤔 Have a great week my friend!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thanks, Nelson! I don't know about sharp, even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes! I love those garden tractors, this is identical to a Simplicity 7117. Hopefully I can get to doing the valves this weekend. I guess the good news is that there are 2 cylinders so I have 2 chances to press the record button 🙄🙄 I don't think you missed any, this is the first video of this particular disaster. Thanks for watching and all the support, Nelson! Hope you have a great week as well!
Interesting. I've never seen the inside of one of those. I was wondering how far you were having to go to get to the governor gear.
I've only done it one other time, probably 20 years ago. I had trouble getting the crankcase halves separated this time because I missed a bolt. There aren't any gaskets between the halves, either, you use anaerobic gasket sealer on them. I'm hoping this takes care of the problem, the engine is a little tired but it's always ran really well. Thank you for watching, Rusty! I hope you have a good one!
I hate when you push the button and it doesn't record!! Looks like it should fix it! Thank you Evan! Have a good one!
I could have sworn that I pushed it, either I didn't hit it right or I just had a brain fart and forgot. Oh well. Not the first time I've screwed up, and it won't be the last time either! Hope you have a good one, Ed!
Evening Evan
Howdy, Ed. Actually working on your video right now
@evanaustin2636 perfect 👍
Man yeah Evan, good to see you got the burner back going!! I bet that is a satisfying feeling!! Hopefully that pipe will last for many years!! Y'all have snow yet? Thank you for bringing us along!! Look fwd to seeing whats next!! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🪵🪵🪵🪵
Thanks Nelson! I'm not sure that it's satisfying, so much, as it is a huge relief that the pipe was actually the problem. I've been worried all this time that I missed something and that it would still leak, but thank goodness it's fixed! We did get maybe 2 or 3 inches of snow today. It's supposed to be in the 40's tomorrow and 50's by Sunday so it won't last long. Our winters aren't too harsh compared to what they get farther North. Thanks for watching, Nelson! I hope you have a good one!
@evanaustin2636 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻❄️❄️
Good to see you got it working Evan. And just in time!
Thanks Mike! Just in time is right!
Good to see it working!! Have a good one Evan!!
Thanks Ed! It feels good to have that finished! Hope you have a good one!
Bet that's a good feeling! Man,, that is a nice sized firebox! It's been snowing here some.
Evening Rusty. Did you get any of the wind today?? It sure did a lot of damage along the coast and West side of Washington.
Yes it is! I've been worried since I started working on it that I was fixing the wrong thing. So I'm VERY relieved that it's fixed! I woke up to a dusting of snow outside this morning. The ground is still pretty warm here so it won't last long. Hope you have a good one, Rusty!
@@GosselinFarmsEdGosselin Hi Ed, not much here, it was just breezy, i heard there was lots of damage, 80 mph winds, sheesh!
Man, that stinks. I'm sorry your having to deal with that. I've never used that type of system, I was thinking maybe hooking up a smoke machine, but with the pipe full of insulation, I don't think it would have worked. God bless you and I hope it goes better for you
Smoke may have worked on the old pipe, it isn't filled solid like the new one is. It just has a couple layers of bubble wrap around the pex pipes. The house was empty for 2 winters before we bought it, and the whole boiler system froze. It didn't hurt the boiler itself but I had to replace a bunch of parts to get it going and I've been waiting for the lines to go the whole time we've been using it. Hopefully the new ones will outlast my desire to cut wood, LOL. Thank you for watching, Steve! I hope you have a great week!
Wow, that didn't look fun at all!! Photo bombed by the cat 🤣🤣🤣 That is like Jack for sure!! Nothing wrong with having friends with cool toys😉😉 I bet that was a ride when it caught the roots. We have a vermeer at work, doesn't get used much but we always put the new guys on it when we do 🤣🤣🤣😉😉 The look on their face is epic when a good root or rock gets caught 😂😂😂🤣🤣 Hopefully you won't have anymore issues, at least if there is a positive.. it wasn't hard winter and snow yet 😳😳 Hopefully the connections go well, and that is pretty slick the test port you built😉 Thank you Evan for bringing us along, hope you have a great week 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks, Nelson! Yeah, I didn't really know what I was doing and then hitting that stupid root right off the bat was not a great start, LOL! Those darn cats...you need some cats? I'll ship you some...Jack needs some friends 🤣🤣 The weather has been really mild so far, I can't complain at all about that. And we did get some rain last week so that softened things up for digging 👍👍I'm hoping to get it finished up this weekend. Thanks again, Nelson! I hope you have a great week too!
@evanaustin2636 😁😁😁😉👌🏻👌🏻
Wow, that's quite a job! I used to have a water line from the house to my barn. That is until the gophers chewed a hole in it. Being PVC, i had no way of finding the leak, and being 4 feet down, i ended up loosing my water to the barn. A project i still haven't done for 12 years now.
That stinks. Not much you can do with that, "easier" to just run a new line. But definitely not easy. I'm glad this didn't have to be that deep. Hopefully I can get it finished up next weekend. Hope you have a good week, Rusty!
Well that doesn't look like much fun. Kids looked like they were having a good time though, cats too. I moved a bunch of stuff around Sunday, maybe shoot part four of the equipment tour soon.
It wasn't a great time. The boys sure loved the dirt though. Especially on Sunday after it rained Saturday night. They are very drawn to mud. Will be looking forward to part 4! Thanks for watching, Mike! Hope you have a good one
Never breaks at the “right” time 😉😉😂. I feel your pain. I have a sewer line that needs redone…
Ain't that the truth! Ugh, I think yours sounds worse than mine. Hope it isn't too horrible to get done
Fun job... Lol. At least you got it done before the ground froze and the snow flies!! It's a little more money, but for something like that, I'd sure consider putting a plastic pipe in the ground, big enough to pull the hose through.. just in case there's a next time... Always good to have friends with equipment!!! Have a good one Evan!!
Thanks, Ed. Yeah, the conditions could have been a lot worse. And we had a good rain last week so that made the digging a lot easier. I'm not sure if you buried a bigger pipe if you would be able to pull this stuff through it. It doesn't flex very well. That's why I ended up hacking out the sheet metal on the back of the boiler, it wouldn't flex enough to line up and go through the hole underneath. Hopefully this will outlast my desire to cut wood... Thanks for watching, Ed! Hope you have a good one
@evanaustin2636 big electric cable is pretty stiff too.. lol When you get tired of cutting wood, is when you convert it to a diesel/oil boiler.. still need the hose.. Just a thought 🤔
Can't hardly get by without a good loader , glad the Allis is running well!! 😁That handle on the splitter is epic, I love that!! Oh no on the boiler, Im hoping it's an easy fix!! Thank you Evan for bringing us along!! Hope the week is going well my friend!! 😁😁🇺🇲👌🏻👌🏻🪵🪵
Thanks, Nelson! I wish I could claim that handle, but it was on the splitter when I bought it. I sure do like it though! The boiler itself is ok, but the problem isn't going to be a fun fix. I hope you have a good week as well, Nelson!
I need one of them! Lol
They sure are handy. They are a lot nicer than splitting with wedges and a sledgehammer! Hope you have a good one, Brendan!
@evanaustin2636 certainly Evan. Have seen some pto driven type splitters that could work behind my fergy. Something to think about. For now, it's just my axe and wedges. Lol
@@LinksviewAcres137 It is good exercise
Evan, what kind of wood is that? looks lke it might be boxelder? I've got a lot of firewood around here and nowhere to burn it. I put a link in another comment to a plow day video Mike Kalsem shot at the Collins Iowa event. Has pretty good footage of the 45 and the 856. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Mike! The wood I was splitting is cottonwood. It isn't great firewood, but it was available. I've got a couple trailer loads of ash in the shed already. The boiler goes through a lot of wood so I try not to be too picky. I'll have to check out that other video. Thanks again, Mike! I hope you have a good one!
Those things are so nice! I got to borrow one for some 6' cottonwood rounds, man, what a life saver! Yup, i'm down in the 20's at night, and there's snow on the surrounding hills. Glad you were able to get the WD back on the job!
Thanks, Rusty! The loader and the splitter make the job a lot less bad, LOL. I'm glad I don't have anything to split as big as the ones you have though. I bought a big splitter a few years ago, it's a project, that I haven't gotten to yet. It really feels good to have the Allis back to work, I missed that sound! I hope you have a good one, Rusty!
Loser definitely helps! Pretty good pile you got done 👍 Better get the boiler fixed, winter is coming!! Have a good one Evan!!
Thanks, Ed! The boiler has a water leak in the pipe underground, I got new pipe yesterday (that hurt the checking account) I'm hoping to get it run this weekend. It's been fairly warm here still, usually we light the fire around Halloween. Hope you have a good one as well, Ed!

I think it will be a neat channel. Thanks, Nelson!
I am currently working on a 1962 Oliver 770 and ran across your channel. Congratulations and I will be following along.
Thank you, friend! The more I use the 770, the more I like it. It still needs quite a bit of work, but it's still a lot of fun to run. Thanks for watching!
Swapping batteries 😉. I am with you Evan 😂👌
One of these days I'll break down and buy another battery...but that day isn't today LOL. Hope you have a good one, Jack!
Dr Allis has explained that several times over the years, amazing how it works! What I don't understand is how does the length get off like that? I did both my 45's just like you did here. They weren't off quite as much as yours though.
Thanks, Mike! I'm pretty sure Dr. Allis wrote the post that I found. He knows these things inside and out! That's what confused me too, it always acted fine before, but after I put the engine back in it would not throttle right. I guess it's like a tootsie roll pop, "the world may never know" LOL. Hope you have a good one, Mike!
Always nice when it's an easy fix!! Have a good one Evan!!
Thanks, Ed! I'm glad it didn't have to come back apart again. I don't know why that fixed it, but I guess I won't question it too much LOL. Hope you have a good one, Ed!
Huh, well shoot, now i'm gonna have to go look at my Ford. Thanks!
I don't know how much of this will translate to other brands, but it sure worked on the Allis. I really didn't expect shortening the rod to cure the throttle issue, but I'm not going to complain that it did. Thanks for always, watching, friend! I hope the rain did your hay some good! We have rain predicted for Thursday, I'm hoping that will get my wheat going. Hope you have a good one, Rusty!
Man yeah, cant beat that simple fix Evan!! I love the ole school shorting of the rod😉 Musical batteries 🤣🤣🤣 Boy dont I know that feeling!! Glad it worked out, strange but like you said...its working 😁 Looking fwd to seeing what "next project " is😉😉🤔🤔 Thank you Evan for bringing us along! 😁😁👌🏻👌🏻🇺🇲🇺🇲👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks, Nelson! The thing is, I still don't understand why that fixed it, because it always acted right before. I'm glad it didn't have to come back apart though. The "next project" is one I've been putting off for a while...Thanks for watching, Nelson! I hope you have a great week!
@evanaustin2636 😉😁😁👌🏻👌🏻
I see your scour kleen bottom has a repair that mine might need... how did you attach that sheet metal? I can't tell if those are rivets or screws.
They are machine screws with nuts. I actually had to make a whole new trough for the bottom of the scour kleen because it's not the right one for this combine and the original trash auger and trough were too short. This combine didn't come with a scour kleen on it. I just used thin galvanized duct work sheet metal to make the new one. Good luck with yours!
Always a few piles, doesn’t stop me 😉🙂
Thanks, Jack!
Good to see the mighty 45 back at work! If my plan comes together, I may get some video of one of mine sub-soiling the garden before long. Then if I can just figure out how to get the video on the computer, edit it, and get it posted here...... At least with harvest in the rear-view there's time for such foolishness, hope.
Thanks, Mike! That would be really awesome to see! I hope everything works out! I really would like to find a snap coupler subsoiler. The guy I bought the tractor from had one, but at the time I didn't think I would ever be trying to farm with it so I didn't buy it. Still kicking myself for that. Thanks for watching, Mike! I hope you have a good one!
@@evanaustin2636 You are my first subscriber, thanks! That's going to put a little pressure on me to get going on this thing. I have a fair amount of footage already if I can get it edited, even roughly. Don't think posting it will be hard. Put the sub-soiler on the NFE 45 today and got the garden mostly cleared off. Plow day tomorrow! I'm driving the 856 and 565 Oliver 5-16's up and a buddy is bringing the WFE 45 with 3-16's on the trailer. Will be a great day. Keep up the good work, always brightens my day when I see one of your videos pop up on the feed.
@@MikeJensen-wo7oh No pressure, Mike! I didn't have a clue how to make a video when I started, and I really still don't, but I enjoy doing it and it's fun getting to interact with people on here. Editing isn't too bad, just make sure you can find the "undo" button LOL (I use that a lot) Plow day sounds like a blast! The 856 and the 5 bottom sounds like a fun combination. I had a 3-16 for my WD45, it pulled it but it was really a load for it. I had to leave the loader on for weight to plow with it or else the front end wouldn't stay on the ground. I ended up selling it and buying a 3-14, it handles it a lot better. Thank you for the kind words, Mike! I'm glad you enjoy what I post. I don't feel like mine are that great but I try. Hope you have a great plow day!
@@MikeJensen-wo7oh Hey Mike, just watched your video! Just a couple things I wanted to say: not sure if you wanted the comments turned off or not, but if you want comments on the videos, you have to set it as NOT made for kids. I set mine as "made for kids" when I started, and I ended up changing that setting. Just a heads up, youtube doesn't make that real clear. Also, is it ok if I do a quick shout out video for your channel? Not that I have tons of viewers but it might help send a few people your way. Awesome video, Mike! Hope you have a good one
@@evanaustin2636 Thanks Evan! I changed it to not made for kids but it seems to still not be accepting comments. I've got quite a bit more stuff to post so we'll see how it goes. By all means, the shout out video would be great. Sometime in the future I intend to make one explaining how I got to here. Watching channels like yours and Chris and Ross, etc. I posted a link on Red Power today and got good reviews there and picked up a couple subscribers. Will post it on Unofficial Allis board in the morning. Take care, Mike.
Probably the slop in the monkey motion of the hitches that makes it snake down the road. We pull the drill behind the cultipacker, it's pretty good.. but we used to pull it behind the little disc sometimes, when it was too wet. The OLD JD disc hitches are a loose bunch of Monkey motion to begin with.. being probably 70+ years old, it's not good on the road.. And now we know why you just can't have nice things.. lol. New or old, everything breaks! Good to see you getting it done!! Put your helper on the tractor next year 👍 Thank you Evan! Have a good one!!
Yeah, the disc didn’t like that rock. I’ve gotten a lot of crap out of this field, either rocks or bricks or chunks of old clay tile. I tried ratchet straps from one corner of the disc and drill to the hitch pin to try and get the slop out and it didn’t help. They are both tail heavy and pulling them together just doesn’t seem to work. But they do a good enough job for me. Thanks for watching, Ed! Hope you have a good day!!!
Well darn on the disc, doesn't look too bad to fix. Glad you got that done. I had oats for a couple years, then planted peas, plowed them under like this year, then went to wheat in the fall. I had a great crop of wheat that year. I tried repeating that this year but the lack of rain really caused problems.
Thanks Rusty!! The disc shouldn’t be too bad to fix. It definitely didn’t like that rock Lol. We’re starting to get a few rain chances in the forecast but they haven’t materialized yet. It felt good to get the Allis back out. Hope you have a good one Rusty!!!
Wow 🤯, that is definitely worse for wear
It was a question of when it would happen. When you burn a quart of oil every 3 or 4 hours, you have to expect a few fouled plugs LOL
