Town Mall of Westminster - Dead but Charming Mall!
Today we visit Town Mall of Westminster in Westminster, MD.
This mall is "out in the country" in Carroll County Maryland, about 30 miles northwest of Baltimore. While approximately 50% of the store fronts are occupied, the stores that were open on this Monday were actually cute.

JC Penney: A Retail History

My cousins lived there when I was a kid. So we used to go to the movies here a bunch. I think the last time I went to that mall was to see return of the king on Christmas like what 20 years ago?.. it’s not too far from me though. Crazy to me though that our mall in Frederick is still pretty busy. Frederick does have like 4+ times the amount of population as Westminster, so that’s probably why. I had to come back and edit this after seeing the little ramp area where KB toys was, and a comic book store. Just made me remember being obsessed with x men. Carroll county is wild though. Not somewhere that I choose to go when not working. Weird religious and political merch in a sports store is on brand for that county. Sticks out as the most odd county that doesn’t seem to belong in central Maryland.

Fashion Square was always "my" mall. I moved to Orlando in 1997 and quickly got a job working at a video store called Saturday Matinee upstairs where the movie theater now is. In 2004, when hurricane Charley hit, the mall was our savior, offering an air conditioned space to retreat to during the 2 weeks we spent without electricity in the brutal Floridian August heat. I remember when the bowling alley/ arcade was added. It was fun for awhile. To be honest, I will be sad to see this mall finally close, as it has played a significant role throughout my adult life. My daughter has a number of photos with Santa, who used to be stationed on the small platform directly across from the escalator. I will always remember this mall as the bustling and busy place that it once was. It's hard to let it go. P.S. The Premiere cinemas movies theater still has the best popcorn in Orlando, and is also the most reasonably priced theater around.

Old comment but this was a fun video. Some things you wouldn't know unless you lived in the area for a long time but there actually used to be 3 different puppy stores in that mall at separate times. They would never last more than a few years but they were all in separate locations within the mall. There used to also be 2 sperate gamestops both open at the same time in the mall, one next to the rue 22, the other at the side where amc (that one stayed longer). There used to be a Chic-fil-a and Starbucks, in the food court there was a large merry-go-round (the ones you see at fairs). At the center of the mall was the kids area but that was moved as seen in the video. Outside the food court there was a large fountain. Sadly many of the newer smaller stores dont last for more than a few months but they typically are small electronic or game merch stores or strange entertainment gaming/arcade spaces. During holidays they still do Easter events or meet Santa events.

When Sears sold it's credit card business in 2003 that was the beginning of the end for them. That was 60 percent of it's profit. The merger with Kame Apart in 2005 was another bad move. Kmart was a failure. After merging Kmart's bad management took control of them. Then they made even more bad decisions. I stopped buying from them in 2015 after they were not honoring their refrigerator warranty. By 2019 they were bankrupt.
