Part of the reason Belk has done a little better than Macy’s I believe is because Belk doesn’t have all of their stores in malls. Many Belk stores are in suburban strip malls close to where people live and they do quite well.
This supports my assertion that I’ve stated for a while that it’s not the internet that has killed malls. It’s that malls have become too much of a pain to get to relative to where people live. But, if there is a big department store close to where people live in the suburbs then people will shop there.
Perhaps a video should be made about why so many malls are a pain to get to. I attribute it to decades of neglect of our infrastructure combined with county and state corruption allowing developers to build anywhere without contributing to the cost of building the road infrastructure to prevent congestion near these malls.
The number one reason I believe people don’t go to malls is that it’s too time consuming and a headache getting to a mall and back because of congested traffic and too many stop lights. This is the fault of atrociously bad state and county government planning and decades of lack of federal funding for the nation’s infrastructure.

Belk is cool, not near as nice as Dillards but way better than Kohl’s. Our Belk is in a dead mall in a store that used to be Parisian. Now that was a great department store, Parisian was the best!
