In this anime video essay I discuss the production of Haikyuu!! The Movie Battle at the Garbage Dump. This film is a contreveseail one as it cuts so much material from the manga. however, many elements from the production are as good or better than anything we have gotten from the series so far. In this video I will go over many of the elements and approaches to the story from Kenma's perspective.

    For whoever wonder who is the best setter in Haikyuu, I recommend to rewatch the anime from the earlier series. It is clear that Kageyama's journey is to become the best setter, that's why he is the final boss (not Oikawa as in Argentina). Do you know what's that mean? Yeah, Kageyama has mastered whatever Oikawa mastered and he also has mastered whatever Atsumu mastered (even that crazy move Atsumu did, ref. Nekoma match and Kamomedai match). He also learned court control from Kenma. So, it makes sense that Kageyama is the final boss. Even in that MSBY vs Adlers, Kageyama seems to not doing his 100% because many tricks he has done in pre-timeskip aren't shown in that match (Ukai and Yachi confirmed it). And stop with the argument who can pull of 100-120% spikers abilities because Kageyama has shown us that in season 4. In this terms, I can say for sure that Kageyama and Oikawa can pull off 120% of spiker's abilities, while Atsumu only able to pull off the 100%. The reason is because Atsumu never once playing with an inexperienced team. Unlike Oikawa and Kageyama who has to deal with, dare I say, a weak Seijoh and an average Karasuno and a very inexperienced Hinata. Just how many hidden messages you missed guys? 😅 But, less assured. Having the best setter in the team doesn't guarantee the winning. It depends on many things, teammates, teamwork, etc.

More so now that all we have is this movie and another one that I can't, for the life of me, see how they'll adapt it in a way that makes sense. Please, the story telling is amazing all the way to even the very last panel, everything comes around and has a pay off, I really really recommend it

    I do think the movie is slightly better as a hinata vs kenma match than the manga, but I much prefer the manga because this is karasuno vs nekoma. Outside of MAYBE the 2nd official aoba johsai match this is the only match I genuinely care about all 14+ players in the match, and the movie cares about like 4 max. Also, outside of all the moments in the match itself, not opening the movie with an animated version of the coaches history is a crime

    This manga is so good that even though it cut many of the scenes from the match in the manga, this film was better and more enjoyable than literally every other piece of fiction i experience since the end of Haikyuu season 4. The rally with Kuro laughing after his receive gets me so hyped every time. The scene with coach Ukai reaching for a handshake through the screen might be my favourite moment in a film of all time.

    The beginning of this video describes it wonderfully. Everyone knew since the announcement of the movies that it would not be the same (and yes this is not ideal, I know, would love to see every since page and extra awesome anime-only stuff, yada yada)…I was there, I was super hyped, I enjoyed what was shown. The adaptation is different and gosh was it gorgeous to watch. Since I am a volleyball-fan, getting sooooo many perspectives, views and focus on the match itself was absolutely hype to me and for me, Haikyuu!! is hype, fun and a sports anime

    I've been very self conscious and never wanted to gather too much attention... only a movie as great as this one could make me, a 34 years old grumpy dude with a mindset like the one just said, give no importance at all to that thought for a few hours and let myself be misty eyed together with a lot people going so emotional... and all of that while I was wearing a Karasuno t-shirt during the whole afternoon. Nonsense short rambling, but that's an honest thought about the video. Summarizing with a bit more coherence, I enjoyed the movie a lot. Not every part of the manga could make it to the animation, but the crew made justice to the chosen parts. I felt like watching an IRL epic and frantic match, with the amazing bonus of this content being even better because it's Haikyuu!

  • @iamai_iggs
    @iamai_iggs 2 дня назад

    the movie lost its Haikyuu identity. if people want to experience a volleyball match closed to reality, they would just go and watch a real volleyball match. but Haikyuu has never been about just volleyball. people love Haikyuu because of its storytelling and characters, which then make them love volleyball. it's not the other way around. the technical aspects of this movie, while impressive, when done at the cost of its storytelling and character development, make the movie into more of a fluff piece. it feels like an attempt to participate in the arms race of the anime industry where studios constantly push their products to higher level of graphics and visuals, using more expensive technology and overall bloating the whole production. when the technologically advanced animation doesn't serve the story and its score beauty is sacrificed instead, then what do we need these impressive visuals for?

    I like the idea of looking at the movie in a different way from the manga. And I did enjoy the experience (saw jt twice in the cinema) However, I’ve been wanting to read this match again, but I’m a bit scared that I’ll get angry at the movie. It only makes me wonder what else they will cut out in the future I remember reading this as it came out and, man, was it stressful

  • @OsSas3
    @OsSas3 2 дня назад

    I have to disagree with the beggining of the match/movie/manga. I'll change in a hearbeat watching Kenma having the same dialogue we already experienced in the anime with Hinata with UkaixNekomata story, because you enfatize how this match is not an old rivalry between two old guys is not also about a new rivalry between two new guys, this rivalry competes every new generation that comes, the idea is not to focus in just two opposite guys, it signifies how after these two players go pass their high school experience, new players from Karasuno and Kenoma will come and the rivalry will prevail. That is what the director and movie sacrificed.

    • @OsSas3
      @OsSas3 2 дня назад

      Also, we got the Kenma and Hinata conversation two times in this movie, fron Kuroo perspective! For me, a fan, that's more than enough cause I'm already aware what it means, so I felt frustated how many things should've been cut in order to favor the central message of the match. It all comes down to what you said at the beggining: We have to mentalize since the announcement "This is not going to be like the manga" and that's just sad.

  • @starvein8841
    @starvein8841 2 дня назад

    I think no one would disagree that the movie certainly cut out a lot of moments from the manga. But, what we get in return, is a fast paced and very "true to reality" volleyball match. Which, I think is invaluable. In an ideal world, we would have our cake and eat it too--we'd get a longer adaptation of the movie in a 6 to 8 episode arc like we got with the Demon Slayer movie a few years back. And the movie vs the "tv show" format would each have their own merits in watching. As for me, I say I prefer what the movie does vs making it more like the anime with "extended scenes". We have the manga, and I hope it encourages more people to buy it, but this movie is probably the best representation of a sports match we have in ANY form of animation. I think it's pretty special that so many people are so passionate about Haikyuu. It makes me hopeful that the production team (maybe even Furudate themself) will see this, and continue to work on Haikyuu beyond just the next movie. There's still so much good story to tell, so much that could be done for a sequel manga series (Hinata's sister for a girl's volleyball team perspective, for example), that I hope we can get some more out of this fantastic story.

    • @OsSas3
      @OsSas3 2 дня назад

      I just don't get the comments about a "true to reality" volleyball match. Since the first point, we go back to flashback, cutting the "fast paced" match that we're watching and it goes on and on trough the movie. The movie does exactly what the anime/series does, it feel fast paced cause it is, it's not developing characters besides Hinata, Kenma and maybe Kuroo and Tsukishima. I can only praise the POV scenes that brought something new to Haikyuu. This feels more like an extended OVA (Land vs Air) than a "real time" volleyball match.

    You know, hypothetically if the series continued as a series rather than movies, I would like to think that S5 would have been the Karasuno vs Nekoma match and ends with the Fukurodani vs Mujinazaka. A lot of the big moments from these two games would have set up the Karasuno vs Kamomedai showdown which you have explained in your vids like the one talking about what it means to be the ace. S6, similar to S3, would only cover the Karasuno vs Kamomedai match as this will the "battle of little giants" so it kinda deserves its own season as it feels like a big event which it is. Then finally S7 could have been the Brazil arc and end with the MSBY vs Adlers match, thus bringing the series to an end. It will always be sad to hear that they are only doing movies but I hope that maybe they change their mind and focus on giving this series a full ending.

    10:08 This is I personally have to disagree. I, for one, feel that the manga had a stronger feeling of Hinata being shut down, because you notice something is off from almost the start of the match, even before the characters mention that Hinata is being used, and same when they started using Noya, I felt something was wrong but didn't know what until the characters explained what was happening. Of course, it's my experience, but I felt Hinata was way more caged in the manga, and it felt like there was truly no way out

    For me i had no issue disliking the film but admit it is a good match. If i only stayed with the anime than this would be a 8/10. But seeing the growth and heart of everyone big moment and the pov i just never got into it. I never felt the sludge match or tireness since it was mainly focus on kenma. This style would had been great vs their next match. In that part they only hsd a hand full of inner dialogs and the big emotions was established pre match so we could enjoy a fast pace pov match. But this match TO ME was everyone everyone, the 40 year rivalry geeting relite by the new generation. Yes it wasn't about them but this only happened because of the old man history, kuroo wouldn't care or help kurasuno if it wasn't for the goal to have this match. Noya felt like he took the number 1 libero medal in this match, stuki and Yamaguchi role is on full display and without reading the manga you wouldn't know the 300% brain power kageyama doing to perfect his serve and hinata tiny hopes he getting for the big dun spike. The film is great for an animated sport game. But too much was taken away for me to go back and rewatch.

    To me, this was a clear example of how two storytelling mediums can show their own "magic." I found myself not being upset only because they were both able to shine through what they do best. Manga has the depth and character moments. The animation has the sense of urgency, the voice acting etc. So as much as I enjoy the parts they omitted, what they DID show was phenomenal and that's honestly alright with me.

    What hurts the most about the haikyuu movies is that generally, once something gets animated, no other studio is going to animate it again. So if it isn't perfect when it's animated the first time, it will never be fixed. Meaning all the cut scenes from the manga will never see the light of day, unless a fan decides to animate them.
