I review movies I'm passionate about. Usually Hollywood classics, Chinese films (I've watched hundreds), French New Wave films, Disney, and yes that's a random collection. There are two rules: 1) It must be a film I am personally passionate about, in a positive way. 2) It can't be something everyone else is discussing.
...Well, those rules are more like guidelines.
...Well, those rules are more like guidelines.
the Fate of Lee Khan - the Obsessive Goes to China (Ep 42)
An innkeeper and her four sexy, martial arts-loving waitresses go up against a dastardly general and his crew in this fun thriller from King Hu. Think Charlie's Angels as a thriller, but set in 13th century China.

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong and Shanghai Calling are two charming romcoms by Chinese-American directors, both about an Asian American trying to learn the ropes of living abroad. Each showcases its city in a way to induce strong nostalgia. Soul of the Sword - the Obsessive Goes to China (Ep 35)
A mate of mine told me this film was rubbish and he's incorrect. It's full of tension, you know it's going to kick off at some point and it thrives on atmosphere. I always think of it as The black tavern's more mature rival, like bars that are managed by different franchises. Feng Hsu for me is like King Hu's muse, she features in pretty much every one of his great films. I can't recall a film of his I have seen apart from Come drink with me that she wasn't in. Anyway really enjoyed this mister, thank you.
I can vouch for 2 of these 4, and will watch the others soon as I may. Can also agree with a LOT of the closing list, specifically, those I've seen. Wait... Gremlins 2? Ok, I'll give it a go...
Gremlins 2 is one of the most bizarre films ever made. Took a pretty normal (if classic) horror comedy and ran down the street screaming with it.
Pete could knock them back, i was working on the set. He did like a Guinness in Dublin, champers in frog land
You do get that impression. "Unhinged" is a word I'd use of most of his characters - Lawrence, Henry II, the director in the Stunt Man, the actor in My Favorite Year... Must have been some fuel behind all that.
@@paulthomas3247 He was always pissed not really unhinged, very intelligent.
In case anyone cares about the film list... Intolerence (1916) Sunrise: a Song of Two Humans (1927) Island of Lost Souls (1932) the Maltese Falcon (1941) Ball of Fire (1941) the Big Sleep (1946) Psycho (1960) 2001: a Space Odyssey (1968) the Empire Strikes Back (1980) Bullitt (1968) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) Blade Runner (1982) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Angel Heart (1987) Gremlins 2: the New Batch (1990) the Crying Game (1992) Fight Club (1999) Unbreakable (2000) the Host (2006) Children of Men (2006) Let the Right One In (2008) Dale & Tucker vs. Evil (2010) the Social Network (2010) Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) the Book of Life (2014) Get Out (2017) Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) Avengers: Endgame (2019) WandaVision (2021)
It was fun to remember this movie
Brilliant! I actually totally agree, we are treated to teasers, trailers, previews, reviews and it's so difficult to avoid. I actually think it's true of most entertainment mediums now. We have access to everything in the palm of our hands, all the time. Avoiding stuff is hard. About your comments regarding "twist" films not warranting second viewing, I disagree. Memento and Dead man's shoes both have twists, I have rewatched both once I had the reveal because I wanted to see how much stuff I didn't notice, but hey, we are all different. Thank you for not telling me about these films mate.
Thanks Mitch - always happy to hear from you! I hope I was clear that *SOME* twist films hold up to multiple viewings. I certainly would put Memento in that column, along with Empire, Falcon, Fight Club, and others.
@@paulthomas3247 have you seen Dead man's shoes mister?
Currently working on a review of Elevator to the Gallows, which is a grand example of the twist gone wrong.
I’ll paste what I commented on a video I saw before this just because I think it more aligns with this video but, the first half or so is so captivating and the second half is less so and I definitely feel that’s by design. This feels like a lot to wrap my brain around but it’s like he prefers the monotony of the second life and that’s okay. Like even down to both halves being about staying at a girls house for the night and being on top of the mountain with the different girls. One scenario feels magical and the other feels plain at least to me. But I don’t think he would’ve lasted very long with maud based on her values and if he pursued her instead of the blonde he would’ve been left wondering what could’ve been with the blonde.
So here's the thing: the narrator's passion for Francoise is an irrational crush, but it's also completely uninteresting. He throws out what as you say would probably be a short-lived fling with Maude that is far more exciting, but that relationship isn't necessarily doomed - except by him. I think you are 100% right that Rohmer makes the Francoise relationship less tantalizing than the Maude one on purpose. As an audience member, we want Maude, but being honest with himself, the director wants Francoise.
@@paulthomas3247 as someone who grew up Christian I was always in my head trying to find “the one” there was even a Christian blonde in highschool who I was for sure “the one” so I made sure to keep my purity or whatever until I “had her”. After I graduated highschool I started to change my beliefs slowly and now I’m at the point where watching this I would have much preferred being with maud, even if it was for a short period. So I ended up getting a lot of this movie that I really wasn’t anticipating going in
@@Tyler12905 Well, I ended up with a fairly Catholic blonde and I thank the Lord for her. If there's something this movie is about, it's growing and learning.
@@paulthomas3247 why do you think the the director wants Francoise? Does he see him self as a stand in for Jean Louis? And if so I wonder if he realized at some point that maud could have been a better match himself or if he wrote her to be a sort of temptation right before he finds his wife
'Child of Glass' is the one episode that left a lasting impression on me. It had such a powerful emotional pull that I still think about it today, long after the rest of the series faded from memory.
Thanks! This will be our next "date night".
Now if you say that you haven't seen another film like this, then I want to watch it. This one definitely made my list mister.
Please approach with all my caveats - it's all over the top adventure, and very silly in its grim way. But wow I did not see this one coming.
Great review!
Thanks so much for watching!
Ok, I'm in.
You'll dig it the most.
The old Soul Train Line footage in the movie was the first time seeing it back then. I was mesmerized.
I remember watching Soul Train in the 80s. The Walk really was epic.
I need to watch some Spike Lee as its been a very long time. It's funny how stuff can fall away from the radar.
For one of my favorite directors, he has had his share of stinkers. But when he's good, he's fantastic. Some that deserve more love are He Got Game, Mo' Better Blues, Da 5 Bloods, and the two I've reviewed recently. The popular ones are deservedly popular, though I find Malcom X tonally all over the map.
Thanks for sharing -- these old Spike Lee joints remind me of growing up as a kid in BK

One of my favorite actors. The one word he always exuded was, class.

Far warning there are some very dark themes.
how clever of you to time this video with Shout’s announcement of Dark Crystal and Labyrinth 4K collections from today!
I wish I were that clever and organized! This was actually because of delays on two other videos that are lacking one or two video clips.
It's weird that I never even considered Jim Henson creating film outside of that of the muppets but why wouldn't he? Interesting video.
I always had a theory that the Storyteller and the soldier were the same person.
That had occurred to me as well. But he does have "A Story Short" to give his own origin story.
@@paulthomas3247 True but that only showed him as a beggar and later how he became the King's Storyteller. We don't know what he did before that
This movie scarred the shit out of me when I was little
This was the first scary movie I ever saw. I wouldn’t say it scared me, but I was obsessed. For years, I could never figure out what the movie was until I was in my early 20s. (late-1990’s) I figured it out and my dad just happened to have recorded it onto VHS in the 80s, so I finally got to see it again. I never read the book, but I live a few blocks away from the “Williams St. Trestle.” Never really heard it called that, but if it’s a trolly line then it’s the Interurban line. It was basically trolley/passenger train that went from one town to another about 40-50 miles away in several directions. I know that because Richard Peck grew up probably 10-15 miles from where I live.
@@riot4jem so glad you checked out my video! The book is really good - so much better than the movie, probably more so if you know the area. But like you, this was one of my very first scary movies and I love it.

@@mitchsfridaynightsongclub2594 thanks and sorry for the glitch. There were two audio errors I needed to fix so it was down for about 15 minutes.
My dubious claim to fame is having upset Christophe Lambert at a convention in Melbourne by describing it as "an obscure little French movie", which, to be fair, it is for most Australians. I first saw it (subtitled) in an art house cinema. The soundtrack was difficult to find, and video releases nearly non-existent. I love this movie.
You have my sympathy! I had a French VHS copy that a girlfriend melted by burning a candle on it; a Korean VHS dubbed in English that was intolerable; and finally my trusty VO DVD. The soundtrack, though, I grabbed at a record store in Strasbourg in 1996 and has never left my tight little grip.
Oh you mean ''Laura.'' The way you say it sounds like you're clearing your throat.😅
@@blackbird5634 As I said in another review, I recognize that my French is pretty bad.
@@paulthomas3247 My apologies, I was just trying to be a little snarky. No real criticism is meant by it.😉 * To be honest I'm glad Claire winds up with the kind of boring, but handsome young man regardless of his infidelity. Watching this film, I didn't want to see the (hairy bearded) older man have an affair with this young girl, the imagery is too awful. I've been young, and handsome and emptyheaded, it's wonderful! Especially in the summer.😍🥰
My intro to Kurosawa came via Zatoichi meets Yojimbo - which given how revered Toshiro Mifune is and how brilliant Katsu portrays the blind swordsman, is actually a bit of a let down. I have only seen a couple of his films and although I like them, I probably need to spend more time exploring his filmography. However doing stuff like is always fraught with danger as I, like yourself have a tendency to become obsessed. I remember you telling me you saw this, I am glad you are exploring Japanese cinema and it's great that it's kind of out of your comfort zone. As always, your videos are a pleasure to watch.
My two strengths in Japanese cinema are actually Kurosawa and Godzilla. I can't believe it's taken me this long to get to Drunken Angel, which is really amazing. Throne of Blood will follow fairly soon... You know my Shakespeare addiction. But following Drunken Angel, Naked Island and Dead End Drive-In, I am overdue for some lighter content, first.
IWhy was cantinflas cast in the movie? I believe they needed funds for the movie, so theya asked Cantinflas to invest money in the movie. They offered him a less important role in the movie but he did not accept but after he was given the role of paspartout.
Hi Paul. I'm only recently curious about Fred & Ginger. I'm 57 and I feel like I've just been asleep at the wheel. But they are indeed fascinating and what talent! I just wanted to say thanks for your fun and informative video. I appreciated the time and thought put into this. 🙂
Hey, thanks for watching! I had the advantage of living in the middle of nowhere with only one TV channel as a kid, and for some reason the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Network) decided we needed to see all 10 Fred & Ginger movies over a couple weeks. I was 9 and impressionable. Obviously, they haven't become any less exciting to me over the past 40+ years!
Thanks for showing the ending. I thought the brother had died at the end of the first Zatoichi movie, and yet, he's alive in the third movie.
Sorry, I hope that wasn't an ugly spoiler. I figure the movie works on a character level so well that plot twists aren't really an issue.
@@paulthomas3247 No, I meant that as a compliment, because when I watched the third movie, I wondered if I had misremembered the brother drowning at the end of the first movie.

Australia was prolific in the 80s. I bet you never realized that Race for the Yankee Zephyr (starring Donald Pleasance and Leslie Ann-Warren) was an Ozzie film as well.
@@paulthomas3247 Oddly, I did know that one, but definitely a "just happen to have read" kind of fact.
Michelle Picoli as the Artist puts in a mighty performance also.
That's for sure. But I'd known Picoli as a strong actor for years before seeing this, and sadly knew Beart mostly as a beautiful woman before she knocked me over in this. Frenhofer is a GREAT performance.
Brilliant movie i first saw in the early 90s here in Australia on SBS tv
Ah, Australia. If you showed this on mainstream American TV it'd be only an hour long!
Ha ha ha, BMX Bandits, now there is a film I've not seen in yonks. I would seriously recommend Not Quite Hollywood though, if you can find it.
