  • The Little Mermaid was a major reason for Disney's returning as one of the world's biggest studios. It's also a great movie about being a father.
My next epic kung fu review has been delayed due to technical issues, but is on its way.

When I first moved in with my step daughter 32 years ago this was one of around 4 VHS films I was made to endure on constant repeat.
When I first started coming to and from Scotland before moving here some 6 years ago, my partners kids would be watching it on dvd.
Its probably been more of an influence on my role as a parent than I give it credit.
The delay of the kung fu upload has been worth it (yes I do read what you put in the description) Thank you Paul.

Thanks, man. Your support is always felt. I hope to do the "family review" (i.e. getting the wife's feedback) of the first SB one tomorrow, and maybe the other - which I am equally excited about - soon after.

    Local Dad says: Yep.
And yes, The Incredibles is absolutely the other Disney animated that matches its quality and quantity of dadfulness.

About Time has a pretty good claim to the title too. Also, Bill Nighy.

Amazing video! The Little Mermaid is my favorite movie, and shows a very complicated family dynamic that almost anyone can resonate with depending on the stage of life you're in.
Also, in regards to Triton and Ursula's relationship which you questioned at 0:44, the original movie has something different! They were going to be siblings before eventually scraping the idea, but in the original storyboards for "Poor Unfortunate Souls," there's a cut scene with Ariel and Ursula where Ursula complains about being banished and Ariel says that she tried to overthrow Triton. So most likely she was just a normal resident, possibly someone who worked under him, and was eventually exiled for challenging Triton's authority. Which would've been interesting to see in a prequel of some kind!
Edit: here's the video if you'd like to take a look at it!

First, thank you for the generous praise! I am glad this hit home with another big fan of the movie.
Your background information is real, and would have contradicted my idea of it had made it into the movie. My take on it is that what I receive as an audience member is the full work of art. Any making-of additions are extraneous, and we are free to accept or disregard them. (This goes against my Ferris Beuler video, sort of, but I still take the final movie as final.) Thank you for your insights and theory! And especially thank you for watching

@@paulthomas3247 You're very welcome!! Thank you for making such an insightful video!!
And I agree with you on that, if it's not in the final product then the info behind the scenes should be taken with a grain of salt, because you have to wonder why it was removed to begin with / how accurate it is to the completely polished story. It's a neat fact though!! Understandable why they removed it, since we don't need to know that backstory for the movie to make sense. And looking through all of the deleted scenes, most of them were cut out just because the movie was getting too long. It's a good rule to go by, since you know everything that's canon is right in front of you!
Back to the video itself though, you don't see many videos like these on the Disney classics, but I really did enjoy it a lot. You didn't have any bias towards either side, and instead looked for all of the different perspectives, when many people think they need to pick someone to hate. And most of the time, it's Ariel. I was very happy going into this video without having to worry about another "Ariel is stupid/selfish" Rant, and as a young adult myself I can say that Ariel is the most realistically written teenager I've seen in a while. Wanting to grow up and get ahead in life, but also being reckless and not considering other people's feelings in the heat of the moment. This, along with many other reasons, is why she has always been my favorite Disney princess! 🫶
TLDR, You basically explained my thoughts on this family relationship better than I ever could, and the journey they both go on in order to meet halfway is a huge part of this movie's charm for me. Great work!
