- The original arthouse conversation starter, Alain Resnais’ 1961 baffling masterpiece is a murder mystery romance theological horror show with heavy influences in Western cinema. I try to talk about a few of them: Pulp Fiction, Inception, Top Hat, Before Sunrise, Hiroshima Mon Amour, Mystery Train, and more.

the best way to view last year of Marienbad is to interpret ij the line wit the novel "the invention of morel"...the plot matches the novel.
though resnaise cleaverly masked it.
For a second I thought you had typed "The Invention of More!" which would have been funny. But you got it right and my chuckle was in vain.
@@paulthomas3247 excuse my typo...my keyboard is broken.
but on a serious note...i have read the invention of morel...and LYM matches the story, resnain might have the novel in mind while making the film, there is lot of similarities between the themes.
@@c.augustedupin8860 I actually really appreciate the insight. I *haven't* read the Invention of Morel, so I left that out of the video, but I've heard it's like this Marienbad with more backstory.
5:08 The antagonist is kinda living but yeah idk, like a haunted sense of living.
I suppose I meant he's the only ghost (?) who interacts in a meaningful, lifelike way with Jack Nicholson. Obviously there's the dead girls and the bathtub woman too, but the swarms of non-interactive hotel guests are what really reminded me of Marienbad.
