The Goalie That Could Change The Game
Dustin Wolf has been one of the best goalies in the NHL to start the 2024-25 season. Despite only being a rookie, Wolf has overcome a lot in his career thus far. As a 7th round NHL draft pick, the odds for him to make it even close to the NHL were always a longshot. Today, Wolf is a safe bet to challenge for the Calder Trophy, and, continuing at this pace, could even have a shot at the Vezina Trophy. So, let's take a look at the rise of Dustin Wolf, and how his ability and playstyle could potentially lead to a complete reevaluation of how teams and scouts view goalies in the draft.

The Tampa Bay Lightning: Life Without Stamkos
Просмотров 50514 дней назад
Steven Stamkos leaving Tampa Bay was probably the most significant news of the 2024 NHL offseason. Departing to the Nashville Predators, Stamkos left behind over 500 goals and 1000 points as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Now ~20 games into the new NHL season, we can see how that change has impacted Stamkos, Tampa Bay, and Nashville, as all three struggle to push further forwards towards ...

Height, while advantageous, is relatively unimportant if a goaltender can't block the puck. I also feel like folks who are at a relative disadvantage generally have better work ethic as they have to work harder to operate at a similar level compared to their taller counterparts.

If you actually watch this guy play you can see he's special in a lot of ways. The fundamentals of his movement and positioning are some of the best I've ever seen and then he also reads and anticipates better than practically any other goalie in the league. Those things together allow him to play at this level at his size because he's so precise.

Dustin Wolf!! I'm so glad that he's doing well so far. A young goalie's confidence can be destroyed with a bad start. I don't want to say 'calder contender' yet, there are still 60-odd games to play, but if he keeps it up, then just maybe. Side note, Wolf really, really reminds me of Mike Vernon in the 80s (not his catastrophic first season, either). They have a similar style, probably because they're more or less the same height/weight.

The minute you crown him he let's you down. He is a product of a team playing tight defensive hockey. So obviously his numbers are going to look amazing but I doubt he will ever be a franchise goalie. And IF he is one the calgary flames will waste his prime years staying in the mushy middle with no superstar in the system, no #1 centre and no game breakers. Always destined to be mediocre.

Jonathan quick is almost 40 and still a very good goaltender, same height and playstyle. Shesterkin is just a couple centimeters taller and is arguably the best goalie in the world. Saros is shorter and a top 5 goalie in the world. Size is important but also overrated in goaltending, and athletes can still perform very well into their mid 30s.

this surely has been a touchy subject. Here is how i see it. I am not even a tampa fan too btw. We all thought he would play his entire career with one team that team being the bolts and even people like jon cooper said he should and guys around the league like mcdavid as well. Ofc stammer himself wanted to as well and was willing to take quite the discount to do so (until he understandably was too tempted by nashville's offer) after lightning management didn't make enough of an effort themselves. I mean this is a guy who basically single handedly resurrected the lightning in their darkest time and made them into the world class organization since 2008 and captained them into a dynasty like timespan of dominance between 2015-2022. He was right up there with guys like ovi and crosby as the alpha dog of their generational and while he might not be as dominant individually as he was in the 2010s he is still going pretty strong today. Ofc he's one of the most gifted goal scorers ever but he's also one of the best captains ever and he has made so many players around him better as they built around him as the years went on. He also gave every fiber of his being not jsut too the team but the city of tampa. Back to on ice performance even after a couple significant injuries like the broken leg or busted knee he somehow managed to pick up where he left off when most people who are in those positions aren't ever the same again. While I was really hopeful he'd stay in tampa given that they will likely never see a player of his caliber again, i understand if the lightning front office felt differently I just wish they had made a better effort at communicating that to him rather than give one offer than make no further effort whatsoever knowing he'd hesitate at accepting it. Either throw more offers out there like 3 yrs for $4 million, 4 years $4-4.5 million or something like that since he was willing to take a big pay cut and ofc the term not being too long or short or simply say we gotta prioritize the teams long term potential. I am sure he would've been very appreciative to hear either the effort being put in if it meant throwing more offers out or the transparency if they want to go in a different direction. Sorry for long rant lol just a lot to reflect on.
