Why Veterans Need Combat Sports
As veterans, when we decide to hang up the uniform, it can leave a void. And it's crucial to fill this void with positive, constructive life choices. In this video, I make an argument for why I believe combat sports accomplish just that. I hope you enjoy it!

    I find this very useful and true. I'm starting med school in the future and these tips are great because it incorporates a bit of active learning. Outside of studying, most of what you listed can be subjected to reflection and learning like exercise and the effects it has on your body. Try connecting it to your specialization, etc. It's INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT to give time to yourself to properly orient your goals so as to never lose sight of what you really want to achieve in med school, and give your mind time to think.

    The single biggest and most dangerous con for me when I was a CNA working on Telemetry was the patient ratio. It was more often than not that CNAs there would have between 18 to 24 patients particularly overnight. I reported this to department manager and D.O.N. several times. I got fired a few weeks later for charting during OT cause I couldn't keep up. I was sad because I was wanted to be a RN in ICU/CCU. But I actually realized when I found a new career how relieved and happy I was in that new field. I worked with few nurses I respected and who helped when asked or without. But I also unfortunately worked with a bunch of nurses who treated CNAs as though we were their property and had one tell me I worked for her. I know their job wasn't easy but when multiple call lights are going off and they're sitting down scrolling through Facebook and not offering to help whatsoever; they got their sugars, BPs and I/Os super late and the doctors would ask why didn't they get them since I was busy. Very toxic and dangerous environment for both patients and staff. That was my personal experience. Glad I'm out of there to be honest

    As an LVN I was not an icu or er nurse. This was back in the 80’s. What do you do as a cna in these units? I loved medical surgical units back in the day. Everyone has a niche in medical care. I was a float and definitely should not have been in the er or icu

    • @JoshKorzan
      @JoshKorzan 2 месяца назад

      You pretty much perform the same duties as a CNA on the medical floors. But in the ICU, intubated patients require frequent repositioning and codes are more frequent. In the ER, I also did blood draws and splints.

  • @zuweiraissah3735
    @zuweiraissah3735 3 месяца назад

    Do you have to get ER certificate or you can you your CNA license

    • @JoshKorzan
      @JoshKorzan 2 месяца назад

      It’s on-the-job training. And you actually don’t need a CNA certification. There’s several titles for essentially the same job- nurse assistant, patient care technician, patient care provider, etc. CNA is the same but requires additional time and money for the course. I was a patient care technician/provider, but used CNA for the videos to make it easier for people to recognize what I’m talking about.

    • @JoshKorzan
      @JoshKorzan 2 месяца назад

      Hey Deniss! Hope med school is treating you well. Ya that's a tough one. I enjoy training Muay Thai and have similar concerns. I think if we're solely focused on brain health, even getting hit lightly is probably not great. But having the information is important so that we can at least be aware, prioritize what's important to us, make tradeoffs, and ultimately accept whatever consequences may come our way. And obviously there are some things we can do to reduce or eliminate damage. I.e., light sparring rather than hard sparring, work technique & drilling only, or to not do it at all. Hope that helps!

    What all did you learn in the ER as a CNA? I’ve always heard you learn a lot in the ER, like a lot more and it’ll give you a lot of experience for other fields. Is this true?

    • @JoshKorzan
      @JoshKorzan 7 месяцев назад

      I learned a lot in both the ICU & ER. For soft skills, the biggest thing was probably communicating with patients. I also learned a lot from observing different members of the healthcare team- thought process, protocols, procedures, & asking questions. As far as hard skills, in the ICU I learned how to move patients effectively, i.e., boosting, changing bedding- this becomes more complex with patients connected to a higher number of lines, tubes, & machines. A lot of CPR as well. In the ER, I learned splints & blood draws, in addition to using the other skills learned in the ICU. I also got floated to the other floors many times. In my opinion, the learning opportunities are greater in higher acuity settings like the ICU & ER. It's difficult to summarize everything learned in a short paragraph, but I hope this helps!
