puzzled, I don't know anyone who felt Niki was underrated, personally I always thought the most underrated was Denis Hulme
@@chrisbrooke1887 it’s because people in my generation often forget about him
Great video! I've always liked Nico Hulkenberg. He may have underperformed in his first couple seasons compared to what was expected of him being the next Schumacher, but after about his 4th season he has been extremely underrated.
...And I still believe both Moss and Hawthorn won the 1958 championship but anyway...
Where are Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli
They didn’t compete in 2024
Not to forget he gave holy Lewis the car to win 6-more Titles and don't argue that Roto Golff did most of the work, look where is Merc now and where was it then. And where is our tragically first F1 Hero who was killed by your crocket Colin 'the driver murder' Crapman, i am talking of course of Jochen Rindt.
Good video. As you point out, Lauda could have won the WDC in 1974. But for Nurburgring ‘76 he would’ve won that year’s championship, but more importantly Ferrari may not have needed to hire Reutemann/fire Regazzoni… Lauda may not have left for Brabham but instead stayed put. He’d probably have fared better in the Ferrari than he did in the Brabham in 1978 and indeed he may have also won the ‘79 WDC in place of Scheckter. Definitely Lauda should’ve had 3 championships at Ferrari and conceivably he could’ve had 4 or 5… With that said 😂 I’m still not sure I agree Lauda is the most underrated World Champion. @21.43 “This is definitely Zolder” is definitely La Source hairpin at Spa…?
I was being sarcastic about the hairpin
@@nedzosf1gridboxthanks obviously I missed the sarcasm
Thanks for telling a wee bit of the truth of Prost and choosing Nikki. Ok, you put up a blurb about Nannini having his arm amputated (by a helicopter blade on impact) You should do a video of him as he regularly outdueled Mansel and was offered the Ferrari seat before Mansel. Highly under remembered. His wet weather driving is what pointed to his high talent levels. This video is at the top of all videos F1 or otherwise I have ever watched. I look forward to others in your catalog. Good days to you my friend.
My heart has been broken for Pironi and his family all these years.
lewis is not the goat for sure, but i feel you didn,t give rosberg enough credit
@@darishadian3652 Rosberg was a good driver, nothing generational though. His stock when Mercedes got good in 2013/4 was similar to what Hulkenberg had in 2018 or 19, he really wasn’t god level. Nico didn’t win that title because he raised himself to Lewis’s level, Lewis lost it because he fell to Nico’s level
@@nedzosf1gridbox Yeah I agree, but also lewis' sheer succes is hard to deny, I personally put lewis third on my all time list in terms of greatness, whch factor raw talent, talent over career, prime, longevity, dificulty of acheivments and overall acheivments. In terms of raw pace, I placed him 7th, behind Schumi, Senna, Clark and Fangio, ascari, and Lauda, like you, but I feel his achievements and longevity is increadible. Lewis needs a quick car, i'd say top 3 on the grid, yes, but what he does with a quick car is crazy. Using the average per race in a season, lewis was more productive than nico every season they were together (Points per race started and finshed), he kinda got a bit unlucky. I agree that lewis is not the goat for sure, but Lewis was not in a position where he totlay lacked competion, unlike someone like max, and the longvity of being the most productive driver (Same metric) 9 times in 13 ocasions, and in the top 3 13 times in 15 ocasions 2007-2021. I respect your opinion, and I understand that you value talent and speed more than thier career, but I do feel that you were a bit rough with some of his acheivments. Great Vid tho, one of my favorite youtubers. Also sorry for some of my grammer. 😊✌
Superb biography Nedzo ... Niki is an absolute hero of mine ....he had it all ...superbly analytical mind that could set up cars and identify problems like no other ...no surprises Ferraris 70s renaissance was when he joined ... could have won the title in 74 ...should have in 76 ..and did in 75 and 77.. His time at Brabham was blighted by the criminally unreliable Alfa flat 12.. Lightning fast on race day his 84 title was a masterclass against all odds and an incredible team mate .. But above his talent always fair incredibly brave and forthright...and always always a gentleman.
You forgot to mention Piquet's most homophobic F1 driver award
As a kid Prost was my hero. Later Lauda became another hero of mine. Hakkinen Spa...maybe the most epic overtake ever...
Lauda`s brave is unmatched in history. And above all: He is the fastest man ever on the original 22,8km long Nürburgring Nordschleife. In 1975 he drove pole in 6:58 min for the German GP. Niki is the only man ever under 7 minutes ! Stefan Bellof drove 6:11 min in 1985 in a Porsche 956 Group C - But this time was driven on a 2 kilometer shorter track, 20,8 km, after the desaster the germans make with the old Ring and the building of the new horrible GP track.
I wouldn’t call the new GP circuit horrible. Given what it had to go up against it stands in its own right as a good venue with its own character and legacy. The Nordschleife could never continue as it was, and the new track might not capture even a fraction of what the Nordschleife was, but it’s still a very versatile venue
@@nedzosf1gridbox I mean not only the sad circuit layout, they destroy the landscape in horrible form. The best solution was to save the old part and modified only the real vintage Südschleife - beginning at the entry of the southcurve of the original Nordschleife - down to the village Müllenbach for the new GP track. So "new" and "old" would live today together...even including the prewar classic "Holztribüne" and the old pitlane. That mistake was made back in 1983...
The Sudschleife was a sad loss but in reality that and the Gesamstrecke were sparingly used in comparison to the Nordschleife. The Südschleife was only used for a bit of endurance racing and the Gesamstrecke’s lap record was set by Louis Chiron in 1931. Is it sad that a piece of history like that was lost? Yes, but the circuit couldn’t have survived in its old form. The sudschleife had the same characteristics as its big brother so it couldn’t have been readily adapted for modern racing, so an entirely new circuit was created. The new layout is definitely not as bad as you make out, nowadays it hosts every GT and endurance championship appropriate under the sun, and grew a classic status of its own removed from that of the Nordschleife. 1999, 2005, and many more races provided good entertainment. Would it have been cool to preserve the old Gesamstrecke, and not lose any of the history? Yes, but it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as practical nor logistically possible because they would need to build a new circuit somewhere else, away from the original track which people would have been a lot more irate about than simply doing over the Sudschleife, which had sparing if not non existent real racing memories in its own right or combined with the Nordschleife.
@@nedzosf1gridbox There was enough place to make a shorter new Südschleife, round about 4,5 km, with modern grandstands, Paddocks etc, combine it with the "Gegengerade" into the old Nordkurve" and back - For racers a stunning combination with the new and old track. No doubt, today it is no more possible to destroy the nature there like in 1983 - Even today - if you know the place back from the 60s and 70s - it seems like a battlefield. And for the sport a terrible lost.
Forgotten F1 champs would make a good video for drivers like Alan Jones and Jody Scheckter.
Scheckter especially
lauda underrated? what are you talking about?
Most people from my generation don’t rate him well
@@nedzosf1gridbox if you know laude you know hes a legend, so hes either unknown to new generation or legend but certainly not underrated
I agree with all points you made in this video. Except, I'd avoid comparisons between decades: I think that every decade has its own GOAT and Lauda is the 70s GOAT. He's underrated just because younger generations have little historical memory of the past.
The pictures should suit the commentary…
Where was that not the case mate?
@ Niki Lauda‘s Ferrari years…
There were only a few examples where the pictures don’t correspond with the track being mentioned but this wasn’t intentional, I only did this when the only decent pictures were heavily copyrighted. I did my best to
@@nedzosf1gridbox Due to these circumstances I didn‘t know about I tend to forgive you 😉 The more accurate your commentary is, the more striking the „wrong“ pictures appear, unfortunately…
Lol, that’s fair. Glad you pulled me up on it anyway
People who underrated Lauda frankly have no idea what they're talking about. In all seriousness read his autobiography. He is the precursor to Kimi and Oscar. Emotions in a race car are bad- whenever I had a big off I was driving with my emotions not my brain. But I heard you mention Tim Schenken. People who underrate Tim Schenken don't exist- he set a very low bar. And please work on your pronunciations.
Which pronunciations did I get wrong?
@@nedzosf1gridboxReutemann for one. It was always pronounced “Roy-ter-man” by the likes of Murray Walker and Simon Taylor www.google.com/search?q=pronounce+reutemann&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-au&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:d20548be,vid:eD5o5vvQ99A,st:0&vuanr=4
"Brabhams Larry Perkins" - wait, what? Question, what flag was he racing under.... Australia or USA. Brabham had pretty much always been a british outfit just founded and run by an aussie, so we can either say AUS/AUS or UK/US pairup depending on your point of view. Not being a particular Perkins fan im trying to wrack my mind remembering if id heard he had done F1, i know names like Vern Schuppan Tim Schenken and a couple of others but until Webber the only two well known aussie drivers were Sir Jack and Alan Jones. Plenty of our drivers did the world or national F1 championships then came back to oz and ended up in Group A/Supercars, were a couple that tried going in the other direction too (I think Lowndsey and Murphy off the top of my head were two) - but its still odd seeing certain names pop up in stories about people like Lauda or Hunt.
Perkins was Australian. Other Aussie drivers you didn’t mention were Tony Gaze, Brian McGuire, both Brabham sons Gary and David, and Warwick Brown
... for some stupid reason i have been sitting here waiting for you to talk about Alain Prost for the last 14 minutes with a monty python "YES GET ON WITH IT!" in my head and i dont know why.
The only Prosit I know, is when you say cheers in Austria.
Alan Jones
Jones was good but his prime was for three seasons at maximum, a very good driver but not enough longevity to be considered underrated imo
@@nedzosf1gridbox It's hard to be a champion and at the same time be underrated
It was his lung that was pumped for fluids not his stomach
Yea fair
Nikki Lauda being Underrated??! You can't be underrated when you're a Legend of the sport Nelson Piquet on the other hand is definitely underrated cuz he isn't talked about much compared to his contemporaries despite being a 3x Champion
This is more directed at the idea that although Lauda is respected he often isn’t seen in the same vein as Schumacher, senna, Prost or others especially by my generation
I'll criticize two major points. 1st, you say "if there is no contact". A rule is predetermined regardless of the outcome of the given situation. That's the most important part. Punishment doesn't apply differently if your rival has crashed or has heavy damage or light. 2nd point is not that obvious and people have different views. My opinion on defending by squeezing hard like Max and the situation with Michael you mentioned is strictly negative. Win or make a crash strategy is the worst driver mentality for me, it's ugly and dangerous.
Mazepin got a five second penalty for crowding someone to the inside when for example schumi in Hungary 2010 got no penalty. Stewards just aren’t consistent
Fangio is easily the most superior to his peers of any driver in F1 history. By math and general acclaim of his peers (except Moss) Fangio was the F1 GOAT of his time. Lemans, Targa Florio, The Nürburgring Nordschleife or Monaco, he was always a threat unlike any other driver. Then you include his early racing in Argentina he becomes legendary. Racing modified pre-war street cars for days on end over roads that today would be traversed by SUV's or ATV's Fangio won consistently....Because of the diversity and dominance in so many categories he must certainly be the best who ever turned a wheel in competition. In the best cars of his day on the greatest tracks of his time or driving absolute death trap sh*tboxes on dirt roads through deserts, jungles and terrifying mountain passes he won consistently and stood out among his peers like no one else before or since .....The GOAT racing driver
I'm not sure underrated as much as unappreciated. As you've pointed out his career was much more than what the movie shows, but that's what most people know him from. But he was always to be reckoned with when in a F1 car and his "f*ck you, I'm out of here" attitude hasn't been seen since. Favorite Nikki story : He's doing an interview and is asked how much his eff you attitude had cost him financially or career wise.. "Oh, I don't know or care. I was world champion 3 times but I said f*ck you to a lot of people when I was broke too"
Personally for me Alan Jones is my most underrated F1 champion
Thank you Nezdo, I knew all of this, but your story put it all in perspective. Yes the man was a great human being.
Is Lauda really considered underrated considering he got a whole Ron Howard movie dedicated to his story?
This tag is mostly aimed at people of my generation who just know him as “the guy who got Hamilton to go to Mercedes”
@ not sure that level of casual can really call themselves fans. If there’s a movie starring two Marvel guys scored by Hans Zimmer that came out just 11 years ago, and they still don’t know Niki Lauda, I don’t think they’re even paying attention to F1.
Don't know anyone who underrates Niki Lauda. Not anyone who wacthed him race.
This tag is mostly aimed at people of my generation who just know him as “the guy who got Hamilton to go to Mercedes”
What?
What do you mean mate
Agreed on the Kimi point. Are you interested to do a video on Kimi? Quote from Reddit "Raikkonen was 0.379 faster than Montoya in McLaren for 2006, in terms of median qualifying gap and 0.502 faster than DLR later that year. He was 8-2 against Montoya in races, while 7-1 against DLR in the 2nd half of the season. Montoya was slightly better than Ralf in races, from 2001-04, and slightly faster than Ralf in 2003/04 in qualifying average. Trulli was slightly better than Ralf in 2005/07 in races, while Ralf was slightly better in 2006. Alonso was slightly better than Trulli in 2004 and outperformed Trulli by 11-4 in 2003. If we consider Trulli/Ralf/Montoya somewhere in the same range, then Raikkonen was performing at Alonso's/Schumacher's level that year (Similar to 2003/04/05). Coming to 2007, Schumacher was almost half a second faster than Massa in 2006, and beat him by 14-4 in races, while Raikkonen was actually slower than Massa in qualifying average, and was better than him by 10-7 in races. He had definitely dropped off after Michelin tires were gone. " About Lauda beating Prost in 84 for counting races, I have not watched the races, so would like to know how you got 5 to 1 H2H in favor of Lauda. Germany Netherland Europe Portugal these are already 4 H2H wins to Prost. Monaco Lauda spun so thats 5 to Prost. Dallas they both crashed. South Africa you said Prost had an issue? So in reality Lauda only beat Prost in France and Canada? If that's the case, I would say like in 89, reliability decided the championship, not skill.
Also how he really performed against Piquet as teammates? Quick glance of stats showed they almost never finished together, but who led the most before cars failed?
I completely forgot Piquet was Lauda’s teammate in 79 to be honest as it was a nothing season for Niki. I have a stats sheet that removes caveats outside of mechanical issues for the likes of Prost and Lauda in 1984 and I may do a video on Kimi in the future
"To speak of Lauda is to speak of a legend" - Nigel Roebuck in his book, "Grand Prix Greats". So where does this 'underrated' tag stem from, after all a major Hollywood movie has been made about him and James Hunt? You touched on it at one point: "Newer F1 fans". Those of us old enough to have watched F1 in the 70s and 80s would be in no doubt about his greatness as a driver and a champion. When he retired after the 1985 season there was a collective cheer around the world that bowing out was one of the world's best. There's what I term "pre-Senna" and "post-Senna" F1 and F1 fans. Pre-Senna was the Ferrari flat 12 vs the Cosworth DFV, multiple race winners each season, no one could manage back to back world championships since 1960 and from 1976 to 1982 a different champion each season. When Senna went to McLaren it was the start of the big teams winning the vast majority of races each season, the number of race winners each season dropped, it was an era where 3 time, 4 time, 5, 6, 7 time world champions were now becoming more commonplace and the best drivers were just utterly dominating racing seasons. Senna, Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton and now Verstappen are overwhelmingly taking the attention of modern F1 fans and a 3 time champion who never had back to back titles and which were spread out over a 9 year period doesn't rank as highly in their perception even though Lauda had more rivals and technological challenges to contend with in his time.
I think you summed it up pretty well, I’m in a generation who seem to think Hamilton is the GOAT so visiting the likes of Lauda is untouched territory.
The silhouette on the thumbnail kind of looked like Jochen Rindt
Yea kinda
There are so many variables that deside who the champions are. For instance, if today's point system was applied to all the drivers of the past, Senna is only a 2 time champion, and Prost becomes a six time champion. That is just one simple thing that affects no race result, but it is a very powerful tool to put a more accurate out look on what the real Their is a reason that Prost was called the professor. In 2:15 Race at Monza Prost knew that his car would not last the race distance after just a few laps. He decided to go as fast as possible and push Senna into a fuel deficit so when Prosts car finally broke down, Senna had to slow right down to save fuel to finish the race. This brought the 2 Ferraris back into the picture as they were catching him quickly. This pushed Senna into a pass at the first chicane that was never going to work. He left the Williams of Jean Louis Schlessr with nowhere to, and they collided, forcing Senna to retire. This tactic not only forced his rival to score no points but cost Mclearn the perfect season of winning every race. As for Niki there is nothing left to be said. This video covered his career and life, leaving nothing left to be said other than his passing like all others is a great loss to the F1 world. A true great in all ages.
i think some of it is a bit subjective as well. what is a 'good' 'great' 'timeless' champion, the number of championships/race wins/points? attitude? personality? a combination? Schumacher is a half decent example, won a lot of championships yeah, got dq'ed from one, should not have been awarded his first, was a complete arrogant a hole, happy to to massively dodgy things, happy to tear one team apart to get them to back him, but definitely WAS an amazingly talented driver. If he had his 'post 'well shit im never winning again now in this team'' attitude when he got to Mercedes and chilled out, and been that guy *from day one* that smiley dude who was really fast but was just out there to have fun, would it have made him a better champion? or just change his attitude enough that he never became one in the first place?
This is a hill I’ll die on. Adelaide wasn’t his fault and didn’t decide the title. I’ve done videos where this incident is explained but I will always say that was a half hearted divebomb from Hill that was never going to work. Also if Hill wanted to win it, he should’ve done better, he had the fastest car and Schumi was banned or disqualified from four races yet he still didn’t win. It’s like people saying Hamilton lost 2021 at Abu Dhabi, what about Baku, Monza and other races where he made needless mistakes on top of the races like Silverstone and Hungary where his or his teammate’s action gave him essentially two more free points gains on max
"Better version of Kimi Raikkonen" After his comeback, he certainly was less impressive in qualifying with the Lotus but made up for it in the races on Sundays. Raikkonen would also be a 3-time champion if one nullified the races held on German circuits in 2003 and 2005. Something always seemed to go wrong over there during his McLaren days.
Fair points regarding his titles but I think my sentiments were still correct
@@nedzosf1gridbox Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you; just remembered this similarity in post-comeback qualifying form for them both - Lauda even winning a WDC with 0 poles during the season.
That Mercedes engine wasn't reliable enough.
Kimi’s Mercedes engines were pretty piss poor reliability wise
I'd say Nelson Piquet is more underrated.
He’s another future video topic
@nedzosf1gridbox I'm Brazilian so I remember vividly how it all began. Piquet didn't give a flying shoot about the press. Then comes Mansell and the entire Brit press hates Nelson and shortly afterwards the feud with Senna starts and the Brazilian press sides with the 'good guy'.
Underrated or most versatile? He won with a normally aspirated V-12 Ferrari, the ground effects Brabham fan car and finally in the McLaren-TAG. Very different cars and presumably driving techniques.
He said when driving the Brabham fan car it was the first time he had enough downforce to not need to powerslide through corners because he had so much grip. That’s a good point
You obviously don't know anything about f1, lauda was a legend, your a idiot fool
On Lauda, there are others I hold in a slightly higher regard but I mean 3 championships. What I will say about you having him as high as 5th which I mean fair lol, is that he was so fast death took 43 years to catch up. Hell, 76 unbelievable season despite missing 3 or 4 races, 77 ridiculous, 84 I respect Prost's decision and believe that Lauda deserved it all the same. Top 10 driver ever in my books may he rest well obviously.
...And we're back with Nedzo's F1 Grid Box lol! 😂😂
F1's most underrated champion is Nelson Piquet. Probably because of his controversial character and his rivalry with Mansell (which granted him the hate of the British press). It is interesting that Piquet actually was beating Lauda in his last season with Brabhan.
Piquet..Most underrated..
And today his daughter makes it all good again, by being the girlfried of Max 'The Tommyschreck' Verstappen.
Jenson button
Calling Lauda underrated is a bit of a stretch, there are more underrated Champions like Hulme, Piquet and Scheckter
@@Jorge.Painkiller piquet is tough to say nowadays, praising him given his off track record is a touchy subject. Watch out for my next video…
@@nedzosf1gridbox I'm latino and I can say that what he said in hispanic speaking countries does not have anywhere near the negative connotation than in the english speaking countries. And Piquet was one of the pioneers of tire strategies.
@ again that’s a difficult topic because I’ve heard some Portuguese people say it was offensive and some say it wasn’t. I know Latin American culture uses otherwise derogatory language in affectionate ways at times but I think I can’t make judgement on that particular case because I’m not a native Brazilian
@@Jorge.Painkiller none of them got cooked & then continued to more success to be fair.
And Mario Andretti...one of the most versatile drivers of all time. The only thing missing from his resumé was the 24 hrs of Le Mans.
Nike Lauda over his whole life was described many ways, most of them superlatives in recognition of how amazing he was. However, I can't recall him ever being described as underrated by anyone!
@@simonwhenlock it’s mostly the fact he’s never mentioned in the same breath as senna, Prost, Fangio or co by many people especially in my generation
Fantastic choice. Coming back from the Nurburgring accident and then withdrawing from Fuji when he realised his health and safety was more valuable than a championship. RIP Niki. 🙏
@crystalracing4794 I don't believe he makes that choice had he not won the one before but as lucky as Hunt was he took his chance tbf. The fact that he made a damn near full recovery from Sean Kingston burning fire 33 years before that actually happened is quite commendable. Only driver still to this day to win titles with both Ferrari and McLaren.
Lauda is one of my favourite F1 drivers of all time. The fact he had comebacks and won in two very different eras in F1 is extremely impressive.
Im big on Mansell not just because it was who me and my dad watched, but he goes and gets the 92 F1 championship with a broken neck, then goes and wins the 93 cart championship as a rookie with a hole in his back. Took him way too long to get his only Championship but was the only person to have ever held (or ever will hold) the F1 and Cart championships, producing the only time in history there was no Number 1 in formula 1 (Hill was 0) and the only rookie to win a race, or win a championship in Cart. Oh yeah then FIIIIIIIIINALLY comes back and wins in Adelaide a year later in 94.
I hate to admit it, but Lauda's crash got me into F1 as a six year old. The idea that some ppl were prepared to lay their lives on the line. And then I read an article about his recovery in Reader's Digest, and I was sold. It's not about being fast, it's about the willingness to do anything and everything to be up there. Now, I'm glad that it's so much safer now, even considering Grosjean, but it does take some of the heroism away. Verstappen makes, what, 25M a year? Why? He's not risking anything. It's a PR investment. Lauda never made that, and he still went out on track.
Max makes double or maybe triple that, it’s just because sport is general gets exponentially more popular and invested in every decade
@@Tacko14 also it’s completely normal for six year olds to be lured in by otherwise insensitive means. The first race that I know for a fact that I watched was Belgium 2012, that’s a similar if lesser example of what you explain
Lauda was in the best car. It's as simple as that. The Ferrari 312T versions were the overall best and most consistent F1 cars 1975-80. If Hunt was in that Ferrari he would have won more titles. Hunt was also unlucky that season. The McClaren was unreliable early on, failing to finish in 4 out of the first 6 races. Plus Ferrari making Hunt forfeit two races (Brands Hatch and Monza). There was actually nothing wrong with McClaren's fuel at Monza, forcing Hunt to start at the back of the grid. It was a false allegation. Italian dirty tricks. Both Hunt and Lauda actually finished the SAME number of races in 1976. 11 each. Hunt was a worthy champion with 69 points. Lauda was a legend but didn't excel in the 1970s when he wasn't in the best car around. Hunt did more with less.
The Ferrari was only the best from 75-77 and in 79. Lotus had the upper hand in 78 and Ferrari were tenth in the standings in 1980. The fact that even with Lauda’s two non scores in some of the races he finished later in the year that he was still within a point of james was impressive. Hunt was very fast but not as ruthlessly consistent as Lauda, who was undoubtedly the best driver in the grid in both 75 and 77, dominating respectable teammates. Hope you understand my logic
Very much enjoyed this video - Lauda was a fantastic driver and I agree deserves more respect. Prost is my all time favorite driver (I realize, not a popular opinion) and I really enjoyed watching him race Lauda (as well as Senna) in my early years of F1 fandom. Thanks for a great video!
