Datsun 240Z L24 Engine Full Rebuild - Start to Finish Restoration of a 50 Year Old Engine
This is an engine from a 1972 Datsun 240Z that I'm told was long ago abandoned in a field and the car and engine were separated. I rebuilt and restored this engine slowly over the course of 2 years and it's finally at a place where I'd say I'm done! The original plan was to build a metal test run stand for this and start the engine up, but at the moment I do not have a place to work and decided to build a wooden stand for it to sit inside my apartment until I have access to garage again. Maybe someday I'll even put it in a car! For now I just enjoy looking at it, hopefully it is now similar to the day it rolled out of the factory over 50 years ago.

This is well educative, but please add explanation just to illustrate what you are doing 😢
I have 16 videos on the engine rebuild process in a series with nearly 3 hours of narration of what I’m doing in detail, plus a ton of written content on my website. This video was just meant to be an entertaining recap of everything. Here is the series: ruclips.net/p/PLojCRUjbiVkHqHKtQJq4h9pKk9KkmjZnI&si=AS_3uHgMr2vta2iY
Podría conseguir esos manuales en Español, si alguien los tiene me vendrán bien
I watched your video and the one part I wanted to see was what size are the nuts that are holding the carburetor on the manifold and how did you remove the bottoms ones. Very hard to get to.
Nice video, although I was mostly interested in seeing how you installed the rear main cap side seals and rear main seal. Bummed that didn’t make it into the video.
I have a 1971 240z , lost the keys :( and I don't think the door locks match the ignition so can't use those to make a new key. Without a key code, is this the only option for a lost key?
I am the only owner of these carbs in my country..i am struggling to tune them here in uganda Eastern Africa
Hello, I have another video on rebuilding these carbs on my channel, and on my website there is a guide I wrote to tuning them. If you have any questions feel free to email me mark@zcarguide.com
hola a que cilindraje biene ese motor
Great job, that thing's a real beaut!
Would the valvoline Vr1 work for 280z engine?
I purchased a carb rebuild kit for my 240z from zcar guide website since September 2023 and never received it, sent an email an no response, watch out.
I am going to pick an L24 up soon. I'm so glad you have this documented!
Awesome helpful video! Thank you!!
Appreciate the content. What’s this book you’re referring too
that moment at 13:28 ... i little bit of me died ... :(
Wow when I had my 240z they did not make a Fujitsubo. I had to custom one off an EP3 Fujitsubo power getter
Nice job bro, i love the serie L from datsun ❤
Are you on any datsun page on FB?
When I first bought my 240Z, I used to take my car to a Datsun only repair shop. I watched as a mechanic installed new sparkplugs in a customer's car. After he performed the initial torquing of the sparkplugs, he loosened each sparkplug and retorqed them! He did this several times. When I asked him why he performed this torquing sequence, he said that he wanted to be sure that the sparkplugs' compression gaskets were fully compressed or the sparkplugs wouldn't be fully torqued. I have found this to be true when installing new sparkplugs in my Z! The sparkplugs for later model cars don't seem to need this procedure!
A couple of tips: Dealing with oil pan bolts in a car is a pain, replace them with studs and nuts. Instead of RTV, use Permatex No 3 aviation goo on paper gaskets, you can reuse them forever. Also works well on rubber gaskets like the rocker cover. Just don't spill it in your toolbox, you'll never get rid of it!
re gaskets: makes sense, I’ll look into that in the future. As for studs, the goal for this engine was high originality.
Nice resto. I like the idea of just building an engine for the sake of it.
Hi do you have carb ready to install for sale
Gorgeous! Looks so mint!
All those cad plated parts, did you strip them down and replate them or buy new ones? Excellent job on the rebuild, btw! Would very much like to see/hear the initial startup and tuning. Tuning SU side-draft carbs can be a pita... Make sure you have a flow meter...
Do you have a video of putting your distributor back together? Also I live outside Baltimore and would love to know who did your zinc plating?
Marquis Zinc in Dundalk!
Do you think this ignition switch would fit a Datsun/Nissan 200L 1979 model?
That is amazing! How long did this take?
My car is missing the bottom plastic pieces Is there a part number on it
Beautiful
Beautiful job!! The carbs and intake is so next level!!
Wow great job. A 1972 Z is a dream car I would love to have one day.
Beautiful🔥
Ima need you to rebuild my Datsun 240z’s original engine 😂🔥
Did you do the zinc plating and yellow chromate to the select parts in around the carbs? Where did you source the labels on the air cleaner housing? Satisfying to watch your process!
Labels are from ZCarDepot! Yes, I did 2 colors of zinc plating, clear and yellow/gold. Because this always gets questions: they typically charge $150 per color but did not charge me for the clear since it was only a few parts. The vast majority is yellow zinc.
I'm glad you asked this question. I was curious how he made those parts look better than new 😂
That a real purty engine you got there
Cleanest engine I’ve ever seen
I have no idea what is going on but it is like car primitive ttechnology and I love it
i’ve been waiting for this one.
Great work!
Awesome job! And great video!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Gonna have to work on those engine deadlifts
If I didn't build the stand I was just gonna have Evan and Clark throw it into my truck
You spelt Aras and Alex wrong
🦍
Nice job man! Have a Z to go with it?
Hey David, thank you! No car right now. I was told the engine and car were separated long ago and I bought the engine by itself. I am still really excited to build a test run stand for it someday but it would also be really cool to put this in a 240Z after that. I wish the 510 just had a bit more room, as that is what I would really love to put this in.
This man knows cars
😂
Great vid, thanks for sharing!
Damn son, I could eat off that engine
I'm currently building a 1/24 scale Hasegawa model of this car. Your video is a fantastic resource... thank you.
Hey, great to hear! If you have further questions the owner if this car has really researched it heavily and I believe his place Art N Motion cars in Florida sort of operates like a museum. Sounds like a cool project
Hi, please advise if there is a harmonic balancer for these L series motors. Any help will be appreciated
Hi Nathan. I’m sorry I didn’t get to this right away. I have seen a lot of people use a Super Damper product. It doesn’t seem like there are a ton of options. Can you rebuild your original?
Dope sound!
Latex gloves 🧤 what a @#ssy! Your mommy called. Din-din is ready precious.
lol I can’t believe I missed this incredible comment. Keep it coming. Is this a hobby?
Thanks for sharing. I also keep one of those small, 30cents note books in which I write important details like date and mileage of oil change and brand of oil. There's those little stickers that you stick on the door, pillar but in the note book you can write down other information like brake service, tyre change, engine, gearbox overhaul etc. This information would also be usefull to a new owner.
Hi, I'm reviving a 240z that has the exact same thermostat housing with the big outlet and the other 3 little. But the car is missing the 3 little hoses and I'm trying to figure out which lines they plug into. Got. A pic? I haven't found a diagram and it doesn't show in the manual. Thank you in advance and I love your rebuild!
