Mistakes were made during my first review of the Starlancer Max - namely in when it came to testing it in a combat scenario.
Well I had to retest it + so I used it to power through my bounty rep all the way up to ERT's.
Check out the video!

Starlancer MAX | Combat Performance | Full Tour | Honest Review | Star Citizen
If you're new don't buy star citizen, it's a griefers paradise that's void of content and buggy as hell.....
I mean - I just had 4 and a half hours of bug free gameplay. Start to finish Save Stanton Chapter 2 was pretty fun.
NONE ITS TOTALLY BUGGED
That's not true though. I just played 4 and a half hours.. during peak hours. Hardly an issue was had. Is it always like this? Pfft.. no.. but the game certainly isn't "totally bugged"
I own one but have avoided combat with it. This makes me a little more confident. I'd like to see how it performs with other players manning the turrets.
It takes some getting used to. I'll try and see of some of my org mates want to film some multi crew stuff.
The problem I have with this ship is that it randomly decides not to let you interact with it. You'll run into a bunker then when you come out you cannot get back into it, you can see it... It's there. You just seem to walk right through it. This happens at least once a day.
Wow - ok - this hasn't happened to me yet. Has this only happened since 4.0 dropped?
@ForgeCoreGaming This has been the whole time I have had it. I throw a Nursa Rover in the back and use it to run bunkers a lot. But it's not possible to "live on" because of it. For more than a day or two anyway. Next time it happens I think I am going to alt f4, and see if I come back to where I left and it's working again.
In the 1984 version of Elite, which was the big inspiration for Robert's space games, you could buy a docking computer, turn it on and it would fly to the space station and dock. Fully reliably.
Dangit Chris.. get it together man
That's true of Elite Dangerous today. In X4 Foundations, you can get NPC crew to autopilot, land, and takeoff for you, though to be fair it's a single player RTS.
The Starlancer TAC with two sheilds over the Max's one, is going to make the ship a tad op lol especially if you fully man all the guns
I agree that it would be pretty dang strong with a full crew. My gripe with that is then you're just 2 people shy of crewing a Polaris. Don't get me wrong, I'll be using the TAC when it comes out.
For combat with the SMAX I've found that gimbal mode is really good if you keep your targets above and below your frontal view. The gimbals have a really great range of motion and you can keep up with some lighter ships for longer than you could if you weren't using gimbals.
Nice - I'll try this out!
Have you exchanged the lasers in both turrets with ballistics yet? If done you'll have enough power to run everything onboard at max setting every pip of power is in use and no empty slots left, however the biggest improvement is your 4 main lasers will get a full charge as in more phew phew before empty (in standard config you'll be some shots short as it's shared between main and turrets) especially good against bigger targets, where if not full charge with some "ease" you take their shields down but are now out of shots and have to wait the charge is rebuild then only to see shields are back up even if minimal vs with full charge shields down with "ease" but still have some shots left and those big guns hurt..
When I run it solo (as I did in the video), I actually just take the turret guns off. So yeah I was maxed out power all the way around :)
@@ForgeCoreGaming Excellent, on mine switched to ballistics, first for power though also if/when someone comes along and not having to fly all over place to locate the guns
Suggestion: Don't get into a turning fight with the enemy. You should try the old "Reverski". It plays to the strengths of medium and large ships, while handicapping your enemy (be it small, med, or large). The technique is as follows; keep your speed up as you approach on a parallel course to the target. Disengage Flight Assist on the merge and your forward thrust, using only vector thrust to keep yourself going. Engage by rotating around the target so that he ends up chasing you. Once you are past him, keep max reverse thrust, and use vector thrust+boost to dodge or line up shots If he chases you he'll be in a narrow cone where he is easier to engage (reduced deflection). Moreover, he's flying into your gunfire, which adds to your effective range and adds his vector to your projectile speed. You, on the other hand, are flying away, and that will be a penalty on his range and effective projectile speed. That works very well against ships such as the Hammerhead, giving you the ability to hit without getting hit at the edge of the weapon's range. It will also work well against fighters by forcing them into long run-ins if they want to joust. This works great with manned turrets too, as it limits the tumbling and allows the gunners to stay on target.
Slow to maneuver ships and Attritions isn’t a good combo. I guess you can do PVE with anything but I find high Ammo speed helps with slow ships. I’d stick with the CF series for a snail ship
Your mistake is comparing it to the Guardian, the Redeemer and the Paladin, which makes absolutely no sense. It's a ship for people who want something in between the Connies and the 600i with more focus on cargo without completely abandoning the multi-role playstyle. For high-end combat missions you need to be creative. Even the Connies and 600i can get rattled on those so you shouldn't fly in the middle and try to tank all enemies at once. Fortunately for that the ship has a lot of missile firepower.
I wasn't comparing it to those ships per se. Especially not as a base for performance metrics. I DID test one ship against the other simply as a way of seeing: does a slower ship with more hp & shield outperform a faster ship with less shield & hp. The Paladin & Redeemer statement was just a statement of what it reminded me of. Don't read too much into it. I also never piloted right into the middle of a bunch of large ships. I always skirted on the outside - the issue was that ships move around & you eventually end up in the middle of a bunch of enemies.
I do enjoy my StarLancer. Definitely looking forward to the Tac coming out.
Same here!
What a horrible poor cockpit view...
Sigh.. yep
''Enginneering/Fire Management and Life Support'' we need these core features ingame asoon as possible to make some common sense of SOLO gameplay, solo gameplay needs to be put in its rightful place, atm its an OP circus with SOLO Polaris/Carrack and the like. The Starlancer is the afterbirth of the BLD, bloated, wasteful and clumsy, and a pirates wet dream.
one thing i recommend is learning how to use the weapons in gimbal mode, the vertical rotation of the guns in both the Starlancer and Freelancer are STUPID, as long as you keep enemy ships in your vertical axis hitting them is like playing with aimbots when using gimbal mode.
Also one more thing, if you're running the ship solo , when possible swap the 4 pilot guns for attrition's, and one of the turret guns to ballistic (or simply leave a turret without weapons), revenants if possible, having 2 ballistic weapons makes it so the attrition (or any other laser/energy weapon) gets the maximum, or close to capacitor size, meaning you go from 50 shots per gun to 75 or more.
I actually like the idea of revisiting the S'max (sorry), with changes to flight models, weapon tunings, and just about everything else on the way it makes sense to get a baseline for a well-rounded ship
I agree
MISC by lore has Xi'an engine tech, and is the only human company that does. Yet somehow MISC ships end up being slower than both Alien and Human ships, so what's the point? So far the only ships we see make great use of Xi'an thruster tech have been Mirai Fury, Pulse, and Guardian. Maybe I'm asking a lot, but I want manufacturer lore to mean something other than design language, otherwise why bother mentioning it?
Solid points here. It doesn't really make sense lol
When I tried the MAX I kept getting killed by ships I could not even see. Do not know if I had bad luck with stealth ships or if the servers were just so badly bugged but being slow and unable to respond to attacks coming from who knows where put me off the ship. I find I prefer ships that can use speed when things get sticky.
My guy here takin a cargo vessel into a combat situation. For science.
I had to do it
It's not a cargo ship it's a multi-role ship.
You know a ship I have been using for solo ERT vaughn missions... the Misc starfarer g, the thing has the same pilot guns as the starlancer, two size 5 guns on a turret up top, over 160k shield though since it has three size 3 shields, so the thing is an absolute tank. The cargo is very nice too, 292scu on grid with easy to get 400 off grid. The only ships I have issues killing are hammerheads
Another guy said the same thing. Now y'all got me thinkin
Let me give you a negative: Have a look at the unused view space in while piloting. How can CIG miss this critical point?
Lol you're right
do you give access to the spreadsheet mentioned for calculating optimal distances? could use that for my org
I didn't, but I build spreadsheets for a living. Hop in my discord (link in the description). I'll get you set up with one.
When you look at the Taurus, you realize that CIG is not interested in balancing things. To have the Starlancer MAX be that slow and the Taurus still retain it's speed, superior firepower, superior hul hp...it just sucks. According to CIG, the Starlancer MAX is 600i sized, yet it has half the hull hp of the 600i. It even has less hull hp than ships smaller than it. And yeah, the 600i is even faster than the Starlancer MAX. In short, CIG sucks.
Solid points here. Maybe the numbers will make more sense when armor gets fleshed out.
Don't be gay like this guy. Get a real fighter and learn how to actually dogfight. I said what I said. Sorry not sorry.
I got my Starlancer to the hammerhead level and quickly got melted by it. It's still my number one ship, even for combat, despite me owning a Guardian. Good review.
Lol so we had the exact same experience? Thanks for watching! 🫡
HH NPCs are madness now, even combat-focused ships struggle with those.
I had the SMAX since day one and after the honeymoon, I'm pondering a divorce. I still value the rear cargo bay that does not impede vehicle cargo, but where is the value when you already own a Caterpillar or a C2? This ship is too big for what it does (600i size!) and the waste of space that is the upper floor is shamefull including the bloated cockpit. The main cargo grid is less convenient that one may initially think, unable to be loaded by one side only, but rather by three sides and the ship is BIG!!! The TAC will be even more meaningless. I admit that if the Starlancer had an Exploration version, that would be my choice, with large crew quarters suddenly making sense for off grid living and a proper mix of cargo, vehicles and the ability to deploy equipments to the ground on every side. As an Exploration ship I would take it over the 600i, being much more practical and with enough space in the cockpit for a Charting Holotable. As it is, I find myself leaving the SMAX in the garage, driving my Connie 99% of the time. For how old the Connie is, I still think she's the most thought after design ever made by CIG for this game.
Yeah.. those are all fair critiques. I'm holding onto the max to upgrade to the BLD. I also have a TAC that I actually think will have some value because of the shield pool and those size 5 broadside guns (I'm thinking Valakar hunting). I could go without the snub hangar on it though - I'd rather keep the living quarters. But I may be wrong on that. I especially like that the TAC will have med beds.
Wouldn't a Connie Andromeda be a better solo do all ship ?
Sure - I just don't care for the Connies. Its just a taste/preference thing.
Depends what's more important to you, combat or cargo.
I also think it's basically luck if you manage to do an ERT with the Starlancer MAX solo if the AI is not ramming each other to death and actually responding. Even with 2 friends on board, because it's just not tough enough to withstand barrage after barrage of other heavier ships with better SCM speeds. When it comes to slow fights I prefer the Starfarer (Gemini) over the Lancer because it has enough defenses to justify being that slow. I did quite some ERTs with the Gemini and one friend on board, the 2xS5 turret on top is just nice. Anyways; the Starlancer just has an adventurous, comfy feel to it and you can stay in one ship with some friends or alone and do all kinds of not too extreme things with it.
Really? The Gemini? That's actually pretty cool. Part of me wants to buy a Gemini, but it's just so big.
Ravioli or Macaroni??
Los dos
i agree with you all the way i get oneshot servel time in my guardian so armor os useless vs missiles if you get hit the mssions need to be so almost everyone can do them not only the best of the best Pilots
I agree, but the higher tier ones probably shouldn't be soloable
@ tjis is also ageins cutless an other smaller ships they oneshot you with 1 missile you dont really have shielding only armor so no defense at all
@@Trikie77 I'm 90% certain that problem was fixed with 4.0.1. At least it was fixed in the PTU
Nice content as always but the radar absolute sucks on this ship. WTF were they thinking, it’s so bad. It’s supposed to build awareness of your environment and surroundings and you can barely see it.
Lol yeah - it was definitely an afterthought in this scenario where they just figured they should probably do SOMERTHING with that giant dash
@ 😅 I’m sure they will change it one day
@ Lol or not
In a Tesla, you have to be behind the wheel, awake, and attentive. If you fall asleep, the car stops. Likewise, our cruise control, requires that you be in your seat, so your ship doesn't plow into buildings and space stations.
Le sigh.. you're right
In a Tesla you pay a premium for stuff that still doesn't work. The game may be in alpha but it still doesn't deserve to be compared to a scam like Tesla.
I love my Starlancer MAX but not for combat... It is my ship for smuggling drugs and cruise around after a hard day cause it is slow but somehow relaxing
That's fair. It's not my go to for combat. But it does ok
Autopilot was a thing. For whatever reason, they actually took it away.
Someone else in the comments dropped a tip on how you can still get it to work
lemme bless you with a tip. turn off coupled mode turn on gravity comp and then cruise control works when off the seat
#blessed you da best
PS I didn't even know gravity comp did anything at the moment. I really appreciate it.
Great stuff! I bet with a crew member or two, you would have an even better experience! I recently got a redeemer as a loaner, and im really struggling with that on my own 😅 Keep up the good work
Yeah the redeemer is decent solo.. but the AI on these bounties would chew it to pieces at the moment I think.
Very much appreciated this video review of the max, it's just as good and informative as your previous one. I have the SLM as a loaner for the Tac, and your reviews provide me with gameplay loops using the ship that helps me decide if this is the ideal ship for my fleet. Thanks P.S. you're correct about the ships slow speed and terrible landing gear. 😅
Glad it was helpful!
Nicely put
Thanks!
It's a nice ship, just not quite sure I want it over a Taurus...
Ya know.. thats the beauty of the game. Your choice in ship - even if completely subjective - is 100% valid. You've got a good ship if you're flying a Taurus.
Why are you doing bounties with a dedicated cargo ship in the first place
Same reason why people do bounties in a Taurus.
Because I can :) it pretty much explains it in the video. I use the MAX as a "do everything" ship.
This guy gets it
@@ForgeCoreGaming i think you dont get it, we do bounties with taurus because of the s5 turrets, its fast and agile enough, it has decent cargo, doing this with a slow and undergunned solo pilot starlancer is stupide asf
Because the ship is very durable have a insane shield to much dps and insanely turrets at this moment is the BEST multi role ship i always play with a friend, yo much pvpees tried to kill us in hornets f7a and f8c but they cant do nothing the shield have a bug and is Bubble instead quadrant they simply cant destroy us, yes the ship is slow but is more agile than a corsair and all Connie series and have better aim angle for manual gimbal for the pilot compared to the Connie
I still have the Tac pledged, so I still have a SLM as a loaner, but I melted the SLM pledge to get my Taurus back. Not nearly as nice on the inside, but the speed, gas tank and visibility are so much better. Not to mention the pilot S5s.
I get that. I chose the max for the interior. But I understand the preference for performance
The visibility of the Connie series are the worst in the game with that strut just in the center, is something that me and my Friends have been discussed for a while, 30 min piloting that ship and i start to feel unconfortable with my vision, a very disgusting feel
@@ForgeCoreGaming yeah, I do like the interior a lot. It'll be in buyback for me if I decide to give it another go.
@@sergioveraruiz5384aha. Both ships have a problem. You either accept the connie strut or the tiny narrow field of view of the max.
wait for the tac to drop its gonna be really good
Oh I'm locked & loaded
the lack of MFDs in the pilot view kills this ship for me, great for cargo tho
Yeah - that does kinda bug me. But you get used to it after a while
@@ForgeCoreGaming lol sc in a nut shell
Especially since there is so much space that blocks your view that could be used for MFDs.
At the $300 price point, I’d opt for a C1 Spirit over the Cutlass Black, to pair with the Vulture.
So you're more of a cargo hauler? I can respect that.. someone in a cutty black tried to kill me last night in my SL Max.. it did not end well for that fella.
@@ForgeCoreGaming Not really a cargo hauler, just do not care for the Cutty Black. C1 sends out same damage as Black, from what I can see. =)
I think when fully crewed it can be a very decent ship to clear out medium to small ships, since anything that can get be behind you will be met with the same fire power you can dish out frontally. That same turret can be used to keep a target's shields on edge while you reposition for another pass, meaning if you have good energy management it be really good at consistent damage. Even still, since I prefer to fly solo I wish there was a variant that ditched the turret and associated seat for a larger powerplant and/or size 4 mounts. Or even if it were to more closely resemble it's inspiration, a repair turret.
What if it is a size 2 scraper, like on the reclaimer.
I don't think it is though. It has the same size 1 arm and size 2 head as the vulture. Which translates to 2s1 modules attached to it. But idk - anything is subject to change
@@ForgeCoreGaming I am not sure since Erkel has both the vulture and reclaimed at s1 and we know that the reclaimer does it a lot better than the vulture.
@@anothergoogleuser Yeah - at this point, stats are speculative to an extent. We'll have to see. I'd wager it'll be out in the next week or two along with the 4.0.1 patch
It's in the PTU game files, so I imagine they're going for an early February release. The original Heartseeker released for a Valentines sale if I remember correctly. I've been planning to CCU both with store credit, while keeping my Invictus F7C MkI and Ghost MkII. Guess I'll just be the crazy hornet guy.
Nothing wrong with being an enthusiastic. I saw the stats for the heartseeker on Reddit. That is a nasty loadout
@@ForgeCoreGaming I'm an old backer, and the Hornet was the first ship I saw in relation to the project. I hope, though, that they reign in that gun before it goes on sale. We're for sure going to be seeing a lot of supers running around after the sale, because they're just going to be powerful ships, but the Heartseeker as it stands in the files right now is just too much.
@@kentyannayon3741 I 100% agree on that. It has way too much firepower + maneuverability. Most ships won't be able to withstand more than a second or two of incoming fire - and that just isn't balanced.
In this state of the leaks, am I the only crazy one who believes that if they release the F7C-M Super Hornet mkII like this, they would have to improve all the heavy ships (hurricane, scorpius, f8c, vanguard)??
It feels that way. As this out performs them by large margins - which doesn't really make much sense. Good point.
Lowest effort imo, “carbon copy” is spoton. I’m guessing this ship only strips as well? No breaking down of structural materials? Vulture is shaped the way it is for a reason. With how fast we now know they can do smaller ships, def lowest effort possible :/
Yeah - it's a pass in my opinion.
But I'm also passing on pretty much any ship coming out for the foreseeable future.
i dont think this ship really changes the meta but its defenetly a great alternative for those that didnt get the F7A
