Good, comprehensive review.
Thank you.
Will the Canon EF-S 24mm f2.8 STM fit onto a full Frame body like the 5D? I know it's designed for APS-C bodies, but I've read competing views as to whether it will actually fit onto a full frame body, albeit with some vignetting.
Hey! No, it will not fit. The ef-s lenses have an extra little tab that keeps them from fitting on full frame.
@@iamToddNorris Ah I see, thanks for the quick reply, it's much appreciated!
@@TMxtt you are very welcome!

Hey 👋 betohs2121! It depends on what you're going to do with this lens. I use it mostly for video now without any issues.
For me, ive never had the ENTIRE image go soft, but it did severely misplace the focal point in any number of random amounts and directions. my current suspicion is that the Phase detect sensors are picking up on something strange coming from the light the lens is spitting out and occasionally misses the visible light focus
Hey Maverick 👋! You could be on to something. Although I've never had this issue with other lenses. At this point I've just moved on to other lenses for photography and I only use this one for video, which it excels at, without issue.
I have that error only with the visor focus, with the live view focus is good. Someone else have the same problem like me? Did you can solve it?
Hey Hector 👋! I mostly use this lens for video now, which uses live view. I haven't used it for photography in a long time. I never could pin down the problem because it's random.
@@iamToddNorris yes, i guess it's mostly random than a consistent problem. Im gonna try to test it only with the live view and see what happens, Thnx!
Would you recommend this len with canon r10? Is it shap and good quality?
Hey 👋. This is an EF mount lens so you'd need an adapter to use it on an EOS R camera and while I've never used this lens on an mirrorless camera, I would think it would deliver the same, if not better results because of the newer sensor and improved autofocus capabilities of the EOS R cameras. The only negatives I can think of have to deal with the adapter you'd have to use... It adds weight, size and cost. Canon offers a 100-400mm RF lens that would fit your camera and while it's not as bright as this lens, it's zoom range is longer at 400mm. I think you can pick it up for around $600 usd. If that's out of your budget and you already have an adapter then I'd go with this lens. It's a great lens. Hope that answers your questions.
@@iamToddNorris I really appreciate you so much

Thank you.
do you use additional lenses other than 55-250mm? macro close up filter maybe?
Hey suarairham 👋. I only used the 55-250mm. I would zoom in and get as close as I could to meet the minimum focusing distance and lock focus. No filters, no other lenses, no attachments, no macro tubes, just my 80d and the 55-250mm lens.
@@iamToddNorris seriously? but that was awesome!! 😭😭 lemme know if you have tutorial video about this 🙏😅
@@suarairham I don't have one but I'll try to make one.
@@iamToddNorris okay please sir! 🙌😎
@@suarairham not sure how long it will be cause I'm a couple of videos behind as it is. So let me give you the steps you can try right now. 1. Get 6 feet ( 2 meters) from your subject. 2. Zoom in to 250mm. 3. While looking through the viewfinder, start moving slowly towards your subject. With each step, halfway press the shutter button. You should hear a beep letting you know the camera has locked focus. Eventually you'll get too close and the camera will not beep on the half press. That means you've gone past the minimum focusing distance. Back a little away from your subject until you hear the beep again on half press. 4. Frame your shot and take the picture. I used a single point focusing type and I shot these in Av mode (aperture priority) with the aperture wide open. Also make sure you have good light. This lens needs a lot of light for clean images. Hope this helps. 👍
Nice Stranger! Beautiful Pics! Miss you very much! <3
Thanks Roc. Miss U 2. ❤️
Hi, mate! I forgot to ask if those are RAW shots and post processed after? Greetings!
Hey Cosmin Danes 👋! I think these were jpgs. I used little to no processing on these photos. If the photo looked a little washed out, I'd add some contrast using the color curves adjustment to match the other photos in the collection. There's no color adjustments or sharpness or anything else added. I also have a custom color profile in camera I use. It's the standard canon color profile but I back the contrast off 2 clicks. Hope this answers your question.
@@iamToddNorris you're amazing dude!
"Beautiful"
Thank you.
Will it be okay to use this lens with Canon M50 ?
Hey Kishan 👋! Yes but you'll need the ef to ef-m adapter.
I bought this lens for the Eos M50 II to do fitness video. The sharpness is focus is terrible, much worse than a simple iPhone video. I have tried many different settings with AF and still no improvement. Any idea on how I could make it work?
Hey Nicolas👋! Sorry to hear that. There are a couple of things. You could try to close down the aperture to get a deeper depth of field or you could manually focus. The m50 has a setting to turn on called "focus peeking" which will highlight what's in focus when you turn off autofocus and turn the focus ring on the lens. It defaults to a red color but I changed mine to blue because it was easier for me too see. Personally, I've only had focusing issues with this lens in photography. It's always done a pretty good job in video. In your video's are you tracking a moving object like a face or body? Is the camera on a tripod or are both you and the subject moving?
@@iamToddNorris thanks Todd, I normally don't use any zoom but will check the aperture. Everything is on a tripod and I do video of myself about 4m away from the camera and full body so I need to work with AF. I run video in FHD 25fps in neutral picture mode. The sharpness is really bad and blurred especially when I pause the video. I will try to get some help from someone to see how manual focus improve the image. Thanks
@@nauckland OK. Hope you get it sorted out.
@@nauckland Hey Nicolas, just curious, you said the video is really bad when you pause the video... When you scrub the video are any of the frames in focus or are they all out of focus? The reason I ask is because that's what video compression does. When there's movement in a video it takes the frame before it and the current frame and blends them together. This will make a frame look blurry if you pause on it. That's how IPB mp4 compression keeps the file size small. There is an ALL-i compression that doesn't blend frames but it's only on high-end cameras. Another way to get around this is to use a faster frame rate. You can shoot FHD 60 fps if you're in USA or 50 fps if your in UK. You'll still get some blending but it'll be less noticeable when the video is playing. Of course this all depends on if your issue is compression or the lens autofocus. Anyway, hope this helps.
@@iamToddNorris Hi Todd, the all image is out of focus and videos are done in 1080p as the 4K function on the M50 doesn't have AF. I do video myself on a tripod so nobody is being the camera but I tried today taking a video of someone and same results. I tried in 50fps but no improvement. As a need to be about 4m from the camera would a solution be to upgrade to the R50 in order to shoot in 4K with AF? Thanks a lot for your help, really appreciate it
I just ordered the 18-135 stm used in exchange for my 18-55 iii kit lens I mainly want to use it for video since my kit lens has no stabilization , and as a backup to my 50mm 1.8 I paid 120 USD for the exchange . Please tell me I'm doing the right thing and i got a good deal 😅 lol ,thanks , your video is great and made me love it even more
Hey Hazemos 👋. That's a good deal! And yes, the 18-135 will be much better for video! 👍
I use the STM version of this lens on my Canon C100 mk2. Bought used from MPB for £172.00 and I've never regretted buying it. The autofocus and stabilization are great and with the C100 the aperture change whilst zooming is automatically compensated for. Yes you got a good deal.
I have issues on my Canon T7
Hey Ale Salum 👋! Sorry to hear that.
If you can make a boring subject interesting without a macro lens, you are a literal god.
😁
I have question my sigma 18-35 when in manual focus ring is very stiff? Is this is a problem or ordinary?
Hey archel 👋! Mine is too on this lens. I wouldn't say it's difficult to turn but stiff, like you said.
@@iamToddNorris I just saw other user there sigma focus is so smooth while mine is not, thank you
Incredible samples man! what aperture did you use? Image stabilisation ON or OFF? I just bought one but my pictures aren't that sharp
Hey Senzor 👋! Thanks man. Most of these images were shot at 250mm at the widest aperture and at the minimal focusing distance. The image stabilization was turned on. All shots were hand held and there was no wind so no movement. My copy of this lens is very sharp. Hope this answers your questions.
@@iamToddNorris thanks man! Indeed helped! dont u sell it? 😅😂 i got one but my copy isn't that sharp. I was thinking to get another, try my luck
@@jOjOwArR 😂😂 IKR! I got mine refurbished from Canon's website at a good price. www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/refurbished-ef-s-55-250mm-f-4-5-6-is-stm
@@iamToddNorris thanks man! Enjoy your day!
Hello, excuse my English, I hope I make myself understood, the tamron 100-400 lens and the canon 70-300 lens are almost at the same price, which one do you recommend I buy?
Hey YICM! 👋 I've never used the Tamron so I can't recommend or compare but here's a comparison for you to look at: versus.com/en/canon-ef-70-300-f4-5-6-is-ii-usm-vs-tamron-100-400mm-f-4-5-6-3-di-vc-usd
Thank you! I think it will be Canon🤭
Does it always has distortion? For landscape at 15mm for example, will i notice them ? I told you before that i am JPEG fan, really dont know between canon 10-18 and tamron 11-16 . btw you are really nice mate! wish you all the best!
Hey Cosmin! 👋 It doesn't have distortion with curved lines but it has the typical wide lens distortion where everything that comes closer to the lens is stretched on the edges. So if you're standing in the center of the frame and put your hand out to touch the lens, your fingers will look 5 feet long. 😂 As you zoom in it becomes less and less. My biggest problem with this lens is it's aperture. It's very dark. In full sunlight it's not an issue but you won't be shooting a moving subject at sunset.
@@iamToddNorris so like u said in the video, is good for landscape :) you find it sharp to the edges or just sharp? Btw mate i really appreciate your devotion. Have you ever thought to coach 1:1 ? 😂😅 i ll be your first student
@@cosmindanes9435 Thanks man, I appreciate you. But my life's so crazy busy right now I'm behind on my videos. Eventually I'll do some coaching / teaching and yes, the 10-18 is sharp and good for landscapes. 👍
@@iamToddNorris and in landscape is the distortion noticed? Btw, thanks a lot again and i wish you all the best! You so nice ;)
@@cosmindanes9435 with any wide angle lens you're going to have to pay attention to the edge of the frame. If something is closer it's going to get stretched. The further away your subject is, the less dramatic the effect. But you'll definitely notice it when your framing your shot. Just be ware and make the appropriate changes to your composition.
im really between 55-250mm and 70-300mm all read all comments and so on.. but the image quality with the 55-250 from your photos is stunning.. i see it at least 30% better than the 70-300.. btw using IS ON the image quality will decrease? and which has better macro capability? Still fell in love with your 55-250 samples
Hey Cosmin! 👋 The 55-250 is a better walk around lens but the 700-300 is better for wildlife. The 50mm more reach is awesome. When I'm shooting moving birds from the boat (boats rocking and birds moving) I have to keep my shutter speed super fast, thus I have to shoot with the aperture wide open to get more light. When I stop the aperture down a little the 70-300 gets sharper. On a tripod the 70-300 resolves more detail than the 55-250 because I can zoom in closer. When both lenses are zoomed out they have a foot or more of minimum focusing distance. The 55-250 would do better in a macro situation because it's smaller and easier to handle but nether of these lenses are good for macro. Your ef-s 24mm would be better.
@@iamToddNorris so you mean with the aperture stopped down the 70-300 will be sharper than the 55-250 ? That's interesting.. anyway your photos with the 55-250 shocked me , really blew my mind. Honestly i told you i never seen something like that before (and i ve seen so so many lenses reviews / lenses comparison). So really good job mate. Yeah the 24mm is good enough to me.. i thoght 55-250 will do better for some macro because of the zoom range
@@cosmindanes9435 Thanks Cosmin! For what it's worth, almost every shot in that 55-250 video is at the minimum focusing distance and at the end or close to the end of the zoom range. That's why there's a lot of bokeh in those shots. It was also shot in the afternoon so, good light, close up and zoomed in! 😂
Does it perform really much better then the 18-55mm IS STM ? In therms of sharpness/image quality?
Hey Cosmin Danes 👋! The 18-55 is just a tad sharper if you pixel peep... but the 18-135 gives you more reach and little better stabilization. If I was shooting video I'd get the 18-135. For photography I'd choose another lens... Probably the ef 70-300mm. It really depends on what your shooting.
@@iamToddNorris thanks mate, but how can be 18-55mm sharper than the 18-135mm? I heard the opposite, like you said "a tad sharper" but in favour of the 18-135mm. I mostly do landscape where i got my 55-250mm and for portraits i got my 50mm f1.8.. i was thinking at the 18-135mm more as an walk around lens. (For the moment i got my 24mm pancake to do the job)
@@cosmindanes9435 there can be variances in each copy of the lens due to the precision of optical manufacturing, but generally speaking, it has been my experience that lenses with bigger focal ranges have to make sacrifices some where and usually that's in the optical performance. It's just physics. In most cases prime lenses are sharper than zooms. With that said, the difference between these two lenses in regards to sharpness is minimal, especially on the wide end. The 18-135 gets softer and looses some contrast after the 120mm mark but it's minimal. That's been my experience anyway.
@@iamToddNorris thanks for your time and kindness, mate! I really appreciate. I found it very usefull. May i still ask you one last thing?
@@cosmindanes9435 No problem and absolutely. What's up?
Great video. I am in the market for that very same lens, so I am trying to understand the issues beforehand. The fact that live view does not produce the issue makes me hopeful the lens will work fine with mirrorless cameras - they basically operate in live view 100% of the time. Keep up the good work.
Hey Iko Knyphausen 👋! Thank you and yes, you are correct. Also, the last firmware update sigma released for this lens was about its capability with the eos r (mirrorless) .

Hey Ajaz Ahmed 👋. Nice!!
@@iamToddNorris Thanks
Is this the SLR or mirrorless version?
Hey kipling1957 👋. SLR.
when will lens reviewers realize filming themselves using the lens is useless.
Not sure I understand what you're saying. Could you elaborate?
thanks for sharing your video! Beautiful shots! I have a Canon 90D and searching for a lens to take shots of birds and nature. I was thinking about the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens USED one but it is still expensive. I'm a beginner and do you think the EF 70-300mm IS II USM lens as 2023 is a good buy? If I understand the right way, if I buy this lens ( EF 70-300mm IS II USM lens) I will have 1.6 x more zoom, right? thanks in advance.
Hey edgard cafe 👋! And thank you. The crop factor is determined by your camera, not the lens. Since the 90d is a crop sensor camera, any lens you put on it will be x 1.6. So the 100-400mm will be a 160-640mm and the 70-300mm will be a 112-480mm equivalent. The 100-400mm L lens is going to be sharper and have a lot better build quality (weather sealing, lens coatings, metal - not plastic etc...) . It's a pro lens with a pro price. The 70-300mm is a pro-sumer lens. It has more plastic and no weather sealing but the optics are very good and it's lighter and easier to handle. Since you're just starting out I would definitely recommend the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM. It will match your 90d perfectly. If later down the road you decide to go with a full frame camera or you win the lottery, that's when I'd look into 100-400mm L. :) Hope this answers your questions.
@@iamToddNorris wow ! You are amazing! Thank you so much ! You clarify my doubts! Have a wonderful day ! 👍happy Easter 🐣
@@edycafe No, YOU are amazing! 😆 Thank you and I hope you have a great Easter!

January 2023. I just ordered this latest USM version for Canon 90D. It is arriving tomorrow 😃
Hey Sammy 👋! Congratulations!
You have the error! The EF-S designation is for APS-C only. On APS-C it is not the equivalent of 35mm but the real 24mm.
Hey Starej Fotr 👋. I promise, the focal length of the ef-s 24mm is the same as a 38.4mm on a full frame camera. You still have to account for the crop factor. It's the same with micro four third's or medium format lenses too. All lenses focal length designation is based off full frame (35mm) measurements. If you want a true 24mm focal length on a Canon apsc, you'll need to use a 15mm lens. It doesn't matter if it's an ef-s or ef lens. If you search for this lens on bhphoto.com and look at the overview tab, it will list the focal length equivalent. 38.4mm. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment.
How about 6d ? Please help.
Hey Charles 👋. This is an EF-S lens. It will not fit your 6d. You need EF lenses.

Not so on video. I've had this lens for 4 years. I love it I use a speedbooster and just what you said usually at 18 video is not as sharp unless you move close to the subject. This thing really shines with close ups I film weddings so say when I'm filming the ladies getting ready and film close up usually I'm at 24-35 at 1.8-2.8 because I want the background blurred out it's sharp but there's time when things are soft to not focus if the lighting is really low, say in reception and they turn the lights way down. I have the docking station but the person sent me the wrong cable.
Hey Shawn 👋! I've noticed my copy is softer at 35mm. But I don't think it's a focusing issue, just my copy I guess. BTW, what camera are you using with the speedbooster? I've been thinking about getting one for my M50.
@@iamToddNorris I use it on my Panasonic G9
@@shawnLisi OK, thanks.
i love the music in the background what's the name of it
Hey Crayshaun 👋! It's "Frost on Window Pane" by Fey Foxx.
Very helpful. Thank you! I’m using it with a EOS90D. The live view solution works perfect.
Hey JBM 👋! That's awesome and thank you.
This lens With the Canon m50 mark ii is working well? Thanks
Hey Basileos 👋. Yes. I haven't had any issues with any ef-s lenses on my M50. Just make sure you get the right ef-m adapter for ef-s lenses.
Can you recommend this lens for general bird and wildlife photography? Or is it too short for getting nice shots of smaller birds?
Hey 👋! Yes, you could fill the frame with smaller birds using this lens. I've even used the ef-s 55-250 when shooting smaller birds in my back yard. It's all about how close you can get to your subject without disturbing them. Some birds are more skittish than others. Are you using a crop sensor camera or full frame? On a crop sensor this lens is 105-450mm. It allows you to be a good distance away. At 300mm and 25 feet away from the subject, the frame is 1 foot 10 inches wide and 1 foot 3 inches tall. At 50 feet it's 3' 9" x 2' 6". At 10 feet, it's 6 inches x 9 inches. The Photo Pills app I use has a FOV (field of view) calculator. It comes in handy for birding. It's available for both android and iPhone. Hope this helps.
@@iamToddNorris thank you so much for your Quick answer! I'm using an apsc, crop camera (EOS 250D). Im about to buy the Canon EF 70-300mm is usm ii, thats why i asked😉
