  • I run into a new bird at the lake. Using my Canon 80d and the EF 70-300mm IS II USM lens, I capture them in their natural environment.

    We who love photography are very lucky people. We see and appreciate things that other people do not see.

    thanks for sharing your video! Beautiful shots! I have a Canon 90D and searching for a lens to take shots of birds and nature. I was thinking about the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens USED one but it is still expensive. I'm a beginner and do you think the EF 70-300mm IS II USM lens as 2023 is a good buy? If I understand the right way, if I buy this lens ( EF 70-300mm IS II USM lens) I will have 1.6 x more zoom, right? thanks in advance.

      Hey edgard cafe 👋! And thank you. The crop factor is determined by your camera, not the lens. Since the 90d is a crop sensor camera, any lens you put on it will be x 1.6. So the 100-400mm will be a 160-640mm and the 70-300mm will be a 112-480mm equivalent. The 100-400mm L lens is going to be sharper and have a lot better build quality (weather sealing, lens coatings, metal - not plastic etc...) . It's a pro lens with a pro price. The 70-300mm is a pro-sumer lens. It has more plastic and no weather sealing but the optics are very good and it's lighter and easier to handle. Since you're just starting out I would definitely recommend the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM. It will match your 90d perfectly. If later down the road you decide to go with a full frame camera or you win the lottery, that's when I'd look into 100-400mm L. :) Hope this answers your questions.

    Can you recommend this lens for general bird and wildlife photography? Or is it too short for getting nice shots of smaller birds?

    • @iamToddNorris
      @iamToddNorris  2 года назад +2

      Hey 👋! Yes, you could fill the frame with smaller birds using this lens. I've even used the ef-s 55-250 when shooting smaller birds in my back yard. It's all about how close you can get to your subject without disturbing them. Some birds are more skittish than others. Are you using a crop sensor camera or full frame? On a crop sensor this lens is 105-450mm. It allows you to be a good distance away. At 300mm and 25 feet away from the subject, the frame is 1 foot 10 inches wide and 1 foot 3 inches tall. At 50 feet it's 3' 9" x 2' 6". At 10 feet, it's 6 inches x 9 inches. The Photo Pills app I use has a FOV (field of view) calculator. It comes in handy for birding. It's available for both android and iPhone. Hope this helps.

    im really between 55-250mm and 70-300mm all read all comments and so on.. but the image quality with the 55-250 from your photos is stunning.. i see it at least 30% better than the 70-300.. btw using IS ON the image quality will decrease? and which has better macro capability? Still fell in love with your 55-250 samples

      Hey Cosmin! 👋 The 55-250 is a better walk around lens but the 700-300 is better for wildlife. The 50mm more reach is awesome. When I'm shooting moving birds from the boat (boats rocking and birds moving) I have to keep my shutter speed super fast, thus I have to shoot with the aperture wide open to get more light. When I stop the aperture down a little the 70-300 gets sharper. On a tripod the 70-300 resolves more detail than the 55-250 because I can zoom in closer. When both lenses are zoomed out they have a foot or more of minimum focusing distance. The 55-250 would do better in a macro situation because it's smaller and easier to handle but nether of these lenses are good for macro. Your ef-s 24mm would be better.

      @@iamToddNorris so you mean with the aperture stopped down the 70-300 will be sharper than the 55-250 ? That's interesting.. anyway your photos with the 55-250 shocked me , really blew my mind. Honestly i told you i never seen something like that before (and i ve seen so so many lenses reviews / lenses comparison). So really good job mate. Yeah the 24mm is good enough to me.. i thoght 55-250 will do better for some macro because of the zoom range

      @@cosmindanes9435 Thanks Cosmin! For what it's worth, almost every shot in that 55-250 video is at the minimum focusing distance and at the end or close to the end of the zoom range. That's why there's a lot of bokeh in those shots. It was also shot in the afternoon so, good light, close up and zoomed in! 😂
