Little 'boutique' studio built into our home where we have done many projects for many bands and artists over the last 20 years or so. Majority of the sessions are live performance based so appeal to jazz and acoustic acts as we have a grand piano here...though we love rock and punk etc as well.
We are also educators and musicians and run workshops and do sessions etc.

Leslie 145, Hammond M100 and Tokai Goldstar ST50

A rather potent secret weapon in the studio is putting a guitar (1987 Tokai Goldstar with Seymour Duncan pickups here ) through the Leslie 145. Using a simple preamp stage - a microcube in this case to get to line level - direct into the line-in on the Hammond M100 and then the 145. Possibly the most glorious of sounds for guitar.

A nice momento of my time in The Pretty Things. I found an old VHS tape in the attic of a gig at De Lantaarn in Hellendoorn - 17th May 1991. A fan had sent it to me 30 years ago. Completely forgot about it. Finding any footage of the band during this period is extremely rare - so I guess this is kind of historic. I know we were filmed a couple of times, especially a performance on French nation...

Fostex E16 installed for student final year project. Running MTC sync with ProTools chasing. Maintains sync really well - good enough for a 5 minute tune or so so tracks can be recorded to and fro between the platforms. All stock except for a shim on the pickup. Small amount of setting up to get intonation in and it will need the nut lowering a little bit as you can fret a little sharp if you get carried away - but it’s a fun thing and ridiculously affordable. I played an HB SG and I Wasn't impressed. There was something crude and cheesy about it. Maybe the Junior Is better but a warning to anybody thinking about buying these bargain guitars: You get what you pay for.

That sounded excellent. A lovely overall balance of frequencies. Nothing jarring or overly dominant. It did sit in one ear with a slight increase in volume but not really distracting. The mics sounded superb.

Yes, of course the player is important, but so is the instrument being played. As for the recording, I'd say that it's ideal!

Another superb mix. Love the warmth in the low end. I'm guessing the cover on the piano is to create a isolated space for the mics? How did you go about creating that? Also just a mono overhead for the drum kit? For a more simple drum mix I could see that being perfectly usable. Sorry for all the questions haha. I'm really impressed by the recording and mix quality given the home studio environment.
Thank you for the detailed information! I saw that mic next to the floor tom but just figured it was specifically for the floor tom. That's a very interesting technique that I've never seen before. Now listening back to the mix I can hear the stereo image you achieved. Very interesting! Also I hadn't even considered the importance of separating the piano mics from the live vocal performance. I can see how well it works in a situation like this. I've only ever worked with a vocalist isolated from the piano. I'll keep your info in mind if I ever get to work in a similar scenario. Thanks a ton.

Very nice. I picked up a pair for recording percussion and acoustic guitar / mandolin. I love their gentle lift but overall neutral sound. The piano sounds very nice. Which Pres did you use?

Hi. Would like to hear your opinion on this Harley Benton now when you had it for some time.
Its still good! Because its a new instrument, things like neck relief etc will change as seasons change - so there will be a period of settling down for the new wood. Mine will need a fret dress now to sort a slightly proud couple of frets up around 12th etc that restrict getting the action down lower and to be within spec of normal Gibson specs of 1.5mm and 1mm action at 12th - so for a small fee to the guitar tech its a keeper. Only thing I'd recommend is replacing the bridge for a preset lighting type one.
Wish I'd been there with a gin and tonic; fabulous musicians on top form.
The playing is much too beautiful to really judge the microphones ;-)

Hi, its just a cheap generic sdc shock mount - like the T-bone ones: www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_ssm_4.htm This is one of two of the first mics Extinct made that I've been trialing and feeding back on - so the mounts were just a temporary fix till they made their - rather impressive - newer mounts.
I got the cherry red on order fat with the split pickup should be coming this month
