  • A nice momento of my time in The Pretty Things.
I found an old VHS tape in the attic of a gig at De Lantaarn in Hellendoorn - 17th May 1991.
A fan had sent it to me 30 years ago.
    Completely forgot about it.
Finding any footage of the band during this period is extremely rare - so I guess this is kind of historic.
I know we were filmed a couple of times, especially a performance on French national TV in Paris, summer 1993. That one is yet to surface.
I had been in the band for about 6 months by this time - usually doing 5-6 tours a year from 1990 to August 1994 - until a re-emergent management had other ideas.
It irks that management tried to dismiss this period as the "Europop band" - yet here we are; doing the job real good whilst keeping the band name alive, kicking and relevant.
    It rocked.
    Thanks for the acknowledgement chaps...
The band featured the great dutch drummer, Hans Waterman (Cuby & the Blizzards, Jan Akkerman, Solution etc) who does a cracking drum solo in the middle of Mona.
I do feel a little emotional seeing this since Phil May (who I loved dearly) passed away in 2020.
I was living in Leeds with Jon Langford (The Mekons, Waco Brothers) but would drive down and stay over with Phil and his family in Notting Hill before any tour.
Fun fact - Dick introduced me to Jon Langford as he played with the Mekons periodically. I still work with Jon to this day.
It's nice to see a little bit of our tour manager Robbie Acada sitting on my side of the stage and emerging periodically who is also sadly no longer with us. Such a great character.
It was a good band and a very formative period for me.
    Phil May - vox
    Dick Taylor - guitar
    Hans Waterman - drums
    Roelf ter Velt - bass
Barkley McKay - guitar and slide.
