VW Bus 21 Window Restoration episode 9 - drilling spot welds & fabricating external gauge
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
In this episode I spend what feels like my entire life drilling spot welds to remove the inner skin on the passenger side and fabricate an external gauge to start straightening out the bus. Thanks Alex for the face shield, it works great!

Usually when you make one of these the bottom leg you put a T on it and attach it to the other side of the car frame. SO your chain would attach to the right side of the bus front end and to the top of the left side. Better leverage. But it looks like it is working.
Looks like your making an L style frame machine Body shops used to use them all the time.
Nice job? But what happened to the bus? Did you roll it??
Thanks for watching, the bus was in a accident in the 1990s, It rolled over on the driver side. And then got parted out and sat for several years. When I found the bus it was in that unfortunate condition.
So, were you able to get the ring on that way or did you just do without putting it on at all?
Yes, I was able to install it that way.
You guys know how to put on a show. Great tunes, cars and Vdub folks!!! Thoroughly enjoyed every minute! So cool.
Thanks! It was a great time. Thanks for watching!
Salut my friend super car super video subscribe subscribe ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for joining us! Great video - hope to see ya next time 🚌
Thanks!
Thanks for coming out! Awsome video!
Thanks! It was a great show!
Great footage. Thanks for posting!
Thank you!
I found a white deluxe in Dayton Ohio with 6 miles on it in New original condition that was stored in a building since new. The guy wanted $13000.00 I was only 17 and didn't have the cash. Folks told me it was absurdly expensive. This was 1998 l😂
Too bad, somebody ruined it with a spray paint
It’ll buff out. Haha! Nah, I’m just glad they didn’t spray anything on the original gas tank.
Cooles auto wollte ich schon immer al haben
If they all would go back that easy
I wouldn't mind if it was a 1936 VW #1
What are you anchoring from and how much did you need to over correct?
Check out the full length video episode 10
@@centerbayclassics Watching it now. Thanks - I hadn't yet had a chance to crawl your page. :-)
A lot of faith in that drip rail
The drip rail is a multi layered pinch point of the whole roof structure, meaning it's just as solid as the bottom of the rockers. Cheers.
Good to know : Cheers
Not to hard to do on a tin can!
Where did you get the sweet clamp
I found it on eBay
That's amazing how much it moved. #fixed
Show!
VERY ingenious and satisfying! Great work!
Thank you very much!
I really like that side profile template, thats really handy. How did you make it?
Thanks! In episode 9 I show a little bit about it. I used 18 gauge sheet metal, but cardboard would work too.
@@centerbayclassics Ill check out the episode!
Great info! Drilling spot welds is not my favorite part of the hobby either!
Killer job man.
Thanks man!
@@centerbayclassics man my split is much worse than this and I’m enjoying watching your progress. I’m build a ragtop right now but hope to start my business by the end of the year. YT @rustydubbs
Gawd…our neighbors across the street used to have one of these things. We had one of these things. Pretty sure “everyone” used to have one of these. My sisters best friend had a “beetle”. They were all over.
Haha you ain't kidding!
your idea is good but you need to anchor the other side of the bus to get leverage on the side you are pulling some floor anchors would work with chains on the chassis rails 🙂😉
Exactly what I thought. Need to secure the Bus to the floor somehow. Get some mate over to sit in the Bus 🍻
Yes, I agree. I'm trying to avoid drilling into the concrete so I'm going to add weight to the bus first. Plan B will be to anchor to the floor..
I just had to pull my nose structure out of my 68 double cab because of a collision that happened a long time ago (because my new nose wouldn't lay nicely on it). I wish I had a frame like that. Funny enough I have the same clamp.
It seems like it's either rust or collision damage. I picked up this clamp on eBay and it works great!
it's all about content, backed with great camera work framed with editing skills, thxs for sharing...
Thanks so much! Trying to make every video I do better than my last.
😎😎
Thanks dude!
Nice
Thanks!
How cool is that!
I hope you had mask on all the time plus no hands to your mouth...VW used lead to seal the 1/4 panel.
Safety first!
👊🏻⚡️🇺🇸
With chemical you still have to go over it all
Do you ever use chemicals to strip? Or does the surface conditioning tool work better?
I use paint stripper also, especially on large panels and take a slow approach on stripping paint off without hurting the metal. The surface conditioning tool is a great tool but I would use it with caution not to be to aggressive or overheat the metal.
@@centerbayclassics that makes sense, i learned the hard way how important it is to control heat on this thin sheet metal.
Nice work 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks!
Good work. Coming along nicely
Thanks!
Where’d you get it at?
Harbor freight
once you peel away all the support and inner panels that should go right back into place. that pattern might come in handy.....Usually I just use the door top to line that up. you really cant see both sides at the same time. and if it is slightly off it will still look good as long as it lines up with the door frame and door.
plus the other side might be slightly out of square and you cant see that either. I would focus on the door lining up then plumb bob while its siting on a flat surface so you can see if it is square. Within say 1/8 or so top to bottom. any less than that you cant see.
@@Mikefngarage Thanks Mike. I can't wait to get the roof straight and then I can start welding the rear corner on and see it as a complete bus! I hope very soon.
Right on, looking slick man, i have a chopped 50 my self... nothing but smiles for miles
Thanks man! I love my shoebox. They look so good with a chop!
@@centerbayclassics im with you 100% there iconic, especially chopped
HF is absolute chinese garbage!
Bauer… the brand I use when I don’t wanna spend money and also expect the tool to break after the job
Used mine for bug doors. Work good after getting used to it. Eastwood has narrowed drums for there brand. Probably could hack hf brand to do the same for tight spots
Yes, I think I’m going to make a bushing to adapt the narrowed drums.
Does it heat and warp the metal ?
That was a concern of mine, I was worried it was going to be too aggressive so I started on small sections. I have not tried it on a large panel yet, but when I do I’m going to go easy with it and feel the metal as I go.
Damn looks perfect metal ready to go.
Yes, I see myself using this tool a lot!
Looks decent but the question is how long will it last
That’s a good question. Only time will tell.
If you are close to your Hft store, take it back for a replacement if it does young.
Just don't get the medal too hot... Switch panels and let it cool off
Yes, I agree! Great advice.
I saw this last weekend while I was at HF and wondered how well it worked. Definitely looks quicker and cleaner than stripper and sandpaper, but I bet that thing gets annoying real quick with the vibration and sound. Looks like it'd eat through powder coating pretty easily, I wonder what it could do to bedliner and if it would clog
The vibration is not bad, it feels balanced so it’s doesn’t vibrate that much, but it is very loud!
That was a great idea making that template Looking forward to see how you bend that top back
Thanks!
Looks like fun can't wait for more videos !
Thanks, I'm working on the next video now and will have some shorts coming out in between the full length videos.
