It's The Little Things - Episode 85 of Two Guys Talking About Records
On this week's episode, Steve and Jim highlight some of the less obvious things to look for when digging for collectible records. From copyright issues or images considered offensive that call for changes to be made on album covers to misprint graphics or text, the little things could mean big differences in value or collectibility. Jim also has a mini-rant on a recent Discogs update and shows off a glaring quality control problem with a customer purchase.

Scott makes some fantastic comic pictures. Lov them. And I love the podcast thx keep em coming
A new version of a heavy metal pressing! 😂
Interesting details. Lots of special things to look for on vinyl pressings! The Fleetwood Mac original pressing of “Future Games” was a yellow cover. But for a number of years I had the green cover. I finally found a yellow cover out in the wild!
Excellent!
Back when In through the outdoor by Led Zeppelin was released, I went to buy the cassette tape at Rock a Rolla records in Saginaw. I brought it home to listen to and it was NOT Led Zeppelin. The first song should have been In the Evening but it was a hard rocking tune that I really liked very well. I took it back to the record store and the worker listened to it and said that it was ACDC Highway to Hell that was also released that year in 1979. So I exchanged it for In through the outdoor and all was well. About a week or two later when I save up enough money- I purchased the Highway to Hell cassette because I liked it so much....and that was how i first got into ACDC! My only reasoning for the mix up was that both records were on the Atlantic record label so it must have been a mix up at the factory.
I have a first press of the Canadian Velvet Underground. They use the back cover as the front cover. No banana. I guess it would have been too entertaining and inventive for the Canadian psyche.
i also believe the moby grape fixed cover also had had a different color flag (Red to black)
Fun show guys! I’ve never seen you guys together and your personalities complement each other! Of course, unmatched expertise is a big part of it!
I buy music, therefore I am nearly broke
Great show, sir. Thanks.
Fantastic interview Jim. I loved Marks infectious positive attitude. He was really interesting and his love for music is just as strong Great stuff and even some history on musical scales!
Thanks, Steve! He IS a tremendously positive dude, isn't he?
in north swedwn heave the snow come
Sorry I missed you live this morning - stuff going on, but watching now! 🙂
Great to see Mark and that he's doing well and appreciate the patriotism.
A GFR reunion would be so great. I'm glad to see Mark is all in if Don and Mel would agree to do it.
How The West Was Won is the best live Led Zeppelin
giving Song Remains The Same a run for it's money!
I got that back in my collection from Bill Young. It is great
A CD box set! Oh my! 36:10
the music of grand funk and mark's has been part of the soundtrack to my life. thank you!
cool!!
I’m not a huge fan of box sets but I did just get a NM copy of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness for $50. Not bad for four records. I bought the CD but never played it because it is too much. It is still too much but it is more digestible on vinyl.
Wow Richie, only $50 for that Punpkins box set in I’m not a huge fan of that album but for $50 I would have grabbed that!
Wow great interview , thanks for that.
thanks for watching!
I just pre-ordered the LP. I was reading about it and noticed that Jim Peterik also sings on the album. I'm really looking forward to hearing this! I've always liked his voice but I've really been noticing just how great it is/was back in the 1970s and 80s lately. In fact, I had a CD of the first Survivor self-titled album but I had been wanting and got the vinyl virgin delivered today from a Discogs seller. And it was mint condition. I could hear things that I had not really noticed or paid attention to on the CD which I only listened to once or twice since I got it 2 years ago. It sounded fantastic 100 percent analog LP! With Mark, Jim, and the rest of the musicians on this album, I know it's going to be great! Thanks for the interview. I really enjoyed it. The human element in music is what makes music music to me 👍👍 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
cool! thanks for watching!!
Everywhere I see Mark Farmer interviews, I really like his attitude and way of looking at things. He seems to be grounded the right way! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
loved farner and GFR since i was 10 in 1970.
nice! white label NAZZ. i have an OG NAZZ NAZZ on orange vinyl very cool. i bought that war of the worlds thinking it was JEFF LYNNE d,oh!! its not bad. i got into boxes heavy in the 90,s. i had a friend who worked for WEA i was able to get all of my RHINO boxes at cost. that was nice.
90s CD box sets were crazy. I had so many of them, loved them but never listened to them much
One of my favorite bands, they were the first concert I ever seen with wet willie back in 70s
Interesting stuff. I have a few rock boxes but I'm not a fan of live albums or demos, so it's not a huge part of my mania. I can occasionally be seduced into buying a discography or an "era" box of an artist's work (Fleetwood Mac, Robyn Hitchcock). I do have well over a hundred classical boxes. They have to be major labels and pristine (including booklets). I've picked them up for as little as 10 cent (Canadian!). When I was at Jerry's Records in Pittsburgh, I picked up a free box of box sets. Kept the ones that were in pristine shape. Alas, there were no Ozzy Osbourne sets in there.
What, no Ozzy box set in that free box, kind of a rip Darrell. I have a ton of those classical box sets. Periodically I pull one out to enjoy. I like ones with composers that are new to me. The nice thing is they have rarely been played
Jim you missed a great opportunity to talk about albums from Steve's High School days....😂
LOL! 78's?!? (joking!)
Wow now you get to talk with Mark Farner!
Fun session! How do those Sugar pressings sound? I recently picked up Copper Blue & Beaster 2020 clear re and they sound pretty good.
I think they sound really good. Personally I wish they had the original art work but the sound quality is quite good
I graduated in 1983
I do appreciate having young people like you tune in Richard
Nice Biscuit is probably better than Limp Biscuit
at the very least, it's NEWer Biscuit...! 🤣
Good evening, Gentlemen...just for clarification, Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds was released in 1978, for the 40th anniversary of the Welles broadcast - the "Highlights" album was the one issued in 1981 - you had the full original version on the show this week, and it's a great album...hokey? Maybe to some, but not to me...I've always loved it. Now, onto the box sets - FOUR HUNDRED BUCKS for a box set of Weezer's first album? YIKES! Generally, I stick to CD box sets, and generally it's album collections, although I do have a couple of the early box sets from Carpenters and Chicago, neither one of which are still in print as they were. I'd like to find the Neil Sedaka box set released in the mid-90s, as it's the only place you can get several of his tracks. I bought a deluxe version of Alphaville's "Forever Young" a couple years back with vinyl, CD, and DVD. And I did do both of the War sets on RSD over the past couple of years because I didn't have the albums, but for the most part, I don't bother, unless there's a chance to get a full library of albums on CD, which I've done for both Stacy Lattisaw and Chesney Hawkes (stop laughing, LOL). But I'd probably do or have done a box set like that if it came from one of my absolute favorite acts - Carpenters (have the original "From The Top" box set from the late 1980s), Def Leppard (have one of those, but not all of them), Hanson (bought the "Anthem" deluxe CD set), Lukas Graham, Dadi Freyr, Three Dog Night, and one or two others. More power to those that have the bucks to do it, and those who enjoy them, but they're usually out of my price range - I'm not even doing the new Abba "50 Years" set because of the price. I do wish I still had the original WB-issued "Superstars of the 70s" set from 1973, that was the first box set I ever got, and loved it...long gone, unfortunately. Sorry this turned into a book, hope you both have a great week, and Steve...there's this wonderful thing called a spreadsheet...use one to keep track of your ordering...LOL....
Thanks for the clarificaion on the War of the Worlds. Hokey may not be the right word.. but still cool. Does that count as Prog Rock?!? (although I'm partial to the Orson Welles broadcast. - I have a couple different copies of that) and wow! quite the selection of box sets! as always, thanks for watching!!
Believe it or not I think I have that Superstars box set, it came into Jim’s store. It was fairly inexpensive. I need to check it out. TC, I’m a sucker for a box set but I have backed way off of them. Price is getting a little crazy. That said I just bought 2 from Jim. I still try to support his store as much as possible.
Keep it sealed Steve and stream it take the money
I wasn’t a big country fan. But Johnny Cash got me to open my ears and eyes. I was able to listen to Waylon Jennings and George Jones. Still not the biggest fan, but I try a few albums here and there. Oh, I got that Hendrix cover from an OG German pressing. It’s not just a UK pressing.
Michael, Cash got me into Country also. I am now dabbling with some Waylon but most of my country has been focused around the Bakersfield sound.
Rush... I had to laugh, visited the Radiowasteland Store for first time and of course Rush was playing
Lmao that is hilarious. Jim loves his Rush, he keeps working on me
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 yes I told him I listened to your weekly videos and it was appropriate that Rush was playing.
Thanks guys, enjoyed the show.
Hi guys, great video as per usual.
Peter, always wonderful to hear from you and always appreciate your support
Great show as always, gentlemen, but I have to cut and paste from my comment on Steve's video from last Thursday...."Hi My Name Is Steve, and I'm a vinylholic..." The first sign of a problem, Professor, is blaming others for your inability to control your vinyl habit...." LOL! As far as the gateway albums, I think my biggest of them was probably "Caverna Magica" by Andreas Vollenweider - before that came out, I had no idea what "new age" music was, and now I have hundreds of albums and CDs which are all incredible. Vollenweider has been a favorite for years, as has Craig Chaquico...did "Influencers" episodes about both of them. And Menudo let me to discover Latin music, although I had first been exposed by Mocedades' "Eres Tu" in 1974 - I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I have tons of albums in Spanish, also French and Japanese....lots of Menudo, Luis Miguel, and others in my library these days. And the less said about my obsession with Eurovision, the better, heh heh....Thanks for the great discussion!
I really love Latino music also TC. I think that it was Los Lobos that get me interested in that music. I have a fairly substantial Latin inspired collection but most of it centers around punk and psych.
...saw ya point at Crimson's Beat! 🐘 Next Sunday!
have fun!!!
i thought the cantrell album was very good, not so much for MC5, i thought sponges 1994 cover album was good especially mazzy stars "fade into you"
Nice halloween releases. I can't beleive the evil dead got their own soundtrack pressing!
...well... it is an "unofficial"...
@@RadioWastelandRecords evil dead 2 is on spotify I noticed. Im a nerd that can actually listen to horror movie soundtracks. I got the fog 40th anniversary double LP and listen to it occasionally.
@@paulstevens2839 - very cool!!
Wasn't the soundtrack used in Night Of The Living Dead actually lifted from the movie The Brain That Wouldn't Die? I had heard long ago that the college aged George Romero couldn't afford to have an original soundtrack recorded for the movie so they found a film whose copyright had expired and used that to save money.
hmm.. hadn't heard that... would probably mean it's easier to bootleg as well! Side note: that's kind of ironic, because Romero then went to goof up the copyright to the film itself. It essentially entered the public domain shortly after release. (factiod from my old Professor days)
This was great guys, thanks! I’ve been looking for my Monkees 45 of Stepping Stone b/w I’m A Believer. It was the first record I ever bought as a little girl, and I wanted to bring it to Beatlefest Chicago for Mickey to sign (yes, he often is a guest there!), but I cannot find it. And it had a great picture sleeve too 😢. Do you have one, Jim?
If I had one I would give it to you but again I will fail you , I try to be consistent lol. Maybe Jim does does
i love that dreams album. found it in a cut out bin for 1.99 way back when. ( yes im flexing )...
45,s were great as a kid in he 70,s. usually sold for .99 cents. i had a cool little collection. i have a couple of boxes of some neat-o stuff ,punk and new wave from 70,s+ 80,s. i never play them, too lazy to flip ,em 🙃
Couldn’t agree more. I would take my tip money from my paper route and go by some 45s. It was all stuff from 70s AM radio, pure gold.
David Wilcox is actually Canadian. I think I've purchased 20 or so singles over the years. That said, I probably have 1,500 to 2,000 in the collection. They've all been given to me. Some with picture covers. I was also given 75 Japanese pop 45's - all with picture sleeves and in mint condition. I occasionally have a day where I'll throw on some singles but it is a rarity. It's made more rare because the 45 converter for my Klaudio cleaning system is almost impossible to use.
Darrell, do you sit on a street corner with a sign asking for vinyl? You get an incredible amount of free albums and 45s. Blows me away. People just keep delivering you the goods.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I'd prefer envelopes stuffed full of cash but it is definitely a very nice second-best.
Thanks for the shoutout, Steve! And you are correct - while 45s are my jam, it's because I'm a chart-centric person - for me, I would only purchase albums if I thought i'd listen to them, otherwise, it was the hit singles for me. Now, that's changed somewhat, although if 7" were still available for the popular songs, I'd probably gravitate towards them. And Dawn makes it very easy with her 45 sales on Whatnot, LOL! But I think my love for the format (probably close to 5K of them now, don't know for sure) is because of my love for chart hits and chart stats. Great show as always, gentlemen! And Jim, when you want to weed out your 45 storeroom, feel free to email me anytime, LOL!
Over 5K 45s. I can’t even see how you can keep track of it but then I had over 12,000 albums and CDs at one time. You are the chart man!
Who doesn’t love a BOC quote. Cheers
lol Bobby, they are very quotable
I would buy that Queen News of the World lp cover w/ inserts.
David, that was soooo darn cool wasn’t it
head to our website and drop me an email.. I'll let you know what we decide to do with it.! thanks! - Jim radiowastelandrecords.com/
@@RadioWastelandRecords Hi would appreciate it. I'm a Queen collector and I never saw that one before. Would like to add that to my collection thanks.
Hi Guys I collected 45s in the 1990s and listen to them and made mixtapes using them! Fun times! Trish
Trish, you are the queen of mix tapes. I use to do that when I was younger also!
