- This week, Steve and Jim venture into the sometimes confusing category of Progressive Rock. While noting there are many different branches and sub-genres, the 2 Guys highlight some of the Prog titles in their collections and try to determine whether or not other albums fit under that umbrella. They also cover recent pickups, including Jim's review of the New Billy Strings album "Highway Prayers".

Jim, Take the brilliant nine-minute "La Villa Strangiato" (subtitled "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence") which was the first instrumental that Rush recorded, and has 12 distinct sections. The piece is what Lifeson described as a "musical re-creation" of the various nightmares he had, particularly while he was on tour. It was the sole piece that developed from the two-week rehearsal period the group had prior to entering the studio. The band encountered great difficulty in recording it as they wanted it put down as a single live performance, rather than a more produced and edited piece. Lee said it took as many as 40 takes to produce one that they were satisfied with, and he and Peart pointed out that they spent more time recording "La Villa Strangiato" than their second album, Fly by Night. Peart recalled the group spent four days and nights playing it repeatedly, playing even when tired and with sore hands: "We were determined to get the whole thing perfect, but in the end I just couldn't do it, and we ended up putting it together from a few different takes.
Wow Michael, that was some interesting info that I have no idea about. With your guitar talents it makes sense you love of those Rush guitars
Great insight, Michael! and even with all that effort in the studio, they still held true to their pledge to only create music they could also play live.. quite the feat considering!!
Wiki: Progressive rock (shortened as prog rock or simply prog) is a broad genre of rock music that primarily developed in the United Kingdom through the mid- to late 1960s, peaking in the early 1970s.
Reddit: The main characteristic of progressive music will still be experimentation. Any artist that tries to go beyond conventions of pop can be considered progressive.That can be done in many ways, mostly :
* Complex song structures. Either by straying away from the standard verse/chorus sequence or by implementing experimental sections/musical motifs that vary throughout the song (or even throughout the album).
* Playing with time signatures and key changes.
* Incorporating foreign instruments.
* Improvisation.
anything by neal morse!!
So Michael , does this make you prog as you really experiment with your guitar playing on your albums
What about Strawbs (Hero and Heroine, Ghosts)
Gentle Giant (The Power and the Glory)
Argent?(Circus)
There are so many examples
I use to have Gentle Giant Octopus that someone sent me. I actually quite liked that album I have seen Strawbs albums but I have never tried them, at least not yet
Soooo many bands!!
