Roki Sasaki vs. Paul Skenes? - Talking Yakyu with Shawn Spradling
Great job Chinese Taipei! Japan fought hard and it only took one loss to give them silver.
There must definitely be some American scouts watching this channel.
Such a great story. I saw the BayStars beat Yomiuri in Yokohama last year. The atmosphere was incredible. I became a BayStars fan that night. This is an incredible result! Great job. Go BayStars!
Him and Munetaka Murakami will post in 2025 and be future Dodgers. Book it.
He didn't play enough games a season to play as a mlb starting pitcher regularly physically I don't think he will stay healthy unless he fills out physically.
I can only hope he doesn't go to the Dodgers. I hope he picks either the Padres or the Cubs.
is the lottery part rigged though?
no? that's why there's literally a draft dodgers that refuse to report to any team that select them in the lottery except the one they want to play with back then.
Fuck!
If he develops well, he could be the next 3000 hitter or maybe the 1st 500HR hitter from Asia. I think Shohei could have 3000 hits and 500 Homers if he went with his original plan to bypass the NPB and go straight to the Majors. Maybe he never throws a single pitch, like the higher ups at Hokkaido NHF warned him about, but he could definitely play RF and have a successful career nonetheless and he probably doesn’t have to miss a lot of games due to TJ surgery.
This one deserves a more deep dive. Didn't know that Hiroshima Carp went to a historic collapse out of the wildcard then the series... I bet this one going to be an hour of deep dive especially coming off from having Japanese fans seeing Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto won the World Series before the final game of Japan Series.
Just found your channel and loving the videos I've watched. Wondering are you going to do a draft review like you did last year? Keep it up man!
This longtime fan of baseball EVERYWHERE says: "Thanks so much for a well done video." I've been wanting to attend a Japanese baseball game since the early 80's.
コントロールがあれば佐々木朗希になれた男
In japan they name their teams after corporations instead of their region?
Yep, since the teams is basically funded by the corporations. To put into perspective, MLB team is a franchise while NPB team is funded by a franchise.
In an just world, Ohtani Sasaki Yamamoto ect stay in Japan and it's American baseball stars coming to Japan to play Baseball. Because Japan is the true baseball country now (more than the US) and has the best baseball market with the best fans (Again Americans pefer Padded Rugby more than Baseball now). But, The world isn't fair. Money rules everything. And the Americans have the money.
Marines GM is totally sucked. Professional baseball is nothing but business. They have made catastrophic damage to NPB imo. In addition, current posting system had already been made valid when Sasaki was picked. So he understood it and didn’t take a risk like Hyun-seok Jung who joined LAD farming system right after high school. That’s why some NPB fans don’t celebrate Sasaki’s departure.
Munetaka Murakami ???????????? Roki Sasaki???????
Imma be real with you, I almost would rather see him on the Red Sox than on the Dodgers at this point. I don't want the Dodgers to become a club version of the Japanese national team. I'm still excited that Sasaki is finally coming to MLB, even with all the weird circumstances, but I don't want the Dodgers to just snap up the best players in Japan before anyone else even has a chance to negotiate
All MLB teams have the opportunity to pitch their team and why it makes sense for him to join them. It’s not the Dodgers fault they invest in their teams and try to win for their fans. We should want all owners to follow the same model. I don’t blame the Dodgers or Roki or any other player for wanting to excel in their sport and compete for championships every year. That means a ton to competitive minded athletes.
I don't think Sasaki is giving up that much money by going to MLB early. After he accrues 3 years of MLB service at minimum wage, he'll be eligible for arbitration and many teams will sign players to long term contracts year 4+ buying out their arbitration years. So if he waited to leave NPB after 25 years old, he would get his big contract just one year earlier and everything is health contingent anyways.
One Nippon series as the Taiyo Whales, one Nippon Series as the Yokohama Baystars, one Nippon Series as the Yokohama DeNA Baystars.
Honestly, as a dodger fan who will likely land sasaki, this is kinda unfortunate for japanese fans. I feel like posting this early is unfair.
If Ohtani didn’t post early, he may have never gotten the chance to pitch and bat in the MLB. I’m sure a lot of Japanese fans are excited to have a Japanese team in the MLB; perhaps the MLB should play some games in Japan so they still get to see in person.
Chiba fan here, its annoying for Roki Sasaki to leave us this early, but I recognise that he really wants to head to the majors.
Are there any NPB fantasy baseball leagues out there?
Thank you for the great content. All I've heard so far about the news are negative reactions. However, yours offered a different take and more an in-depth look to the goings behind the scenes. Now, speaking as a Padres fan, do you think Sasaki's relationship with Darvish will help with the negotiation? Also, does the recently pulled offer from the overage Dominican prospect help the Padres in offering a higher deal. Thank you so much again!
I think this will make changes in npb (hopefully) like a compensation draft pick
IPO
Those that are saying he's selfish will also be the first ones cheering for him when he gets his first start as the #3 or #4 starter for the Dodgers behind Ohtani, Yamamoto and maybe Glasnow. Oh, he's not a Dodger yet. Just a matter of time.⏰
Jim's report feels rather forced given the date he signed was 11/30/2019, which is relatively normal for any rookie that is drafted in the late October draft. The team and player have all the way until the end of next March to come to an agreement. For Ohtani's case, his negotiations lasted until December, and he only signed the contract on December 25th, after multiple meetings with the team where they brought various presentation documents showing why he should start his career with Nippon Ham. Roki had never voiced his desire to directly go to the majors unlike Ohtani before the draft, and there were never any reports saying that Roki had used the leverage of MLB org's offers during the initial negotiations. Where I suspect some sort of clause was added is during last offseason where he didn't renew his contract until late January, right before spring training, which is extremely rare in NPB. It is rumored that his mom set up a sporting management company partnering with Dentsu - a notorious marketing agency, and I wouldn't be surprised if that party representing Roki did some very fishy business to force Lotte's hands. Crazy speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if Lotte is getting some under the table money from Dentsu to expediate the posting process, given Dentsu would make so much more representing Sasaki as a young MLB star. Could also be the case of Dentsu holding some sort of connection with Lotte's sponsors and threatening from that end. Either way it is pretty obvious Lotte was coerced into this, so something needs to be done on the NPB level to never let this happen again.
The writing's on the wall. Remember when he immediately asked to be posted after Yamamoto found a team?
HGH does wonders
I thought he had a 0% chance of going to MLB. Now I Just hope he signs with the Padres.
Why would he sign with the padres? They don't know how to win 😂😂😂😂
@@Hehehehhehehehehehehehhe78Maybe because of that? Japanese aren't like Americans. To bring glory to a contending team that hasn't won before is very Samurai in spirit. Also Yu Darvish is revered in Japan too. It isn't just Ohtani and Yamamoto.
@@HoshizakiYoshimasa Yu is loved by Japan, but for Roki to be able to get mentored by arguably the most successful pitcher to come out of japan aka yamamoto and arguably the greatest MLB player ever aka shohei who also pitches, i would give roki big props to reject that when they meet in meetings
I'm all about the conspiracy theory that dentsu's shadowy influence is somewhat at play here
why goliath vs goliath? goliath lost the fight lol.
I haven’t seen betting odds, but I imagine that you might as well not bet on anyone else but the Dodgers. I called it last year: when Ohtani signed with the Dodgers, they became the NPB player’s favored team. No NPB player will go anywhere else in MLB now. They’ll all go to LA to bask in Ohtani’s glory.
Part of the problem with npb talent increasing and being showcased on the world stage is MLB teams are understanding how good npb players are.
Major league player come from around the world. It has always been that way, nothing new 🤡
He will be missed in Chiba. Thanks for covering NPB all this year!
As far as I know, a Japanese-born player who goes straight to MLB to play baseball cannot immediately join NPB once they retire from or leave MLB as per NPB rule.
Tazawa rule was abolished in 2020. They still have to participate in NPB draft and can't sign with any NPB team freely.
I pray he chooses the Jays, he could be our #1 for years to come and have all of Canada with him
He doesn’t want to play there because of Trudeau…🤮
@@ArmorofGod610Exactly. I don't get why MLB expanded to Canada. Canada should had it's own unique pro baseball league anyway. That way, more Canada cities (Edmonton Ottawa ect ect ect) would have professional baseball teams instead of having.... nothing. Japan Korea and Taiwan don't share a league
Sad day for baseball all around. NPB is a proud league and shouldn’t just become a feeder league for the Dodgers specifically. I as a Yankees fan have little room to be upset at Dodgers but man if you are a fan of every other team how can you feel as though things are fair? Or that your team has a legit shot to win anything at all? Sad for those fans. Sad for Japan and Chiba Lotte
Maybe it's time for both leagues to reassess the current setup - the posting system for the NPB and maybe salary cap or other incentives to get the other owners to spend to create a more equal playing field (MLB).
For East coast teams, the real answer is to cultivate talent in Europe. Baseball is a world sport like soccer. There are electricians in the Czech Republic that dream of playing in the MLB. Jankee fans need to stop the whining. Dominican Republic - enough said.
@@nyhtfall5260 I agree! The Czech players have developed a connection with NPB, ironically thanks to Sasaki accidentally hitting a player with his fastball during the last WBC and apologizing in person. One player from the team has recently been drafted by Yomiuri Giants.
@@nyhtfall5260 Whining? There’s little room to be upset as a NYY fan. However The facts are the facts and having Ohtani and Sasaki on a deferred contract and a rookie contract respectively is an advantage that hurts every team in MLB not named the Dodgers. Fans who can’t see that are blinded by ignorance. This is different than the Yankees flexing financial might in the 90s or early 2000s. 80% of the league doesn’t spend money and instead thrives off of revenue sharing with no intentions of ever competing for a championship. That’s a fundamentally flawed system and one that a salary cap could easily rectify. If you are fan of baseball and the health of the sport this posting is a massive step back
LAD worked hard for this golden route since Nomo. This is a dodgers 20yrs of work.
Surprised you didn't dive into the sponsorship aspects
His sponsorship is not really up there
@@raz1683it will get up when he comes over
Why did the owner make this decision even though it was not profitable for Lotte?
There's a rift between the Players Association and NPB over free agency. It may be to ease up any ill feelings. If they don't, it may promote more ill feelings.
It was though. Lotte definitely profited and they made it to the playoffs. Its better than not taking him and him going to another team, or losing your draft pick
The value of the salary being tied as a percentage to the fee the team gets still confuses me TBH. Buffaloes got a nice fee, but if Yamamoto is worth 300 million, they should have got even more. Both the players contract and the fee for the contract should be on the table for negotiation like in Soccer/Football.
Orix will use Yamamoto as a example for young Japanese players with mlb aspirations, plus use the money to improve the team
Sad for NPB fans, but it is exciting to see how he does against MLB hitters full time.
I wonder how he'll do
Do you remember him mentioning an interest in going to the MLB early in his career though? I vaguely recall seeing an interview from his first or second year in the NPB, where he was asked about playing abroad in the future. He seemed uncertain about whether he could handle the cultural differences and didn’t really express a strong intention at that time.
ドジャースになりたい…is what he said.
@@ArmorofGod610 When exactly did he say that? It sounds unnatural to native Japanese speakers.
@@ArmorofGod610 i cant tell if youre trolling or not lmfao
He should have waited until he was 25. Now he wont be able to make real money in MLB until he turns 29 because MLB players need 6 years before they can become Free Agents.
He can still make decent money through arbitration and endorsements.
Maybe he was in a no-win situation. There are no guarantees even if he waits out the next two years with the risk of injury lowering his value here. I know the Marines seem to be getting nothing in return, but who knows what'll be in the final contract. And I have been wondering about the future of baseball in Japan and Korea with the summers getting hotter and hotter. The summers here aren't as bad (so far), and maybe he'll be able to perform better and minimize injuries. There are so many variables. I applaud his challenge and wish him all the best. Hopefully he'll be the first Asian to win the Cy Young!
@@stortacus he can't go thru arbitration until he's 26 since rookie contracts are for a minimum of 3 years. If he gets posted before January 15th, 2025, his signing bonus will be miniscule since most teams have already spent their International bonus pool. The Dodgers currently have the largest with $2.5 million. If the Marines post Roki after Jan 15th, Roki can get up to a $7.5 million signing bonus.
@@jykim3604 depending on what part of the US, the summers are much hotter and more humid than in Japan. All of the east coast in the US is really humid with the South East being really humid and hot. The South West where the Dodgers and Padres play isn't as humid but it gets much hotter than Japan. For the past few years in Los Angeles, August is 100+ (38) degrees for basically the whole month.
after 3 years MLB players enter arbitration and teams will sign players to long term contracts buying out those year 4 - 6 arbitration years. so he's not really giving up that much money since he would be paid much less in NPB the next two years if he stayed.
I still don't know how to feel about this move, it just feels like the only reason he was posted now was simply because the Dodgers won the world series and it feels inevitable that he will join that team... it also makes NPB look like a minor league farming system to most as well and that makes me sick to my core. But in the end I know that I will hope that the talent Sasaki has will translate well overseas.
I think the WS win was the main reason for sasaki wanting to post immediately. If he waited 2-3 years he would get a massive contract but the team decides where he goes based off of value. Due to the posting rules, he gets the control of where he goes. Yamamoto and buffaloes wanted to go to dodgers due to the amount of TV and Japanese sponsorship money
Why don’t you try being happy for the player? This is a huge opportunity for this young talent to face the best in the world…
I understand bro, I think his problem was he hasn't pitched a full season yet in the NPB. I am happy for the guy sure, he is challenging new grounds, but I feel like he is getting to hasty, this just maybe me but yeah, I do hope there is a good reason to it.
How do u get footage of these games
he's Japanese
