Amazing scenery abounds and we enjoy changing it up a little bit by sailing on a larger keelboat. sailing well into the night we gain experience in the dark waters and make memories with one of our oldest sailing friends. we are looking forward to next years Pearl Island race.

We take our trailer sailer to Montana for some beautiful sailing, camping, and wildlife viewing. One of the most beautiful areas we have been to and the road trip to get there was stunning. Flathead lake is by far the largest natural lake in our area so it was fun to see and explore all around the islands.

We finally finish our traveler project after months of work. This video shows the steps taken to produce a recessed traveler on a boat that was designed with a bridle mainsheet setup originally. It is a huge upgrade allowing us to trim sails better than ever before!

We cut some major holes to install a traveller in a small sailboat that never had one to begin with. It is a daunting project but we make good progress and look forward to testing our new gear on future adventures!!!!!
Building a custom sun shade
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Instead of a boom tent or Bimini top we design and build a custom sun shade for the Ruddy Duck. Using Sunbrella and fiberglass poles we construct a cover that is installed quickly and provides shelter from sun and rain. This is our first prototype and we are exited to give it a full test in all conditions Imaginable in various locations from here on out. nelsonfamilycanvas?igsh=Mj...
Here comes the BOOM!
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Год назад
Does the length of the boom or mainsail foot length matter? We discuss why it matters on the Ruddy Duck and how a boat is balanced by multiple factors. We also test out a shorter boom on the water to see the effects first hand.
A cold overnight trip on Lake Coeur d Alene

My son and I take our trailerable sailboat to lake Coeur d' Alene for an early winter overnight trip. The temperatures drop but it doesn't stop us from sailing, hiking, and watching a ton of bald eagles.
Why trailer sailors should have Synthetic Rigging
Просмотров 23 тыс.Год назад
We discuss the benefits of synthetic rigging on a trailerable sailboat. I show how my rig was made and how to make your own. I'm not a great speaker but I do what I can at the request of viewers to explain my dyneema rigging and show how to make a locked Brummell splice.

Really enjoy watching your content. Such beautiful land and water to explore and your trips are an inspiration to get out and enjoy!
I’m glad you enjoy it. It truly is an amazing world we are in !!
Unfortunat for you guys to be caught up in those moments without wind during a race, but dang, those moments were some serious epic shots!!! Very tranquil to watch esp nearing sunset. Good stuff!!
Thank you . It was definitely slow for a long time but beautiful.
Nice video! Fun journey!
Thank you!
Have you ever been to the Ruddy Duck restaurants? Both just inside the Chesapeake Bay.
I’ve never heard of them but I might have to make a special trip if I head that way! Great sailing there also I assume
What a beautiful journey. It was a snail-pace race on the lake but thanks to the breeze, you had plenty of time to admire the sunset and the stars in the sky. A great day!
Yes it was!! Great day to be on the water
Lovely boat!
It truly is.
Beautiful footage / deep contrasts enlightening the scene! I wish I was right there with you -
Thanks! That morning was amazing with the sunrise and other boats close by. Very fun to film
Looked like you had great wind for a while, it's all about the adventure. Was it this fall? great video! Thanks for sharing
Thank you!! Yes the wind in the morning was perfect topping out at 18 knots and allowing us to cover a good distance. It took place mid October of this year
Man, that was such an awesome time and your footage was great! Can’t wait to do it again! Maybe next year I’ll take the Compac.
Been looking for a small sailboat for years now. Like what you are doing. Some of these lakes and rivers can get pretty dangerous when the weather turns.
It’s been a lot of fun adventuring in our little boats. I’m very thankful we got into sailing. And yes our lake Pendoreille especially can get rough fast with not many places to escape. Have to be careful!
I like the araingment of your jib sheet. I've recently bought a Cherry16 that I'm fixing up and I'll see how it sails but i think the sheeting will need adjustment so I might try your idea🏴☠
I think it would work good on that boat. I just made sure to pay attention to the sheeting angle so when I placed the low friction ring I had plenty of adjustment to flatten the sail or give it twist. Let me know how it goes if you try it.
@ruddyducksailing Thanks yes I will 🏴☠️
Another GREAT video ! Been to Whiskey Rock several times. Every summer I would take a week to 10 days and just stay on the lake on my Clipper 27. Sailing Lake Pend Oreille those few years and being the Bonner County Marine deputy summer of 77 I did get to know the lake pretty good.
Thank you!! Definitely a great spot. Gets kinda busy towards the weekends but is quiet otherwise. Great fishing and hiking nearby also. A 10 day boat trip sounds amazing!!!!
Maybe I missed it BUT I never saw any comment on having a JACK LINE. ALWAYS ALWAYS have a life jacket and connect to your jack line if you need to go on deck. For your jack line use a like a 1" flat nylon line. that way it will NOT roll when you step on it. Really enjoy your sailing videos. I did sail Lake Pend Oreille for about 4 years. 1 of my favorite places was WHISKEY ROCK BAY during the week. To busy on week ends
A jack line would be a good idea on the compac 19. It would give security when single handed. I also drag a floating line on my smaller boats in case I fall off . I’ve practiced this maneuver with a friend at the helm and jumped off the boat. Since the boats are light and not super powerful it is easy to hang on and get back to the boat and back onboard due to low freeboard. A larger boat would probably drag me all over though
Thx for posting this. Want to do this sorry of things with my grandson. He's 6 and will be so inspired by these kids.
I highly recommend it. We had such a great time and made lifelong memories!
Would have been nice to see the sleeping accommodations in your tiny vessel. I will check your other videos to see if there is a tour of the inside.
Yeah there’s short clips here and there of the inside but I’ve never really given a tour. It’s very basic. There’s a small footwell that allows almost sitting headroom and v berth style bunks that are good sized accommodating two adults. That’s it, no electronics, or anything else really. Just a little storage under the bunks
Awesome video and adventure!
Thanks! Can’t wait for some more summer cruises next year
Please keep creating these beautiful videos! Thanks to your videos I'm currently in the process of buying my own small trailer sailer. I'm really looking forward to create unforgettable adventures alone and with loved ones.
I will try to continue to film our adventures! We have been crazy busy with life but I’m longing for another trip. I’m stoked that you have been inspired to start your own adventures and may you have fair winds and wonderful experiences.
Say, 4:30 - 10:20ish, how the f do you even know how to even begin to know how to begin to even know how to do any of that?
Ha ha, yeah it’s not something I came up with for sure. I learned most of my splicing techniques from a book by Samson ropes that shows step by step instructions for making just about any kind of splice in any of their lines. There’s also a few other instructional videos on RUclips.
I watched this with the kids again tonight reliving the joy of the suymmer. This was the premier trip[ of the whole year!!! Cant wait to do it again next year!!
I’m stoked for more trips!! We will have to get out this winter to curb the withdrawals
those boats ar relly cool, here in Finland season is only 4-5 months. would be great to live there and camping around lake area. so beuatiful nature we have here, just lakes, lakes, lakes 350 km
Thank you. I imagine a lot of the lakes in Finland freeze in the winter as they do here. Luckily some of our larger lakes don’t freeze so we can sail year round in temperatures well below freezing. Thank you for watching and replying from your beautiful country !
I like a long boom, so its easier to find some other used sails, if there is enough room at the boom. my boat had 23 square meters of sail, now it has 28, thats quite a difference and i can go down to 9 now with my sails. so a longer boom and a little bit longer mast give you some space to play with other sails, but dont over do it 1-2 foot is a lot.
That’s a great point! Having extra boom out the back doesn’t hurt much and adds versatility. A taller mast would be cool also. Thanks for sharing
wow so neat!!
Thanks for watching! 😊
I dont know why, but I never got a notification for this one.
That’s strange. Maybe that’s a reason the video is slow to gain traction. I’m glad you found it and thanks for watching!!
Amazing how much of a differance a foot or two can make in a sailboat.
Makes a huge difference! My 16 has so much more room and comfort than the 15. It’s crazy how a foot or two is noticeable on large keelboats also
..little disappointed..thought this was gonna turn out like Deliverance...
That’s funny 😆
Awesome ✨ Loved the steak dinner ending 👌
Thank you!!!😊
That was really relaxing to watch, great images, brave boat !!!!
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It was one of my favorite trips!!
Trues sailors from fresh waters! Sorry from my English...😂
Yes we love exploring our freshwater lakes. Hopefully Someday we will see some saltwater on the coast
I'm thinking about heading up there from Missoula area this weekend. The forecast for wind and waves look fair. I may just daysail out of big arm. Thanks for the video and motivation to get out there and do the thing.
Big arm was a great day sailing location!! I really enjoyed getting into Montana to sail and can’t wait to check out other lakes. Have an amazing trip!
I’m pushing 60 and no sail experience but I was in the Navy.I just never sailed a sailboat. Not sure if I should get a used potter15 but that’s what I would want because I live in a small 183 acre lake.Maybe I can learn how to sail or just troll around. But I’d have to leave it covered outside and I don’t know if it would damage it bad+ I’m not acquainted with what to look for as far as damage maintance or fixing. If I can pick up one for a good price I might. You got a nice looking boat there.
Yeah it’s a great boat to learn on and would be fun on a small lake. There’s a lot to learn about sailing and boats ( a lifetime worth) but I found the best way is to jump in if you find a good deal and start figuring it out. I found the process to be enjoyable.
Your videos inspired me to purchase a 18' Sanibel. My son is 15 and we plan on excursions this coming summer. Picking up the boat next week. Hopefully some fall sailing yet this year. Thanks for your excellent videos!
That’s awesome!!! Congratulations on the new boat and we hope you guys are able to make many fond memories on sailing excursions next year. Have fun dialing in the boat and Fair winds!!
Wonderful video! I have the same outboard on my Siren 17 and love it. Not even one malfonction in 5 years.
They are definitely reliable! How do you like the siren? They seem like good boats
@@ruddyducksailing We love her. Huge cockpit, large sail area (swift acceleration but must reef early in high wind), not as lested as your Newport 16 (only 130 lbs keel). Perfect for our needs. Have her for 9 years until now (about 400 outings).
Awesome! That’s a lot of outings and it sounds like the boat has taken good care of you! Fair winds
I love that kind of racing!
Me too . It’s very peaceful
Awesome!👋
Thanks! 😁
Wondering if you could provide a link for all the the terminal ends and frictionless rings that you used? Also where did you find the cheapest location for your dynema line?
I do not recall where I purchased the hardware but most likely from Fisheries supply in Seattle or west marine. Some terminals may need to be purchased directly from colligo
Waaaw, such a beautiful country you live in Nice trip, thank you for sharing
Thank you!! There’s definitely some beautiful areas. Thanks for watching
I just recently stayed on that same beach .. a little further than the scene at 9:03 I actually got cell service… seemed to be limited to a 20 foot area but my wife was glad to get a safety update after a few days out of range…. Love that area !
It’s definitely a beautiful area with great beaches. I’m really surprised you found service out there. It’s good to know there’s a spot in case of an emergency.
Next time you go.. reach out I might could take the c dory as a support vessel 😂
Definitely. I was debating a late fall or winter trip to the southern islands but not sure yet.
Sorry I missed you! Next time.
Yeah we were thinking of dropping in at Dayton but ran out of time. You have a beautiful place to sail my friend!!!! If you plan a seige next year I may be able to bring a few guys along!
@@ruddyducksailing Wild Horse is scheduled for August 23rd and 24th :) And the first Flathead 40, Dayton to Lakeside and back is July 18th-20th.
You're filling a much-needed gap in the trailer sailing niche as well as openkng my eyes to a widespread potential of what Pacific Northwest sailing can be. I hope to share anchorage with you sometime with one of my trailer sailers located in Oregon City, OR. my 1969 Newport 16 or my 1995 Hunter 23.5.
Thank you! Yeah there is a ton of potential for sailing adventures in our area. Since I’ve started looking satellite imagery and maps for places that would be fun to sail I’ve realized the options are almost endless. The hard/ fun part is figuring out logistics like where to launch, stay, local laws etc. I’ll be heading to Oregon at some point so maybe I’ll see you around!
Great video Brian… such great storytelling
Thanks Jeff I appreciate that!! Are there any more sailboats in your future?
@@ruddyducksailing ... Who knows, I just bought a c dory 22 , to a large extent because like you mentioned in your video I wanted to explore more places.
Awesome!! Cool boat.
LOVE IT !!! And I did install a tiller AUTO PILOT on my boat. WONDERFUL !! then I could go below for a few minutes and make a sandwich or what ever. WORKED GREAT!!
That is awesome! I may have to install one someday.
I have been watching your videos.. MAKES ME so home sick for Bonner county when I had my 27ft retractable sloop on Pend Oreille. BEFORE I went blue water. I had 4 acres and lived on the Cocolalla lake rd. In MY fatasies to move back to the North west and NEAR Flathead lake. In Florida now and NO boat !!
Oh man it might be a good time to pick up a little trailer sailer!! They are so simple, inexpensive and fun and we have really enjoyed the time on ours. We never made it to blue water but definitely downsized from what we started on. Anyways I agree and think it would be awesome to live near Flathead lake as it’s not overcrowded yet and has so much potential for outdoor activities! Thanks for watching!!
@@ruddyducksailing I have been looking for a Small piece of land within about 15 miles of Kalispell. Kalispell has a VA clinic and I am VN disabled veteran. BUT the prices have gone up so much NO way I can do it.. UNLESS I was luck enough to hit a BIG lottery.. You know Back in 1972 I was a single 1st class petty officer in the U S Navy. My parents lived in Clark Fork. I went to visit and ended up buying 40 acres up where Flume creek goes into Rapid lightning creek. I ONLY PAID 5000 DOLLARS for that 40 acres.. NO where in there USA could that be done today.. ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS..
Mate amazing shots, for real. Which cam are you using?
Thank you!! I mainly use my iPhone 14 pro. It has insane quality for its size and is simple allowing me to film more and fidget less. I also use a go pro hero 9 and a mavic mini drone. I also have external mics and gimbals for the phone that help out with certain shots. Thanks for watching!!!
@@ruddyducksailing thank u!
It was worth the wait for this video. Sort of. Your videos are really a first class addiction for sailors of modest means and a yearning to explore. Every one of your videos awakens that yen to go sailing, camping, sight seeing, and the occasional boat full of Kokanee. Concluding each video finds every viewer anxiously waiting your next one. How about say, 3 new releases per week like Matt's Offroad Recovery? A Ruddy Duck fix is absolutely a must-have for sailors stuck in the Pacific Northwest in the summertime. Thank you!
Thank you so much and oh man trust me I wanted to do a trip sooner than this . I’ve been crazy busy lately running my business and keeping a marina afloat ( literally lol) plus farming and just life. Im trying to find a balance to where I can film more but that means I have to work less and hopefully in the future this is feasible. Filming and editing takes so much time but it’s so worth it because of the experience and the awesome community of people like you!!! Having positive comments like yours makes my day! I hope to get to a episode every week as soon as i figure out how to supplement my income but until then thank you for watching!!!!!!🙂
Great channel. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Another excellent video! Thanks for taking us along on your adventure! Your content keeps getting better and better! God bless you and your family ❤.
Thank you so much!! It’s our pleasure. God bless!
Wow. I just purchased a 16' trailer sailor with the intention of sailing the inland lakes of US, which I have wanted to for quite awhile. This looks beautiful. Already making a list..as I'm used to the Great Lakes & East Coast. Any suggestions for a book/forum/? Texas 200 is also on my list for fun, although I prefer wilderness. Thank you & Be well.
Awesome! We have had so much fun exploring in our little sailboat and hope you will as well. We have started by exploring the lakes closest to us and are slowly branching out. I don’t know of any books or forums but I’m sure there are some good ones out there. Thanks for watching and fair winds!!!
What an amazingly massive and beautiful country you live in! Another brilliant vid, cheers
It really is massive and has such a beautiful variety in geography. Too much for me to explore in one lifetime. Thanks for watching!!
Another great Episode. You have a good eye for framing; the footage is excellent.
Thank you! It’s been fun trying share all aspects of our travels and do justice to the beauty around us! Definitely a challenge
Lovelly
Thanks 😊
