i think your boy will be very happy with his new boat ,looks like its been looked after or refurbished , great little boats will be good to see it on the water in future videos
Welcome to the Potter family! Potter 19 here, just got in new sails!!!! look forward to you working on your boats I always learn something! Thanks for another great video!
Thank you. We’ve been looking for the right boat for awhile now and we’re happy with this one. Needs work but what boat doesn’t. And enjoy those crispy new sails! Definitely the best improvement anyone can do to their sailboat.
Nice find, great looking little boat. Love those little potters. My buddy had the same vintage hms 18 in yellow it had sunbrella blue accent colors, and it was a nice-looking combo yellow and blue.
Thanks. Yeah they are neat little boats with interesting lines. I’ve wanted one for awhile and just had to wait for the right deal. Yellow and blue would look nice and keep the vintage vibe that we want.
I am toying with selling my Sovereign and either building a scamp or getting a Potter 15.....still lots of thinking haha. The yellow and sun brella blue look really nice together....I think I have a pic somewhere. There was a blue strip on the hull and blue covers over the cockpit rails. I told my buddy he needed a new sunbrella blue sail cover his was yellow.
I’m definitely a fan of the yellow with black accents look. I think black sail, tiller and companionway covers would look sharp. And then I could throw on some carbon fiber racing sails to finish the look but that would be silly on a potter. Also if you had the time a scamp build would be very cool. They are starting to be quite popular and it must be for a good reason.
Yeah we can show the interior sometime. It’s really nothing special, there is a centerboard trunk , a compression post and cushions. Enough room for two people to sleep barely.
Great little boat! Discovered your channel a couple months ago. I’m also in N Idaho and am finishing up building my sailboat I started a number of years ago. Hope to run into you on the water sometime!
Very cool. Building a boat is an adventure in itself and a very satisfying undertaking. We built a ozona pram a few years back and enjoyed it. Definitely hope to see you on the water also, we’ll be around!
Chris, yes on the bigger lakes here people definitely monitor the vhf and it’s a great safety tool. The sherif marine boats, fishermen, marinas, the navy ( at Pendoreille) and virtually every sailboat will monitor channel 16 and respond in a emergency.
Very cool. The Newport is a great first boat and I think I like mine better than the potter . However they are Both great boats and it’s hard to beat the salty look of a wwp 15
I’m pushing 60 and no sail experience but I was in the Navy.I just never sailed a sailboat. Not sure if I should get a used potter15 but that’s what I would want because I live in a small 183 acre lake.Maybe I can learn how to sail or just troll around. But I’d have to leave it covered outside and I don’t know if it would damage it bad+ I’m not acquainted with what to look for as far as damage maintance or fixing. If I can pick up one for a good price I might. You got a nice looking boat there.
Yeah it’s a great boat to learn on and would be fun on a small lake. There’s a lot to learn about sailing and boats ( a lifetime worth) but I found the best way is to jump in if you find a good deal and start figuring it out. I found the process to be enjoyable.
I have a 1977 WWP 15, hull #711. I'm interested in your plexiglass entryway. I just made a wooden stock recreation for mine but they don't last more than a few years. Thanks for sharing and look forward to more.
Cool! I think the companionway is one of the weaknesses of the wwp 15. I like the plexiglass doors on mine and how they operate but they are old and need to be replaced. I might make the bottom section solid wood and build doors similar to what I have now. I like the fixed doors over removable boards because you don’t have to find a place to store them in such a small space
The gusty conditions reminded me to ask you how your 2.5hp does pushing you neptune/newport into the wind in rough conditions. I just bought a Siren 17 and am trying to decide between 2 and 4 hp for camp cruising in the North Channel.
So on the potter video we were running upwind on 1/4 throttle in 15 knot winds doing around 3 kts speed over ground. On the Newport we have gone upwind in 25+ kts doing around 2 kts speed over ground at 3/4 throttle. I assume we would be standing still at around 35 knots and full throttle
There are no provisions for water ballast so there is no way to add weight while underway. They are very stable boats however and now that I’ve had time to sail more I feel confident up to 20 knots with a reef in the main.
Yeah I still remember when my buddy introduced my wife and I to sailing 6 years ago in heavy winds. We buried the rails and rounded up a few times and it was a blast. When my wife wasn’t worried was the moment I knew I would own a sailboat someday. lol
You have my boat's sister! I am waiting for my new sails from Really Simple Sails. I will contact u when I come up there this summer. BTW do you have 140 pounds of rusty metal punchings used as ballast forward of your centerboard? I did. It was in a rotted cardboard box that had been glassed in place. I have clean lead there now.
Yeah this boat had a lot of extra ballast. Someone put six 3”x 3’ pvc tubes filled with concrete next to the trunk. We took those out and found the decaying punchings that must’ve been a factory ballast job. We’re halfway through cleaning that rusty mess up and will probably replace with lead. What lead source did you use?
@@ruddyducksailing I used wheel weights painstakingly melted and made into ingots. I happened to have made some years ago and had just enough for the job. I replaced my rudder with a ruddercraft rudder, made beefy new gudgeons (because the new rudder needed them) put in new acrylic port lights, rerigged for lines led aft, made boom end main sheet like yours, replaced all access panels, made wood core fiberglass wash boards, fiberglass galley box, and ordered my sails from Michael Storer in the Philippines. So yeah my 1979 boat is almost new now.
@@ruddyducksailing Oh not too far from me. I'm near Lake Tahoe on the Nevada Side. And I've always wanted a little cruiser for that and other lakes here. I did a lot of sailing in my younger years. Competed on the west coast in much larger boats. My dad owned a 55ft Yawl and I sailed that for some years until he sold it. I could have killed him for that. LOL... New sub from your shorts by the way. Will keep watching.
Hi I’m a new subscriber. Found your channel whilst trying to find as much information about my boat and hopefully clarification on what model I have a west wight potter I think is a 14 but not too sure it has a vintage seagull motor. If there’s any way I can email you so I can try and get some information on my boat. I was given the boat by a friend and want to use it 👌 thanks from the uk 🇬🇧
That’s awesome! You may have an original potter from the isle. They were originally made of plywood and 14 feet long. My email is ruddyducksailing@gmail.com . I am not an expert on the potters but I know a little bit
They are not too hard to find. Finding one in great shape with a nice trailer is harder. I tend to go for the cheaper project boats but there are a lot of nice p-15s for around $4500 on Craigslist or facebook marketplace
I would like to know what the dowel like piece is attached to the he rudder and the tiller. I have been researching ways/modifications with which to raise and lower the lower half of the WW P 15. What is on yours looks like a solution.
Yeah it was built by a previous owner and it definitely worked but it was kinda bulky and cumbersome. I removed it because I’m rebuilding the rudder and I think I’m going to use lines and clam cleats instead. I’ll share in a video sometime what I come up with !
What a fabulous little cruiser. Pretty windy too. Fair winds and sunny adventures 👍
Thanks. It’s a fun little boat with lots of character. Fair winds!
i think your boy will be very happy with his new boat ,looks like its been looked after or refurbished , great little boats will be good to see it on the water in future videos
Yeah I think some previous owners definitely took pride in it. It should be a good vessel for adventure and exploration

I noticed you carry a vhs radio on board. Do you find people monitor the radio in our Spokane (ish) lakes in case of an emergency?

I rewatched cause I am a sucker for small boats and noticed the mast and boom are black.....looks good on that potter.

@@ruddyducksailing look for a catamaran the same yellow as your new potter :)
I want a little potter so bad. The last one I found slipped away before I could grab it. Excited to see one added to your fleet. Cheers friend!
We had been looking for a potter for awhile and lucked out . Definitely a fun little boat so I would encourage you to keep hunting. Cheers!
Update! I am the proud new owner of a West Wight Potter 15!!! I need to replace just about everything on the boat but I’m so excited for the project.
Congratulations!!!!
Nice boat!! Have fun!!
Thanks! Will do!

Oh man! What a cool boat. Love to see a Potter at our August Messabout.
It’s a fun little cruiser. I definitely want to travel more this year and might end up heading your way
@@ruddyducksailing You are more then welcome!! Be happy to show you and yours around my neck of the woods.

@@ruddyducksailing not bad! Is that a four stroke?
Yes. Water cooled Yamaha new in 2023. Really like that outboard. A 4 horse with a more aggressive prop would work great also
Nice boats. Are you able to add balast if it gets windy?
There are no provisions for water ballast so there is no way to add weight while underway. They are very stable boats however and now that I’ve had time to sail more I feel confident up to 20 knots with a reef in the main.
The potters are cool pocket boats i wish i was still into sailing but i have no doubt the first time it heeled my wife would freak.

Definitely.
That little sail boat of yours really goes. I can't wait to see how it sails with the Jib up too. May I ask where in the world you are?
I’m excited to fly full sails also. I think it will be well balanced and cruise at a decent speed . We are located in North Idaho USA.

Yeah it’s been pretty fun. Probably a rhetorical question about what’s in my mouth but I’ll answer anyways, a toothpick. Cheers
I see you have the affliction as well. So sorry. There is no cure.
😂 yeah it’s taken ahold of me. I thought the cure was more boats in the driveway, lol
