Military Bottom Line - Jason Burds
США
Добавлен 1 окт 2019
Hey RUclips!
My name is Jason Burds. I spent 4 years as an active duty Marine, got out to attend college while staying in the IMA for 4 years. After graduating, I got hired to get a commission and fly in the Air National Guard where I was for 2 years.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to continue towards that dream of military aviation. However, after 10 years of involvement in the military, I have learned a lot about military programs, VA benefits and the struggles of transitioning out of the military. I have left the military by choice and also not by choice and there are unique difficulties to both.
I believe the military is a great opportunity to set yourself up for success from a young age. On this channel I share my lessons to my younger self (or people in my younger self's shoes) in hopes that my mistakes can be avoided by others.
Use your time in the military and the benefits you earn wisely and strategically.

Mark Burnett - Chemical Casualties (Ep. 93)
Mark Burnett’s father was stationed at camp Lejeune back in 1957. As Mark put it, he was conceived in-utero and born in Camp Lejeune. His family stayed there for two more years. Before moving the cherry point, but that did not get him away from the contamination.
After his diagnosis, Mark spent months sifting through thousands of pages of old news papers to identify as many people as he could who may have been impacted by Camp Lejeune's contaminated water.
In this episode, we discuss Mark's story, details of Camp Lejeune's water contamination and the ongoing litigation with details on how you can get involved.

I transferred my entire Post-911 GI Bill to my daughter. She obtained her BS in only three years and she's currently using my last year of eligibility at vet school. When the GI Bill is exhausted, would she be eligible for VR&E? It seems, from your explanation, VR&E is only for veterans. Thank you.
Correct. VR&E cannot be transferred.
Thank you for sharing this! I've been watching your channel for a couple of weeks now. Good stuff. Do you know if you still receive a subsistence allowance if you get into school through the VR&E? If so, would you be able to use BAH rate instead (considering you are GI Bill eligible and never used it prior to VR&E) ?
What if you're part time online? How much BAH would you get?
So basic and A school doesnt count for active duty time for reservist?
I don’t know about other states, but in California, you can sign up with the state vocational rehab program in conjunction with the VA’s Ch. 31
wow awesome video man, VRE is taking a long time to get approve rn, but I will request a set up similar to yours once mine gets approve. Did you get to choose the exact chair and desk that you want? Or how did that went?
It was me bruh 2220th in the house 89 days bruh
Wut?
I got nothing… even after investing during the 80s… nothing.
Hello, I just found your channel mainly because I am starting up a similar channel, after 22 years, multiple deployments, and finally forced to retire due to injuries. If you could give me any advice I would greatly appreciate it. If it is okay with you, several of your videos I would like to do a reaction to them. I understand I can just do it, but out of respect I just like to ask. The name of my channel will be called Military Life Unlocked.
Hey Joe, That's fine with me. Just include me as a reference when reaction - good or bad. I appreciate you asking. Let's connect. militarybottomline@gmail.com
Im currently at AIT for 68A as RA in a 6yr contract, my school is a year long, and im realizing that i no longer want to be active, is there a way i can switch to Reserves early?
Look into palace chasing
am i able to get full benefits for my gi bills if i am thinking of going to reserve or IMA ?
Sure. As long as you don't take active orders while using the GI bill. You can't receive double BAH.
What mos ?
Any
You need to expunge all other benefits such as GI Bill, before Hazlewood can be utilized. Also the GI bill is only forever for those who’s service ended after January 1, 2013
Say you use it for a associates Degree , would you be able to use it in another State and get your 3rd Year somewhere else at another time ?
Absolutely. This is a very normal thing to do.
What if a veteran past before transferring the GI Bill to their children. What can be done to fix that issue?
I'm not aware of anything. They may not have been eligible to transfer the benefits. I'd look for other benefits for children of veterans, service members, deceased veterans/service members. I don't know of any way to make you eligible for the GI bill.
I'm 100%P&T and VRE approved. I respectfully requested an ergonomic desk setup (Architecture program), and got shot down saying they "don't provide furniture" and to take it up with my health care provider. I sent a reply email asking for clarification since M28R does state that I may be entitled to ergonomic equipment, and I requested a copy of the documents used to make these determinations so that I may better advocate for myself. Aaand now I wait... she takes her full three business days to reply to every single email.
update?
@@TutStore I'm still going back and forth with her. She shot me down a second time, BUT then asked for a copy of my syllabus saying that she may be able to consider it. I replied with a detailed explanation of why an ergonomic desk/chair setup would mitigate my service connected disabilities (in detail), along with links and prices of the specific equipment I am requesting. Now we wait for a reply.
Update 2: I sent a follow-up email to my reply because I still have not heard back.
I use my GI Bill I still had to take 18k in student loans
I'm sorry to hear that. I'd be curious to hear the details, but sounds like user error.
@@jasonburds No one of the schools I went to was very expensive and the g I bill had a cap
I need a va id card
I am a Texas resident for 8 years now however did not join out of Texas. I am also 100% P&T, this however will not qualify me correct?
I have a Vhic but doesn’t say “Service related” is because I have not received a rating yet?
Important note: Entry level training does count for individuals with 24 months active duty. Once a reservist hits 24 months qualifying active time they can count their “entry level and skill training”. CFR Title 38, Chapter 1, Part 21, Subpart P, § 21.9640
THANKS!
I was curious on the benefits… I’m a 25B doing 5 years active… do I keep tri care? What benefits do I keep? And what changes?
recently got separated for medical reasons but i was in for less than 2 years so it says i don’t match the criteria for honorable or dishonorable am i still eligible.
there was also the cycle with ssgt brock and sgt bromery which i heard was extreme
why does video say posted 3 years ago
That's when it was uploaded. Still true in 2024 though.
Do I need to get this if I have a card for being "retired"
Negative. Your current card is superior.
@@jasonburds Thanks, Brother
Hey what is bills email I need to talk with him on how he did his farm
Send me an email and I'll connect you militarybottomline@gmail.com
Didn’t the VA change the rule on having to take the majority of the classes in person in order to get full housing allowance? The way the VA had the BAH rate is dumb, imagine the VA really thinking people are stealing and or stealing from living at home but going to a school in an expensive area, that’s crazy

👀 🤤🤤🤤
No take all the loans you can put i. I. The sp 500 nets 10 percent return year over year 40 percent return by the time your done 4 years
Student loans are like 7%. You're gonna take all that risk for a 3% margin? I'll pass.
Is there any information on while candidates are in the q course, where are they living throughout the entirety of the course? Are they staying in barracks? Rental homes/apartments?
What if you went Merchant Marine (USN TRANSCOM), because the agency I worked for abandonded me after getting the director of safety fired through legal, and earned the GWOT medal?
I transferred my post 9/11 GI Bill to my daughter. She has completed two years at an in-state public university. Now they’re saying the money ran out. Does that sound right to you?
Amazing - I didn't know that VR&E could basically act as the GI Bill. For those considering joining the Military - I'd say, do it, survive it, and if you're young - after 4 or 5 years, the rest of your life will be infinitely better.
1000% percent agree!
I’m a new resident to Texas and I’m a veteran who is originally from Nebraska but I’m curious to if I would be able to receive the benefit? I served honorably for 6 years any help would be greatly appreciated
Awesome interview!! Do I have to have gone rhe active duty route to do IMA? I’m currently a civilian and weighing options between going active duty or going straight to reserves.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. You can go traditional reserves into the IMA, but you cannot go from the street straight into the IMA. An obligatory contract is required to get to IMA. Does that make sense?
Okay, got it! Thanks Jason!
I passed my Full Post 911 Gi Bill to my Daughter. She will most likely get close to a 100% Athletic scholarship. What sthe best way to use the GI bill with an Athletic Scholarship? Cant find any info. I used T/A while I was on active duty.. Best descision I ever made.
Awesome! Congrats! Does she have any interest in graduate school? Does she have any siblings that can use it? It may be worth using some of it despite the scholarship just to get the stipend.
@@jasonburds she is still in High School so not married and no kids. She has no interest in Grad School but is seeking an Athletic Trainer or Physical Therapy Degree
Thank you for the information man i have my appointment h Upcoming soon
Right on! Good luck!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Let's go!
Great video thanks!
You bet!
Can you do a follow-up video with this guy? I'd be super interested in seeing how it went for him.
If you choose to use your GI Bill benefits, do you have to opt out of your Guard education Assistance program?
Why would you have to do that? They're separate programs from what I understand.
It's like Washington state where schools gives you 50% off just for veteran status. I still haven't used my GI bill yet.
Yep. There's a good number of states that have good deals like that. What are you saving the GI Bill for?
@@jasonburds Just in case if I want to get a Masters Degree
If you're a Texas resident and you use up your G.I. Bill the state of Texas pays for the rest of your degree through the Hazelwood Act
What happens to the remaining third year of GI benefit if I use the GI Bill for a two-year MBA?
It goes unused. As long as you have the forever GI Bill (got out after 2013), you'll be able to use it whenever you want later in life. I still have 35 months available.
Thank you. That means once I use two years of GI Bill for an MBA, if I decide to get another master’s, I will be paid for the remaining one year both for tuition and monthly BAH right?
Can one use the GI Bill to go to grad school like Harvard or Stanford for an MBA?
1000% you can use it for grad school, medical school etc.
You can use this for flight lessons towards getting your ATP license to become a pilot in addition to $15k per year they cover for the lessons after your Private License.
Do you have personal experience with this? Would love chat.
Not too much, but my buddy is waiting to get his VR&E approved and I also spoke with a program that broke it down to me. Yeah man it would be awesome to chat!
Do you see a pretty serious situation on the horizon im just about to join but have some concerns bout getting stopped loss slapped on me and prolonging my professional goals right after my “4 year contract”.
War is always possible, but so is the draft. Don't let that be the reason not to join. Just be strategic in the branch you join and the job you take. It's a wild adventure and can set you up very well.
Thanks man, really appreciate the channel and the great insight!
