A correction: the movie 'Eternal Summer' from 2006 is not a Chinese product, but Taiwanese, from The Democratic Republic of Taiwan. Has nothing to do with the Communist China, where the movie would probably be both censored, if not even publicly banned.

I am a newbie to Cdramas! So happy to discover your channel and reviews! You guys are very entertaining as well. Love that you are east- west here, giving better perspectives on Winter Begonia which i am just now watching. I love the aesthetics of the opera singers, the beautiful outfits of the rich Chinese women of the era, and nuanced gay love! ❤️ i have to re-watch Farewell My Concubine…its been many years.

I feel most of the plots were left for audiences imagination. In that way, I can see the point of therapist in the storyline, all other discussed topics. I don't like to be spoon-fed everything. So I don't agree with the views of both of you, which is fine.

One of the most beautiful series I have ever seen, with the most stunning actors imaginable in exquisite locations. The degree to which the same-sex relationship between the principal protagonists is explored is remarkable, coming from China, where same-sex relationships between LGBT+ people are practically outlawed, regarded as grossly indecent, and are socially a death sentence. I hope that this series will gradually change the negative attitudes towards LGBT+ people that predominate in China, and allow the 70 million such people living in that country to escape lives of misery at the hands of their own countrymen they currently have to endure from birth to death.

Birdie got hurt when he crashed Chang Jia-Han's motorcycle. The smaller gay guy was not a part of the love affair. He was just an example of how gays who were out were bullied very badly. The excuse the main protagonist gave for breaking up with his other three friends was because he was demoted in school from the top group down to Birdie's group. It was one of those friends though who told him Birdie was at his house after their fight. Whether tired of the suffering or not that is the whole point of the movie - to show the reality and brutality and angst that comes from condemning people for being gay. And it is not over. In some Arab and African countries and Russia it can still be a death sentence. Nevertheless Birdie's character added some very funny moments. You show an interest in history and I was informed by it. Thanks. But you should know we who are old want to educate about our history too. I went to a state university in the early '60's and even though my state had decriminalized gay behavior between consenting adults, students would still be expelled if the administration found out they were gay. One graduate student was caught in a gay bath house far away but he still was fired and his name and home address were published in the paper. I loved the music. The marching and singing were great even though the officer judged the song to be insufficiently bellicose. The young protagonists were great actors and much better looking than in many gay movies. They were not only very masculine looking but in great physical shape with beautiful eyes, hair and lips. The ocean view was worth the price of admission in itself. I thought the ending in Canada was too long and quite lame. They had traveled independently all those miles and unbelievably "coincidentally" met. Yet they didn't even seem to want to spend some time reminiscing together. If that's all the final scenes amounted to, just shorten the movie and instead have them make a final phone call showing how the grew old without ever meeting again.

I am not Chinese and loved the drama, so Much better 9/10 than recent American plotless films/dramas. I don’t get why you were so confused. After the first episode it’s just straightforward. And the acting of main leads are really good.

Call Me By Your Name tried to add politics to the film too. It just didn't work. A strong understanding of Chinese alphabet and text messaging helps understand the plot in ways that western audiences might not. I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the homage to Happy Together, the waterfall.

All three main characters were Chinese men that left their homes to get away from something, probably that they are all gay. To me the idea of being Chinese and closeted is very significant. I like your comment about growth, but in my opinion Chang was part of that growth, that it feels good when someone respects you and treats you kindly. We get a brief glimpse of Chang's mom right? And also the owner of the restaurant in Argentina was a woman. Did she appear twice?

Ang Lee’s first three movies in his career are about a traditional Chinese father in the modern world, which later were called “the trilogy of Chinese father”. He used the same actor to play the father’s role in all the three movies. Wedding Banquet is the second one of this trilogy.

Just watched the movie today. And I believe Shane isn't straight. No "straight" dude would go do the deed with another dude. But what I think is that his love for Jonathan goes beyond friendship and even romance. He needs Jonathan just as much as we need oxygen. And I believe this story is just the beginning of a more beautiful story for both these guys.

Shane's body language and physical touch says it all. It is hard for a seemingly straight guy to admit he is in love with another guy. And i dont think a truly straight guy would have sex with another guy. The mere thougt of it would cause them to cringe their faces. Shane could be bisexual but the confusion is just too much for him to accept. It's no different from a guy loving 2 girls, he needs to choose just one

its not Chinese movie...it's direct and produced by Taiwan film maker, I watch Eternal Summer and Dear Ex too, but this movie always have special place in my heart, because it based on real life story/experience and surprisingly in some Asians country where same sex relationship is still taboo, many men who already watch this movie said that they have the same experience when they were young, feel somekind of love to their male bestie but they cannot express that feeling because the supression of community, years later they meet again and realize about their true feeling but because they are already marriage and living their own life, they kept this matter as a secret, but love does remain in their heart, for me this movie represent mostly about asian gay or bi in 80s -90s, so as an asian myself, I really feel the meaning of this movie

honestly i think is a really short movie and all started so slowly that we expected shane could realize and accept his bf feelings and maybe a "little bit" of drama when carrie came in, but the 70% of the movie was just the sadness that the main character was feeling, complasing his friend just to make him feel better and destroying himself again and again, maybe hoping he could get the force to leave him. Anyways i believe if the end was different or if there were 30 minutes more it could have been a good one

When Leslie's character calls Tony and gets informed that he left, there is a shot of the passport on the table. So Tony's character left it there for him. I know this video is old, but just wanted to say that Tony's character in Shang-Chi wasn't Fu Manchu. He was a new character called Wenwu and (in my opinion) had no racial stereotypes about him (he is the leader of Ten Rings, but he didn't choose the name "Mandarin". Another guy appropriated his Ten Rings and called himself the Mandarin, but Wenwu had nothing to do with him).

I was also one who went in with high hopes but couldn't finish because of the unrelenting trauma porn. I wish there was some joy sprinkled in between because even with unrequited love you can still find some uplifting, hopeful moments even if just to yourself. I guess it helps to remember human beings are producing these films and write/create from their own experience but also their own vision of how things ought to be. Not everyone spends a lot of time visioning, its hard and many are stuck at processing and re-enacting their trauma, and that's why when we find those that combine experience but also a progressive vision they really inspire us even if they have heavy themes of bad endings. The Taiwanese BL series I really enjoyed and rewatched many times is HIStory 3: Trapped - cops and gangsters, morality tale, found family yet with love, laughter and light.

Binge watching all your highly entertaining content and now late for gym! The CDramas are long because of the business mode - they get paid per episode. Loved hos they use clever imagery like colors and poetic historical references to get past censors but still thrill viewers. Going to look now to see if you've already reviewed Killer and Healer - the best Danmei most BL fans have never heard of. It only had a novel produced after the drama so no pre=drama fanbase like the other successful Cdrama BLs. The canon novel was released officially along with a canon Radio Drama and all the cut scenes (that were too gay to get past censors) in a single official video because of fan love for this BL but because Killer and Healer debuted with zero marketing and at the same time as the massive WoH promotional release it got quite overshadowed. Took three years to get through censorship but it was worth it to be the most in your face, impactful and emotionally affecting Chinese liveaction BL since Addicted
