Trail Dog Training - Training Layla At Parkwood Springs
Well, Layla has indeed stayed with us, and we've been investing time and effort in Puppy School and obedience training for a while now!
She is still young-ish, and as she was surrendered to M.I.L., her training history is basically unknown.
Parkwood is reasonably close to us, and we know the trails and other surrounding areas well, so was a good choice for us on the day.
Beware: don't do this at busy times, as it will be very distracting for your dog!
We decided to get her started under advice from various people, including our dog trainer. Basically, it's common-sense. Don't over-do things, let her build up at her own pace.

Oh my word! It's been ridiculously long since I posted a video! I'm so sorry - there's just been far too much stuff going on 😭 I've got a whole load of videos, too, but haven't even had time to check the footage! Anyway - I wanted to do a ride that's a bit harder than the Blue Route, but not as long as the full Red Route at Dalby Forest (there's a link section that goes on forever and is just s...

Hi, We were in Scotland and had planned to ride at Newcastleton, but they actually had a race on, so the trails were shut... Mathew tried to get me to just take part in the race (by telling me they would be measuring trail usage or some such nonsense 😂). In the end, we just carried on down the road back over the border and went to Kielder Forest. We'd never actually been there before either, so...
Is WussyCat Getting a Trail Dog?

Well, I'd like you all to meet Layla. Isn't this a bit odd, since I've got cats? Well yes - she's an odd-looking cat... 😂 Layla is (as far as I know and understand) a Labrador. She's a rescue that was somewhat randomly surrendered to my mother-in-law on a walk! Apparently, she's a bit of a marriage-wrecker... We visited, and she sort of wormed her way into our home... Right now, she's about 5 1...

Cannock Chase Perry’s Trail Red Options
That one will roll , just back off the speed and get well back on the bike.
5:44 So that was where I was supposed to brake. I started braking too late on the next turn and ended up washing out
Going for the first time at the weekend, your videos have been a great help to a newbie like me
mad shit
fun vid-need to get my go pro out again. I pretty much never tried the blue until I took the wife out on our HTs. The monkey only has one section open afaik as of Saturday. So Sunday we tried the blue. It’s good for the family then I can drop into the reds and meet her at the end. If you’ve not yet nailed that rock climb a year on (only just seeing your vid). Try it seated Saddle up. there’s 4 steps realistically, the rest just pretend it’s flat. First two minor steps mini-wheelie/unweight the front / and the second two bigger ones at the end you’ll need the legs rested (by sitting) to wheelie lift the front end and standing drive once the front wheel is over. No reason to drop post or stand for 99% of it. As with all rock gardens I guess it’s just pretending they’re flatter than they are and pick out the actual steps cause the tyres will bridge most the gaps. That’s what I’m feeling the wife at least :D Cool vid though.
Opposite to my above though I keep seeing people sitting on that red section rock garden across the bridge at the start. Not one has made it across sitting. That must hurt!! Momentum and standing is the way there… or a motor cross bike, seen those on there haha
Great video
Great video, it looks nice and quiet, we’re you there really early? What time does it open?
We normally go mid/ late afternoon as I am not a morning person due to my health condition. Most people don’t use the skills areas much so I hardly ever encountered others on them. I am not sure how early the hub opens but I think the pay barriers work from 8am-8pm.
Not ridden kielder since the 90s on my old Raleigh Mustang long before the trails were put in.. I often ride Hamsterley and Chopwell but plan to ride kielder this year.
interesting..
Wussy!! Check this... oh and the btw we need more trail dog video. - ruclips.net/video/5ESjdCvkAZ0/видео.html
Brave to stop on a trail!
It's not really a Black, it was built as part of the world cup X/C track. They spent a fortune on it, I think it only ran 2 times? A total waste of money, and it's not even maintained now! Best sticking to the off piste if you want what should have been built. A massive lost opportunity at Dalby.
Honestly, it looks like a lovely track and I don't see why BC don't use it in the nationals onwards from 2024 (as they've already released the 2023 dates) and if it's that "it's too hard" or "it's a UCI C1" Woody's bike park is a UCI C1 and that's not going anywhere.
This is a great video, I loved the commentary too . Thanks 😊
I’ve been away from riding for a while it’s another project. Glad to hear that the vids are still bringing a bit of joy to people 😘
Wheres wussy gone??? Iv been low ebb and not ridden for a few months, came back and no wuss videos!!
I’ve been really busy with our house renovation. Not really had time to ride or edit anything- 😢 Have to get the priorities straight, don’t you 🥺
That's a black?? Think the red at Gisburn is worse...
I don’t give the trail grades out 🤷♀️ It shares a lot of the red trail. I honestly don’t ride the worst black features. I’m not actually particularly fond of Gisburn since the did work there last - it’s smoothed things too much where the trails were more natural.
I've just come back from a week down there, sad to say that many chunks of the red are closed after storm damage. Nice riding, its not an easy trail at all.
The red trail is a good fitness run. Sprint as fast as you can. Yes those roots on the climb in the wet winter are a challenge.
Brilliant video, so little about training your dog for this on YT. First bike ride out with a lead with my dog and i had to remove the lead from the cassette several times as he kept swapping sides lol .. I found sticking to the same route to start with, got him off the lead very quickly due to the familiarity. I genuinely think he loves it ! Looking forward to seeing how your dog progresses!
Consistency has been absolutely key! We tried a longer lead once… didn’t go well 😂😂😂 she chewed through it 4 times in under 30 minutes 🥴, so we went back to this exercise a few times. Thankfully she’s actually pretty smart, so we didn’t have to spend ages on this. Videos aren’t out yet, but we’ve got her following us on the trail now 🥰 We do tend to stick to the same one, but that’s more for our convenience than hers. In a way, it’s actually better if she isn’t so familiar with a trail, as she then looks to us for direction, rather than thinking she knows it 👍
@@WussyCatMTB mines an australian kelpie im inherited from the local farmer, hes 3 years old. Had a few fenton moments but generally very obedient considering ive only had him 3 weeks. Excuse the lame encouragment talk to the dog lol but this is where im at... ruclips.net/video/LYPFJ-4fRpI/видео.html
He’s doing great! 👍 We’re not really ‘dog people’ - Layla was surrendered to my mother-in-law… she’s a bit of a home-wrecker 😂 We don’t think she had any training or anything beforehand, but she’s picked it up 👍
😂😂👍🏻
Black Trail. Awesome Sauce Wuss!
Send it wuss!
He wants you dirty lol
Noharm we all come off Wuss. Gte up and try again. Look into corner, NO front brake... feather it.. proud of ya.
Yay Awesome Wuss!! Bless her.
She’s coming along nicely as a trail dog 👍 There are few weirdo’s out there, but most people are pretty accepting if she makes a little mistake on the trail. Or even really happy and impressed with her (she’s a very happy doggo) I guess more in a later video 🥴
Great stuff Marie, i would love a trail dog as i ride alone a lot. What i would love even more than a trail dog is a trail cat!!! Now that would be something....and when the cat gets tired it could just jump onto my back and hold on and look over my shoulder where we are going.......and when "sending it" hahaha! Think i would need some thick leather like material on my shoulders though lol
Honestly- I’d prefer if our cats would be trail-cat capable, too 😂 We are just making the most of the situation with Layla - if we randomly end up with a dog, it’s going to be a trail dog… Most of our cats don’t do harnesses, and I’m not sure they’d keep their focus on us either! More likely to go and decimate the local wildlife…
@@WussyCatMTB With a trail cat on our backs and shoulders when sending it....if we were to come a cropper we'd land on our wheels the right way up every time! haha
New name for the loop......swishy!!!
Vera Lynns looks a bit rough though!
It doesn’t scare me as much as Oblivion does 😭
I am liking the look of all these trails, maybe boring to more seasoned riders but i like the swishy smooth even though i dont have a gallbladder to rattle loose any stones in now lol
Hi Marie, good to see you back, hope you are both well! Chicken Vinda blue looks great and so does London Borough of Islington!
Firstly this is in Rugeley and NOT Cannock (Check address of both Birches Valley and Go Ape). Cannock Chase is an area , which doesn't just mean Cannock. Actually the town of Cannock is two towns over, so geographically not even close to these trails. Cool video, but growing up in the area, really hate it when people keep referring to the area as Cannock. Is, never has been and hopefully never will be.
🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ Maybe complain to the Forestry Commission? www.forestryengland.uk/cannock-chase-forest/cycling-and-mountain-biking-trails-cannock-chase-forest They’re kind of why I (and probably everyone else) calls it Cannock?
@@WussyCatMTB The Chase is Cannock Chase, but it's almost like everyone forgets that all these activity centres/ trails and events are actually in the Rugeley area. IF it was near Cannock then so be it, but just because it's on Cannock Chase, doesn't mean it's Cannock. That's the frustrating part. The Forestry Commission indecently does have it's address as Birches Valley, Rugeley. It would be nice for other's to stop crediting Cannock though and actually the place it is. Cannock Chase is a big area and covers not only Rugeley, Hednesford (very little if any actually near Cannock itself unless you consider Green Heath or Huntington Cannock) and Stafford. Should everything in Staffordshire simply be called Stafford then? That said the Go Ape (Cannock) doesn't help matters, even though it is in Rugeley. According to them it's because it is Cannock Chase. I wish they would change the name to Go Ape Chase to stop the confusion in all fairness. By the way I mentioned it was a cool video, I forgot to mention that you did an awesome job at the course.
This being the Go Ape address: Birches Valley Forest Centre Car Park, Rugeley WS15 2UQ. Absolutely love the Chase. Grew up in Rugeley and spent a vast amount of my childhood, youth and adulthood in that forest. Always plenty to do and great to see the expansion of events and activities. The Forest Live and Birmingham Commonwealth just helps bring people to this amazing Forest. Be awesome now if we can help drive tourism into the town closest to the Chase instead of a town who's only real connection to the forest these days is it's namesake
Nice 1 Wuss. Swishes!. Rummblies! :P Iv never enjoyed Dalby I feel it needs a good few downhills. Great video though Wuss.
Some of the stuff at the back is just really boring, it’s true 😂 I normally prefer to do the black trail at Dixon’s Hollow. Cutting across like this from the blue climb worked well though, and took me to the more interesting sections 👍
A lot of off piste down hill trails around Dalby if you know where 😉
I’m still a bit on the fence about those…
Yip the Wuss is getting better and more confident on every vdeo. Only thing missing now....... TRAIL DOG!!!!! do it wuss.... do it... Very relaxing Video thanks Wuss just too long to watch it all. Smaller chunks for me.!
I know I'm behind on the vids 😭 just - too much other stuff going on as usual. I promise I'm working on the trail dog thing 😂
Just seen you at dalby and your form is great from the back
😂😂😂😂 You guys cracked me up with the jokes! I still can't tell whether half of the time you were doing the silly stuff (like riding straight out of the corner) on purpose 😂
This video has convinced me that this is where I'm going this weekend! I just got an E-Bike so this should be a good test
It will be a breeze on an ebike
lol entertaining :P
not a fan of trail dogs to be fair always frightens me they may run infront aof a bike
Is this from experience? 🤔 I've met several now, and not one of them has been interested in running in front of anybody else's bike. 🤨 Even Layla, as un-trained as she is so far, shows absolutely no interest in doing anything other than running along behind us. Even with the wide variety of training approaches (which range from: just take her along, she'll follow you... to: Get her recall right and the basic commands, then start out small with lots of positive reinforcement...), I've never seen one run in front of a bike. The only place I have ever seen anything like a dog running in front of a bike, it's been on forest roads or canal path type scenarios (That's not really a 'trail dog'). It's always been a 50/50 fault: badly trained dog (usually walkers), and very inconsiderate cyclists who don't seem to care if they startle other trail users. Those are generally the same ones who will put people new to the sport off by coming up behind them really fast, skidding, and probably trying to push past, too (yes - that is from personal experience...)
@@WussyCatMTB no not from experience I have cats and no I’m not anti dog and I’m not trying to put you off I just wouldn’t want to take the chance The only place I have seen it is on fails vids on here
Is it plugged in this time lol... What is your accent sounds like a mix of Yorkshire + Isreal? +Greece? like it.
😂 yes , it was… That’s a new one - not had 🇮🇱 before! No - it’s just plain old Denglish with a bit of Yorkshire thrown in 😂😇
I bought my hubby a Moby for Xmas a few years ago, it's brilliant. Used it today after a filthy ride and gave the clothes a quick hose down too. Have fun with it!
The first one we got delivered simply didn’t work… at least CRC exchanged it no questions asked.
Ha ha.. Plug it in..

I got to meet the legend herself today at parkwood very nice lady. Took time out to speak to me and my mate, And a massive thankyou to Mathew for the tips (sorry i was gassed out 25 miles yesterday) we took everything on board, The best of luck to the both of you for the future.
Awww - it was lovely to meet you! Not that you need it, but good luck with your 100 miles challenge - sounded like you were well in track already👍 Also - thanks for the patience with our little companion - I’d normally have ridden with you, but she was misbehaving badly 😂
P.s. Mathew said you got up one of the little feature- rocks most people ride around (including me) - so well done👍 P.p.s. He said you were talking about dropper posts that might fit your frame: He’s pretty sure your seat tube is 27.2mm (measure it first), so one of the most available options is a Brand-X Ascend / Ascend II dropper. You can get them from chain reaction cycles, but he mentioned there were a few on eBay, too.
@@WussyCatMTB Thank you so much i,m 48.5 miles in. PS more sausages.
@@WussyCatMTB me and my mate were talking about it on the way home were going to look in to it thanks for the info and thanks Mathew.

Great video wussy.
Awww - I’m just happy that I didn’t really like any of the bikes - could have been very expensive 😂
Thanks for sharing your experience. By the way what camera did you use to record it? GoPro?
Hi, yes - GoPro Hero 8, I’ve since added a Hero 10 so that it’s easier to get external footage at the same time. I’ve not been back to Grenoside recently as there was a lot of work going on with the trails - apparently some are being re-worked again after the Steel-City race.
One of the most entertaining channels on RUclips, we’ve managed to catch-up on 90% of your videos and enjoyed them all. My wifey shouts tickle tickle everywhere now LOL. Your channel deserves many thousands of subscribers!! Thank you!!
Awww 🥰 That is one of the nicest comments ever🥰🥰🥰 I know I’ve skipped a week here and there, but I figure that it’s just fine to do that. I’m pretty sure my husband laughs his face off behind me every time I come out with something Has your wife picked up any more Marie-isms?
She can often be heard saying “swish swish” with a supermarket trolley :)
😂😂😂
Yay its the Wuster. Great to meet you both. 1.08 i made it into ya video in carpark :) Dropper post Karchunk lol. Another Wussy word. Ya did well on the droppy drop :P ya riding def improved. Did you ride an EMTB at the test?
Haha - I didn’t spot you? Only the ‘👍’ 😂 I didn’t think to take a pic or quick vid at the time 😭 I didn’t ride an ebike on the day. When we pre-booked, they were already taken (apart from hardtail versions, which I refuse to ride). Could have done with one for the 4th ride though! Unfortunately they are pretty dead by that time on demo days - they just get abused the whole day with only a few minutes to charge in between
Hi Marie, that wiggle after you did the slope/drop haha. My pulse went up and i was swearing for you too as you approached the other very rocky and very vertical drop.....when you were first looking at it i was like.....omg.....no way!! I don't think i have enough years left to acquire the necessary skills and sphericals to attempt vertical rocky drops like that one...at least not without some serious coaching and building up to features like that. ....and a bucket load of amino acids for my emotional and mental strength! Healing takes longer as you get older when you come a cropper haha Although i'm quite confident in my abilities on flowy blue trails (and the kit i have presently reflects that) i seriously need to get some knee and elbow protection for rougher more feature packed trail riding! I have a great posh poc helmet though its only open face, some mx gloves(from my motorbike days which are perfect) five ten shoes etc, still have all my motorbike gear, full helmet, armoured jacket, armoured trousers and armoured jeans and all the thermal gear and waterproofs... but they maybe slightly overkill haha...and way too heavy for riding on cycles with :) I think along with at least knee and elbow pads i could do with getting a full face helmet and some good goggles/sunglasses too....i have some clear riding glasses which i use when riding my hybrid when fitness/road riding, and some polarized amber fishing glasses i actually bought for driving many moons ago which are fantastic for colour and contrast highlighting but not sure they'd be up to getting hit with stones and anything trails could throw up at them. ....i cant imagine i'd get hit in the face with a fish whilst out on the bike, you never know though eh? haha Update on the healing after my goinkbladder surgery 7 weeks ago today, everything has gone well so far, just the remnants of one dissolvable stitch to go and that will be the end of that, seem to be ok with eating thankfully so i can tuck into fish and chips, pizza and other fatty foods now and then without too much worry, for some people digesting fats after the removal of the goinkbladder can be problematic and whatever they ate can "pass" straight through them, i have been told if start to have trouble then taking bile salts with food can help with that. So far i probably wont have to. Too much information haha. i've been out on the bike a few times locally for short rides but have been busy working through Ramadan, its a busy time of the year for us taxi drivers when many of the Asian lads disappear to break their fast around sunset, glad its over with now and looking to get out on some trails when the weather is nice..... i'll be soon off up to Parkwood, rother valley and lady cannings too, i'll have to re-watch a couple of your videos because there were some great flowy trails you've been on i would like to try too, if forget which ones they were. Even though its local to me i'll be giving the teeth, bone, brain, sinew and goinkbladder shaking pub run of Grenoside a miss haha, it was after riding the pub run last September that my goinkbladder issues began, think i shook the goinkstones loose i didnt know i had back then! Having said that i may go on the Greno pubrun again but make sure i have my tyre pressures and suspension set up appropriately, it probably makes a huge difference! :) Along with it being 7 weeks today since my surgery, it was ten years ago today May the Fourth 2012 my dads funeral up at Grenoside crematorium overlooking Sheffield....Qi-Gon-Jim.....he went out like a Jedi!!.....which helped at the time, and still does, due to a flood of other synchronicities and shared experiences we had together back then and with my son through his childhood....and he is soon to be 26yrs old a week tomorrow, where does time go? :)
Glad you're doing well after your surgery and your recovery is coming along 👍 The little shimmy... yeah - that's just me un-filtered 😂😂😂 Those two entries weren't actually too bad at all, but I've always avoided riding them for some reason. I'll get around to actually riding Worry Gill some time - just have to build up to it 😊 No shame in walking away from a feature if you're not feeling up to it 😉 Definitely get some good trail type elbow and knee pads. I wear the full-face mainly because I scraped my face open once, and since I work with people, I really don't want that again - it's actually a convertible helmet - so the chin-bar comes off, which is handy when you get stuck slogging up long fire-road climbs... I think my riding glasses were sub £40 off amazon... they even do the transition lens thing - no need to spring ££££ for expensive oakleys or similar!
@@WussyCatMTB Thanks Marie👍. I think thats the trick for Worry Gill, as with most things in life that can be overwhelming, building up to it, doing similar smaller features until confidence and momentum with new balance and skill can get you through such things! Going to have to look around for a helmet with a removable chin bar, my motorbike helmet has something similar which lifted up out of the way, obviously too heavy for this job though. The mtb helmet i have is really good but when i get a little more adventurous on trails with features etc i'm going to need that extra protection of a full face helmet(with removable chin bar), once i have one and some pads and new glasses/goggles(they can be so expensive...in excess of £200 some of them 😵) i think that will then be my spending done....apart from general maintenance on the bike etc.
It’s not cheap, is it … On the other hand - how much are your various body parts worth to you? I’m self-employed, so I can’t really afford to get injured 🤕 We both have Bell helmets - mine is a super 3R, and he has a Super DH (which is actually downhill rated with the bar attached). I think all the big brands have convertible lids, but if you already have a nice helmet, it’s probably more cost effective to just get a nice, light full face. I rarely actually ride without the chin bar - it’s where I mount the camera now…
Great to meet you both. Good video... Ha ha I didn't bring my pedals.. Naughty.. ;) emotional stability ha ha. Love it.
Sorry - you know I had to sneak that in 😂 Was Great to just bump into each other 👍 On the + side with the pedals - Yeti and Nukeproof just left their own ones on the bikes, u less people were riding clips. Still - I preferred mine 😉
@@WussyCatMTB did u ride the yeti? Hope ya got more vids coming.
Yep- rode the SB165. Also pedalled the SB115 up that fire road climb as I had run out of energy on the bike I was testing 😂 And yes- there are a few more videos lined up 👍
Don’t worry 😉 There is always next time, if you feel you want to tackle the feature 😊 Maybe your turn marks will even still be there 🤙
It really does look a lot steeper in real life! We’ll see - going to have to build up to this one some more before trying again 👍
Gave ya a shout out.. hope it helps ya, Will do a proper video on channels i love next month. Great to meet you. ruclips.net/video/Gqbx9ZruRL4/видео.html
Likewise! Shame we didn’t bump into each other out on the trail- we still need to get that ride in (you’re going to have to go acoustic now 😇). Was great to see the other trail of the demo day - we stuck to the long fire road climb one for consistency. Been picking up more subscribers recently- not sure what to attribute it to since I’m behind a Video right now 😂
How long have you been riding?
I got back to it at the end of 2018, after a good 10 years away from it. It’s not a very good indicator though - there are too many variables. Some people are able to hop on a bike and just do it, others have anxieties or other conditions that may not even be immediately obvious. 🤷♀️ As with most things- it really shouldn’t ever be about others, but about yourself 👍 Want to pootle about leisurely on Blue Trails? Great 👍 Want to send massive road-gaps? Also great 🤙 It’s all about YOUR ride 😊
I totally agree, I think you do great I like watching your videos 🤘🏻
A rapid dismount! I feel your pain, I hope your bruises weren't too bad.
No bruises- the pads did their job 👍 I just wish I knew exactly what freaks me out about this particular corner. It has to be a combination of things.
@@WussyCatMTB pads are a life saver!
