Grenoside DH3 - Let's Talk About Line-Choice Ep 3

  • You might have seen my recent video about the MTB trails at Grenoside Woods, Sheffield where I went down DH3, which is graded Black, and I had never ridden before.
While I really like that type of rocky, rooty riding, the fact is that there are a lot of line choice options on practically every tricky section.
The thing is: You can't always spot them while riding the trail, especially when riding the trail for the first time, so it's time to talk about them!
Sessioning is a great answer to the problem, but that is just as difficult to do on busy weekend days, when there are lots of other riders about.
During that ride, I went back over the sections that I felt the least comfortable with on my rides down, and decided to analyse my line options and wherever possible (or I was comfortable with), give them a go myself.
Episode 3 is from the section coming immediately out of the corner(s) from Episode 2.
There are a ton of chunky rocks in the way, with a berm to catch you, if you want to take that route.
There's also a slightly less intuitive (well - it is to me, at least) line over a rock drop that can be used to straighten the run out.
You really do need to have the speed to pull that one off properly though, as it sort of requires you to gap over the rocks which would otherwise un-settle you.
It's doable at slower speeds, but it wasn't my preference, it was a lot smoother and faster for me to open up the corner.
The Greno Woods trails have taken a bit of a beating in recent years, with very little maintenance being done on them, due to Covid.
There are a whole bunch of 'Make Greno Great Again' signs, put up by Ride Sheffield who are responsible for a lot of the awesome trails around here.
These are community funded, so if you ride and love these trails, please do consider contributing:

Parking is free, but can be incredibly busy as Wharncliffe and Greno are very popular with walkers, too:

It’s quite interesting to see for myself.
I don’t tend to take those lines when I’m just going down stuff, but it’s pretty obvious just how much smoother and faster it is for me 😇

      I’m experimenting with it.
Interestingly, some of the longer ones do much better long-term 🤷‍♀️
