      You do have to read the crossover schematic and know the basic of a circuit diagram, since the components might be moved around I didn't show that part in my videos. For the tweeter section for example, right before the 2.35 ohm resistor before it goes to the capacitor, you'd hook up the positive from the amp. This does take me a bit of time, but it ensures you get everything connected properly.

      I fasten the inner part to a scrap piece of wood, then secure scrap blocks around the piece of wood being cut. This way I can take it out for fitting and put it back in the same place to change the size if needed. There's a video in this Playlist series of me doing exactly that.

      If this is a ported box, start at 20 hz, sounds to me like you missed it, go up in 1 hz increments, take your time, you'll also notice when you hit the spot the port will be moving a ton of air while the speaker looks stopped. If it is indeed at 80 to 90 hz the box might need to be redesigned. My guess is either you missed the tuning frequency or the box isn't correctly designed. Do you have the make and model number of the speaker along with the dimensions of the box and port?

    Great tip! I've also recently made a box for my mini desktop speaker design with moulded front baffle (CNC'ed with ballnose) so that there are no hard edges. I've used ductape and some clamps to try fit them. I even done some sine sweeps to see if I could make a crossover that's within the range I wanted. It did resonate quite a bit but glued vs not glued had almost the same SPL chart, just the distortion was much higher with just tape of course. I also experimented with two different types of glue at the same time. I used normal wood glue and the foamy wood glue type. I applied the normal glue on the outer edges and foam glue on the inner edges, just one bead next to the other. The foamy glue seals all gaps and the wood glue, containing water, accelerates the foamy glue as it needs moisture to harden quickly. I think normal wood glue is also a bit stronger and squeeze out is easy to remove/sand and doesn't soak in the wood as deep.

    • @davewiebespeakerdesign
      @davewiebespeakerdesign 2 месяца назад

      I did the same, measured the sound, glue vs no glue,I agree that's a huge difference. Can't believe how much it vibrated. I wish I knew someone close by that let me play with their CNC. That would give me a chance to really play. All in time I guess. Thanks for leaving your experiences, always good to hear what others are making.

    If you care, even where it doesn't matter, put down a steel straightedge and score the line with a knife on the side that will be prone to tearout. The difference is night and day. Alternatively, use a router with guides and templates. Finally, something I never see anyone mantion- when you're cutting diagonally across the grain it matters a lot which way you're going. Like petting a cat, you can cut with or against the grain on a diagonal and it also makes a world of difference.

      Sounds like the port is just too small for the enclosure. I would start by loading the driver in WinISD and build the box the driver wants. Porting a box is never as simple as just adding a port. I suspect your tuning frequency is way off what it should be as well.

      @@davewiebespeakerdesign exactly what i did, unfortunately driver needs 15L enclosure is aprox 10L. i've imput the port diameter in wini 3cm and gave me around 80mm lenght exactly the size of the port i bought :). The only thing it's not flared in the inside but i guess most aren't. I have another port of 4cm i think and will try with that one. Difficult around here in Romania to find ports this small. I would use a passive radiator but don't have the room for it. And if i use it sealed, by looking at the driver, compared with ported, it's excursion is way longer and wouldn't want to stress it like that. Tested with a plug into the port. Another option would be AP but don't have the room either :(

    I think the issue is "time alignment". Assuming the sound originates where the cone/diaphragm attaches to the voice coil former, the drivers have to be compensated with time delay so that they are all eminating from the same vertical plane. There is a feature in x sim to add time delay when "tuning" a driver. I found that you must select "derived" to activate this function. For now I'm going to try measuring the relative distance difference from the tech drawings in the driver spec sheets to provide the time delay in inches. I'm not sure if it should be a positive or negative number. I think positive. I will be trying this hopefully later today. I think this measurement can be better accomplished with an omni mic and software but I don't have that or the drivers yet. I would like to see great results in x sim before I purchase drivers. Then I suppose the drivers will need to be mounted with the cones time aligned. When the frd/zma files are measured, that information is collected with their normal distance to the baffle board. I think you can achieve good results when ignoring time alignment BUT it will require a more complicated crossover to hopefully make it happen and then the drivers could simply be mounted on the same vertical plan I think. 🤓 Any further developments you learn would be appreciated in a reply. Greatly appreciate your content on RUclips! Thanks Vincent

    • @davewiebespeakerdesign
      @davewiebespeakerdesign 6 месяцев назад

      This was a while back since I did this so I'll do my best to recall what was going on. Since I have the drivers in question in different boxes I was able to move them and check time alignment. It didn't change the resulting measurement pointing back to phase. There might be more to time alignment that you're referring to that I don't understand which is highly possible. The icing on the cake at this present time is I have a phase problem with my subwoofer at the present time. You can switch the phase on the subwoofer, but the kicker, in one phase it cancels audio from the lowest speaker, in the other phase it cancels some audio from the bottom range of the mid. I've managed to adjust in the eq to a tolerable point. I'm glad you like the channel, it's been a while since I've posted, there are plans for the new year. I'm still active!

    An excellent video that can help people move forward quickly. Sad with all the comments from people who think they know things better in a false vision of perfection. I started building speakers in the mid-1970s when the methodology and resources looked different. After that I worked in R&D in telecom and other industries for a few decades, I know what advanced measurement technology and its applications are all about. I also know that a flat frequency response does not guarantee a great experience. It is ultimately the listener's ears and brain that decide what sounds good. Long before today's available resources, I was building speakers that made people happy.......despite the resources being paper, pencil and a calculator, sometimes supplemented by writing software that, for example, calculated horn speakers. These days the tools are better but not an absolute requirement to do something well. Forge your own happiness with the tools at your disposal.

      @davewiebespeakerdesign 6 месяцев назад

      Very well written. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. The earliest I built anything was in the 90's with much less in resources and much more trial in error. I agree the tools are great, but for me I would agree they are a starting point. Ultimately how it sounds is the real deal. I'm looking forward to the new year to continue the journey. Your feedback is most welcome should you follow.

    Hi Dave, I have watched enjoyed a couple of your video’s. You seem to be having a good time working your way through the process. I know that it can be a bit frustrating, but as they say, no pain, no gain. In years past I worked as in audio sales. It was fun, I enjoyed helping people find their sound. The job eventually led me to the world of DIY. My checkbook could not keep up with my curiosity. I did several electronic kits for myself and others, and that eventually brought me to building a SET 2A3 amp from scratch, based on an article in Sound Practices. A tube audio magazine form the 90’s. The amps worked and sounded great. It was so fun. I now, years later, I am dipping my toes into building some speakers. I am going to tackle some kits first, but I plan on building from the ground up. I have been gathering the necessary tools and materials to dive in. As for your build, try not to get too caught up in the hype, and do what works for you. Something that you may want to consider since you have experimented with separate enclosures already for the low frequency section, and the mids and highs. Maybe consider using a dedicated subwoofer amplifier, giving you the ability to dial the bass in for your room and take that bass load off the rest of your system. The other thing would be that if you decide to work on another speaker project, it will be easier to integrate them into your system. Just a thought. Mark

      Hi Mark, thanks for the detailed reply and sharing some of your experience. I have thought about bi amping the sub driver in a tower and making that it's own thing to take the load off the system, that has definitely crossed my mind. I've also got a few different ideas on how I might set that up. On the same note, I've also done some research with the idea of active crossovers, but there again it's completely untouched territory for me which is fine, but will require some research and learning. I'm okay with that but at the same time, like you, I'm trying to watch how much the hobby will load my cheque book as well. Whatever I decide to do, I will share with the viewers of the channel, who knows what I'll come with, only time will tell.

    How many mh is the bass coil & uf of the tweeter caps ? Your doing it right, you don't need to do all the engineering bs in a 2 way system cross over 50 - 150 hz above the low end of the tweeter & the only way to get it right is to try different coils and caps, you need a bunch of each kinda costs a bit every speaker i build blows people's minds & i don't use a computer design

    • @davewiebespeakerdesign
      @davewiebespeakerdesign 10 месяцев назад

      Agreed the computer simulation only gets you so far, after that I'm sure with experience and time I would be able to come up with a generic starting point, however, I am nowhere near that experienced, so I'll have to use every tool I have. Since this video, I've added a third speaker and rebuilt the crossover. In the video you watched the bass had a 1.1mH and a 47uf to ground, the tweeter, 13 uf then .43mh to ground, then another 62uf cap and a 4.7uf cap to ground.

I put my test caps and coils on a serving Table right next to where I listen & run longer separate wires as you do, to each speaker, now I can keep switching in seconds without getting up ,also I find no need to make speakers sound good in my back yard on top of a ladder, just make them sound the best you can for the room your using "pretty sure the average listening room is somewhere around 12 x12 to 14x14 no ? "

If I wanted to really do this right I would need to acoustically treat this room, it's WAY too bright atm.

    I respect your efforts. I also started this hobby from 2018 but learning very slowly. I suggest you invest in something like minidsp and see in real-time what phase and crossover s can do to help. Passive in mains with active in woofers or subwoofer is better idea in my humble opinion. Speaker spacing is also a big concern, get the woofer and tweeter in close proximity. Try filling the boxes with Rockwool or pillow stuffing ,or you can even try to seal them to see you can mitigate that dip in the response. Speaker boundary response is also a reason for this kind of dips. Standing waves inside cabinet is also can be a reason. Play with Speaker position and remessure. I really salute your efforts and your approach. Me also a learner like you. Best of luck.

    • @davewiebespeakerdesign

      I've thought about mini dsp, I might experiment with active in the future. You're right about needing some stuffing in the speaker boxes as well, they could use something, spacing should be closer as well. Only time will tell where this ends up. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

    Cool video. A little background on this. What is basically happening is the mass of the air in the port becomes a spring that oscillates at a specific frequency. Although it looks like the driver isn't doing any work, it's actually pushing and pulling against the back wave that is trying to move it, so it's exerting energy being a barely moving wall.

      And that's exactly what causes ported enclosures to sound inaccurate! because it is not a perfect world! in other words you can't have your cake and eat it too. On the other hand a sealed enclosure drastically improves response and frequency alignment relative to Output displacement at the compromise of efficiency, but' now amplifiers are so cheap for the amount of power we can buy! it makes absolute sense if you're a perfectionist audio file that demands accurate audio reproduction of High Fidelity than a sealed subwoofer enclosure is your only choice.. .

    Hi. I like the videos from you so far. Got a couple of questions: 1-What is better - tune port to higher frequency or to a lower one than the fs? 2-if able to tune below the fs, how much lower, 5,10 or 15hz lower than fs? Keep up the amazing box building! Thanks.

      I appreciate you checking out the channel. I can't answer your questions with certainty but some reading seems to have people typically going slightly above Fs. If you use WinISD start by what it picks for you, it defaults to the theoretical best provided you have driver specs loaded correctly.
