OFF GRID cabin BUILD. CUTTING TREES AND HANGING BARN DOORS.
Today on the off grid cabin build, while I'm waiting for the door hinges to get out of shipping purgatory, I take some time to clear the land at the cabin before the leaves are back on the trees. I'm still getting comfortable with the Kubota L3901, but it's great to have a tractor with a bucket on the homestead. It makes a big difference and saves so much time.
I also start getting the barn doors moved into position, so when the barn door hinges arrive, I can easily get them mounted and move on to the next task, the window.

DIY Post and BEAM CABIN build
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.2 года назад
As I wrap up the last wall on the Post and beam cabin I catch myself looking around at all of the wood that I've cut and hammered into place. Oddly enough, as I was working with the heavy timbers, I never paid much attention. But, as the board and batten siding goes on, I'm shocked to see how much wood it takes to DIY a Homestead cabin. It's a great feeling to know that the hard work is almost ...
I'm Building An OFF GRID Cabin- The Roof Goes On!

In November 2020, I started cutting the wood for my timberframe Off-Grid Cabin. Since I've been a kid, like a lot of people, I've dreamed about building my own cabin in the woods. There's still plenty of work to be done on the cabin in the woods, but today was a milestone for me. We'll use the ...

Now that the roof is going on the off-the-grid cabin, I can really see the building beginning to take shape, and it's everything I'd dreamed about. The roof isn't tongue and groove pine, it was impossible to source and I found myself having to make a decision. The boards are 1x6 rough sawn, I really like the way it's turning out. I wasn't certain we were going to get the roof on before we start...

I have experienced the “milky” oil in my Massey 204. My first change didn’t get all the water out, and that all mineral 90w costs money. I drain it, put some in a high quality stainless bucket and put that on a hotplate. It’s set to slowly come up to just above 212F. Oil doesn’t mind seeing 215F, but all the water will leave. Maybe overnight, but when all bubbling and activity has ceased, and you see calm clean oil, let it cool and put it back into the tractor.

We do the same thing but with Nitro Methane. It is mixed with Alcohol and after a couple runs oil gets deluded. But, we use a lower Temperature. It takes longer. Better than blowing up! lol.

A great vid, and I really appreciate you showing the failures. This is a perfect illustration of why everyone doing this type of work should own a copy of the Ashley Book of Knots and spend some time familiarizing themselves with ropes and pulleys. While the use of a mast isn't bad, the devil's in the details and making sure everything is secured and operating like you want... well, that saves a ton of problems. We've lost a lot of knowledge over the generations, but the use of ropes and pulleys is still common enough that we can watch videos from the tradesmen who still use the on a daily basis and apply their techniques to our circumstances.

Those are GRK fasteners I used for the knee braces. As I recall they were 8” long. For parts of the build I used a cheap Bauer impact driver to run them in… if you watch enough of the videos, you’ll see it get smashed by a beam…. I used a Milwaukee impact afterward. When I was asking too much of the battery impacts, I used a corded 1/2” drill… it was unwieldy, but plenty of power.

Completed a 12’ X 16’ post and beam for wife as a super she shed. Used reclaimed doors and windows. Used oak cut in east Texas which I hauled myself. Oak ceiling/roof, flooring. Pine shiplap for inside walls and tapered siding horizontally for exterior. Metal roof. Foundation on pads since I cant dig into the rock/ground. Turned out great. Figure about $15,000. Took eight months in the Texas heat. Single guy with tractor to help lift and it worked out more solid than my home. Used three of the jigs and about $1,000 for the aluminum fittings. Just found your posting. Super nice guy at Connext. His daughter is also super nice. There are other providers but this seemed the best option and the result was great.
