Photographing Brown Bears in Wild Alaska, Part 2. Fishing bears, cubs, the trip of a lifetime!
Even after all these years spent photographing Brown Bears in wild Alaska, these trips, the landscape and bears still give me a thrill every time I return. There's something special about waking up to the call of the loon, ptarmigan or wolf and watching bears day in and day out as they fish, wrestle and play.
The adventure continues this week with part 2 of this year's Bear photography adventure! If you haven't seen part 1 of this adventure, you can do so here: ruclips.net/video/Laxb-kZ5tmc/видео.html

    Your Pika image at 1:50 is superlative! I have spent many days afield on high elevation rockslides, specifically after Pika photos, but have never had a composition as nice as that present itself to me. Wonderful image!

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein День назад

      Thanks so much, he was pretty cooperative 😁 Pika are so much fun. They're pretty habitual to the areas they use in rock fields and will even use the same rocks as lookout points. I've found if I watch from a distance for a while and figure out which rocks they're using, I can position myself pretty well for the shot and composition that I want. Just takes a bit of time is all. I hope you get the images you want!

    EXCELLENT! I found the 4 Ps to help with my wildlife photography here in Alaska. 1) Position. If in the mountains, use the hillside elevation to bet at or slightly below the eye level of the animal. Position to capture catchlight in the subject's eyes. Use the topography to position yourself so the animal feeds towards you with the first photos at eye level with the animal on the skyline of a hill. For perched birds and waterfowl, they typically lift off into the wind so position yourself with the wind at your back. Most wild mammals have a keen sense of smell, so position yourself with the wind in your face for wild mammals 2) Planning. Plan your position so the animal naturally comes towards you in a still position. Often a moose, caribou, or bear will come quite close with that type of planning. 3) Patience. Patience and let that "magic moment" happen naturally and the animal does not know you are there. 4) Persistence. Enjoy the journey and by visiting the same site many times you learn about the perfect location for light, background, and animal movements.

    You really have created quite the opportunity for people with this workshop. I know you put in years of leg work beforehand. Were you able to get all that gear out on one float plane or was it multiple? I bet that place is imprinted on your soul. I have enjoyed seeing the footage and photos of the shots you got. The photo that you ended up using for the thumbnail of part two is so cool, back lit spray. Hope you and your guest had a great experience out there this year.

    Hey Jimmy, cool video, here is my recent experience. I had been a Nikon shooter since the begining and my latest kit was a D850 coupled with a Nikkor AF-S 200-500mm. I absolutely loved this kit and took A LOT of great photos with it. But then a similar thing happened to me, I dropped my kit on a rocky path which I usually keep attached on a "Rapid Fire" style shoulder strap. I had just replaced the hook attachment and it turned out to be cheap and unreliable. So my D850 took a hard hit but the lens was still fine. I sent the D850 for repair to Nikon which took about 2 months but then I needed a replacement. After a lot of thinking and searching and video looking, I decided to switch to a Canon R7 and the RF100-500mm. The switch was not easy, I had to learn again some basic things, but I am AMAZED by the quality of this kit. Photo quality is fantastic, AF is light years away from my D850 and the biggest plus is size and weight. My Nikon was bulky but at the time I did not know what I know now. I still have my Nikon kit but my Canon is the one I use since then. I'm 58 and going out in the field very often and the gain in weight and size is an enormous advantage for my back and shoulders. The best kit for me now is the one that lets me be the longest in the field without hurting and struggling.

    My go to camera is Sony A7 mark II when i go fotographing in towns and upclose events, my go to camera atm for wild life is My Nikon D3300 , with a 300mm lens , reason i use My nikon is i dont have a better camera atm , i feel the sony A7 Mark II is better for city life , i have a 50mm prim and 18-70 mm kit lens . Now im not one of thouse guys that have a camera religion , i have use Leica when i was 7 years old , borrowed my grand parrents camera, it was fun . today i have shot with Panasonic , Nikon , Olympic , Leica ,and ofc Nikon , still need to get an Cannon camera to try and test out , as i said i have no religion when it comes to cameras, i shoot pichures with every camera i get to try or own. and considdering im closer to 50 than 40 then i had some experience :) hopefully i can try out the Cannon R5 one day and mabee the sony Alpha 1 , but equiment cost alot of money so it will a while before that gonna happen :) im actualy considdering going back to old school camera , i missing the time where you have to develop you pithures youself , where you have to be sure before you took the picthures :)
