Welcome to the home of "Diary of an elephant orphan" an independent documentary by filmmaker me: Hermien Roelvert-van Gils. :)
On this channel I will share outtakes with you (I filmed for 4 years with HERD elephant orphanage in South Africa) as I have lots of beautiful, funny, inspiring and quirky footage of little Khanyisa, the herd and other elephants. Sharing is caring right?!
UPDATE:
I started a new playlist: DIARY OF A RESCUE ANIMAL. from Sep 2024, I am filming with other rescue organisations since I am finished with the documentary. These organisations really need help and exposure and donations and support. So - I am using my skill set to try and make a difference and hopefully create something sustainable in future using this RUclips channel to create a worldwide community to drive change for good.

This was Khensani's first time ever to give a baby elephant milk in the bush amongst the elephant herd. Meeting a large elephant is a daunting experience the first time.

Dearest Rex is holding on (barely)... but some days are worse than others (please send your prayers). Then we investigate a tip off about someone mistreating his dogs, we see goats walking in... and the pup who was scared of humans... well, see for yourself! All you need is love...

While filming in the bush with the herd, elephant matriarch Tokwe was trying to get to some green shoots under a dead tree... So instead of struggling, she moved the obstacle... regardless on who the tree will land :) We all had a chuckle at Tokwe :)

Rex the emaciated dog is eating! But it's a long road to recovery for him. Kittens from a feral mom is groomed for adoption and a power-breed dog is rescued.

After some play fighting with one of the younger bulls, a terrapin decided to take Sebakwe on... but unlike the younger elephant bulls, the terrapin doesn't care about hierarchy or who's the dominant leader... :) So it does look like the terrapin bullies Sebakwe, the big, dominant elephant bull... :)

So I looked around in my own community (I drove over 22 000km for the elephant documentary and something closer would be wise:) and landed on HAWS - an animal shelter for unwanted cats and dogs. Flashback: Out on a walk early on in her rehab, we encountered lion scat from the night. Khanyisa first was perturbed and anxious... but then she remembered that she is an elephant. :) See her reaction at the end :)

While out in the bush with the elephants and the carers, Shepherd shares a sweet root with us - but it's not long before Lundi and Khanyisa want their share as well. :) So there goes our treat... The sweet roots are from the Commiphora species. While editing this piece, I had to contact Owen for the exact name as I couldn't remember. It's the Pepper Bark. But now I wonder if it's the Paperbark....
