Welcome to my boat rebuild series on my 1983 20' Sea Ox. Today, I actually get a lot done, but not without realizing a grave mistake I made earlier in the build. I installed the four hatches, the fuel water separator with the proper fittings, the fuel feeder hose going from the tank to the separator and from the separator to the motor's fuel filter, and I also fixed some of my previous mistakes...

Welcome to my boat rebuild series on my 1983 20' Sea Ox. Today, we installed the hydraulic steering. Thanks for sharing!! I’m looking forward to seeing all the progress from video to video. I recently picked up a ‘74 Wellcraft 15’CC. Mine was all intact but of course I’ve already had to cut out the decking over the bilge because it was soft. All the old foam is water logged and next is to keep cutting the deck to see how far up the soggy stringers go. Thanks again! I’m already getting some good lessons from ya 🙏

    • @intotheforrest
      @intotheforrest 7 месяцев назад

      I just looked back at some old footage where I was cleaning up the barn, which I didn't upload, and I said that I used about 17.5 gallons of poly resin for the whole project (20' boat): stringers, deck, bulkheads, and boxes. This isn't including the transom, as the previously owner rebuilt that before I bought it.

    • @intotheforrest

      It's poly resin thickened with cabosil to a peanut butter-like consistency. Sometimes including milled fibers for extra strength.

    • @intotheforrest
      @intotheforrest 7 месяцев назад

      I bought the controls with the used motor and previous owner kept his teleflex cables, so I had to buy new cables and new connectors separately. I had no problems with the longer connectors when using them, but since those obviously didn't fit just right, I did end up getting the shorter ones - much better fit.

    Welcome to the club! Your boat looks great! It is absolutely a bag of mixed emotions to do something like this, but in the end, it's all worth it! Everything takes longer than expected, costs more, and plans are nothing more than hopeful dreams like winning the lottery 😂. My experience wasn't as involved as yours. But I have a 15ft Terry bass boat that sat for almost 5 years. I had zero plans for it other than taking it to the dump. I one day hooked it up to my truck to tow it to the dump. I pulled it about 2ft and the tongue of the trailer broke off. It was full of dirt, weeds, and had a tree growing out of it. I started removing junk out of it and before I knew it, I had it cleaned out. All electrical, flooring, transom, and steering were shot. The motor was completely unknown from sitting uncovered for years. I spent weekends and weekdays ripping out the flooring, stringers, and transom. I took the fiberglass shell and power washed it. With no experience with any of this, I purchased lumber from the local retailer and started to measure and cut. I tried getting help from online forums, but got so much mixed information. One poster would say you are doing fine, and another would say everything is wrong and I am basically a moron 😂. But anyway, the existing stringers and transom were nothing more than dust. I got treated wood and let it dry in the summer sun for about 3 weeks after cutting. I used West Marine epoxy and fiberglass cloth to install all new stringers that I bonded to the hull with marine 5200. I painted the inside hull with oil based paint and poured marine foam everywhere except the center. I epoxied 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood for the transom which I think is more than enough for a 40hp Yamaha engine. I also installed a 3/4 floor that is fiberglassed over and painted it I sanded the outside of the boat and used my sprayer for a nice paint job. I installed all new hardware, wiring, switches, etc. The motor was a HUGE HUGE challenge! I spent countless hours over the course of a month removing stuck and broken bolts. I have never gone through so much pb blast, cursing, and throwing things in my life! Phuck saltwater outboard stuck bolts!! It was a 1990 Yamaha 2 cylinder 40hp engine. The local marine machine shop gave me good advice. I opted for 2 new sleeves, new pistons, rings, carb rebuilds, and some other stuff. He said I was doing it right and it would run like new. With no outboard experience, I had him assemble the block. He provided me with the rest of the gaskets. He also told me to bring the motor to him before starting to check everything including timing and to adjust the carbs.... The motor fired right up and I followed break in exactly how he instructed me to. I'm sorry, I'm babbling 😂. My point is that restoring a boat is the 💩 est job, but extremely rewarding! I know I probably did some things the pros would laugh at. But after 4 years, she still floats and the motor is touch key start!
