    I have a 1980 Bayfield 29 in Halifax, NS, and is how I found you. I am currently installing an 8kw vevor diesel heater under the cockpit and ducting it into the main area. Many people at my club use and love them. They're very safe, effecient and low maintenance. The heater is located under the rear hinged seat. Open it and when looking in you will notice to the left, a vertical section of wood and glass that separates the foot of the starboard quarterbirth from the engine bay. The heater is hung there, perpendicular to the boats length, and exhausted through the transom. Its the best spot i could find, since the boat is quite small and most of the space has already been used wisely

    • @newfoundsailing
      @newfoundsailing 7 дней назад

      I agree that the transom is probably the best place for the exhaust. I might end up putting it back the ultimately for ease of refuelling too, since I don't have a diesel engine and therefore no tank except the small one one the heater itself. I'll check out that location. Thanks.

    MOTOR MOUNT 2 STROKE VRS 4 STROKE A little 6 horse sail drive weight is 60pounds, the cheaper 2 stroke rising mounts are rated too 100 pounds max for a 20 horse power engine but must be a 2 stroke engine. Why can we not put a lighter 6 horse with a 60 pound 4 stroke that has 1/3 the thrust power of a 20 horse motor ( which weights 100 pounds ) on this lighter bracket? I do not understand why you would be concerned about the rating using a small 6 horse. And that would get your engine raised out of the water when sailing. and those lighter 2 stoke mounts are half the cost for the heavy duty models. I have a 5 horse 4 stroke sail drive mercury on these lighter mounts with no concerns and can raise/tilt the motor. Also do you think that a 5 horse would propel the Bayfield 23/25?

    • @brianferguson6278
      @brianferguson6278 2 месяца назад

      Also I thought it maybe higher vibration, yet i looked it up and this is the response "These engines ( 4 stroke) are quieter and produce less vibration because they don't fire as much as two-stroke engines. "

    • @newfoundsailing
      @newfoundsailing 2 месяца назад

      The way it was explained to me is that it's not just the weight of the 4stroke, it's also the torque. Now I have no idea what that actually means, and a 2stroke bracket would have probably been fine. However, I was putting a brand new 2000$ engine on it so I didn't want to take any chances. I opted to go with what was specified for my motor. As for the 5hp, I think it would move it in and out of the marina, but I'd feel better with at leas the 8hp in case I ever had to bring the bow around in a bit of wind. The 8hp pushes my boat at about the same speed as the original inboard engine did (5.5 ish knots). I think the 5hp sail drive has a different prop and has more push, so it might be fine. I guess you'd have to try it to be sure. Thanks for commenting. I hope this helps.

      Do you have a Bayfield 23/25?

    • @brianferguson6278
      @brianferguson6278 2 месяца назад

      @@newfoundsailing No, a Sandpiper (1300pounds) with a new 5 horse mercury sail drive. I gave that boat to my son and they use an electric trolling motor instead of the new gas engine, so I have a new sail drive motor 5 horse. I have looked a few Bayfield 23, 23/25, and the 25. all are about 3500 pounds. All have engines that are questionable and replacement is about $6,000.00 for a new engine on the low side. So I really want to purchase a Bayfield this summer to do some sailing on the great lakes, yet will not do it with the existing motors as I just do not trust them, the engines are all pushing 50 years and are beyond their reliability life span. I saw you are using a 6 not an 8 horse motor, and was wondering are you at full power? If you run an engine at 75% load it is happy, so if you are using your 6 at 50% load then my 5 at 75% is producing about the same thrust. My decades of sailing the sandpiper tells me that I would never sail with the motor dragging in water, so I would use a raising mount. I have asked my home insurance firm about insuring a Bayfield with an existing 6.5 or 8 horse desiel with a 5 horse backup kicker and they are not sure if they would provide insurance on an older boat built in 1975 to 1984 years, yet they are happt to insure my Sandpiper from the same period. They sat purchase the boat then we will decide about insurance, and that is why I have been on the fence with a Bayfield 25 purchase. Marina's will not lower the boat into the water without insurance.

  • @Gmansailing

    Sequel to this experiment!! As you saw on the vid 9:42 eo I got into the boat right away and started the engine not a smart idea!!! While the boat was sitting there for several hrs on a steep angle forward all the dirt in my tank and 😅 filter ran then when I turned over the engine same dirt got sucked into my injectors causing my engine to miss. That resulted in half a day’s work. In hindsight this all could have been avoided if I had turned off the valve at tank and cleaned filter before starting engine. I guess the good thing is you all won’t make my mistake lol.

    Well done! Be aware recent Bénéteau stipulates in most of its documentation that the keel is strictly built to hang from the grid in the hull and not made to support the hull. I personally know of two bénéteaus who were lightly grounded in mud and after being surveyed they were totaled by the insurance underwriter. Yours is a full keel m(1980's?) so might be different, but be careful! I am in Vancouver and a "quick lift" for a 36ft is 300$ total. +125 if you want it power washed.

      Yes, the engine was seized. I did get it unseized, but the valves etc. are a pretty good mess. I'm sure it can all be reconditioned, but I'm not sure if that's the route I'm going to go. It's a 12HP which might not be quite enough for the B29. I think later models were equipped with a 15HP. I have to check further into this though. I'm hoping to have the engine issue resolved by next spring so I can put it back together and launch. At this point I'm thinking I won't be reconditioning the YSM12. I’d say regrind the valves and head, install a new injector , new starting motor and you will be good to go… Were you aware that there are 5 or 6 Bayfield 29’s at the yacht marina in Lewisporte. Lastly , no , a 12 hp engine is not too small for a Bayfield 29. The classic rule of thumb is 4hp per ton of boat weight. Lastly Nelson Dawe of Cupids once owned that boat, he is a great person, and a good mechanic, I would contact him if you need any advice.

    Beaching legs are adjustable supports attached to the sides of a sailboat, designed to keep it upright when it rests on the seabed during low tide. They typically consist of sturdy metal or wooden legs, fastened to reinforced points on the hull. When the tide is high, these legs are removed or retracted to avoid interference with navigation, then reattached or adjusted when the tide goes out. These legs are particularly popular for sailboats that anchor or dock in tidal waters with significant fluctuations, like those in the UK, Northern Europe, and parts of Canada. Beaching legs are useful for maintenance, hull cleaning, and mooring in shallow tidal areas where the boat would otherwise tip onto its side. Example of a boat with beaching legs: The Cornish Crabber is a popular British sailboat model that often uses beaching legs, as it’s designed for use in shallow, tidal waters. Cornish Crabbers are known for their traditional design and practical features, making them well-suited for beaching. Some models come with bilge keels as an alternative, but beaching legs are commonly used as well.

      I didn't know. Great information. It's very interesting to learn about how things are done in other parts of the world. When we got back in from fishing we beached the boat as best we could and helped he over the edge. Her feet came down in the water that was about 2 inches deeper than the boots were tall. Of coarse they filled instantly. With help she stomped onto shore and said "So now what in the hell am I gonna do?" An old fellow was fishing from shore and saw and heard all of it. How do we attach the motor to the tiller. I have a 23/25 with a gas engine. It works but is a 45 year old Vire I am not a mechanic and outboard would be better for me.

    • @newfoundsailing
      @newfoundsailing 4 месяца назад

      The motor doesn't attach to the tiller. When the outboard is installed, adjust it so that its pushing the boat straight, and tighten (should be a tighter bolt on the shaft somewhere) so that the motor can't move side to side in the way that you'd normally turn the outboard to steer. the motor will push the boat straight and you use the tiller to steer like always. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question. BTW, the Vire is the same motor I removed from my boat. Mine still worked too, but it was very difficult to perform maintenance on. All the best.

    I have faced the same conundrum, found the same information, and settled on the same Panther Marine motor mount, which I have not yet installed, for my John Welsford designed, 15 foot, Tread Lightly sailboat. Thanks for sharing the details of your approach to the installation.

    I see you used the muffler. From what I’ve seen in forums is that those are meant for vehicle installation outside of the vehicle and apparently have a small drain hole for moisture. From what I’ve read that hole can allow exhaust gases to enter the boat and that it shouldn’t be used. Your muffler may be different but I’d suggest investigating that to be sure you’re safe.

      @@newfoundsailinghello, as the other user suggested, not only it have a hole on it but on a boat with longer exhaust line as you have there is no need of silencer, also the flow without it is much better and heater combistion will benefit. No boise at all, noise issue is with 50cm pipe mostly straight on cars or vans, on a boat when you have 1 meter or more with couple of bends the exhaust noise is non existent

    Been missing your videos. Glad to see you back... Someone told me one time, and I'm not sure it's true, that Moose are not indiginous to Newfoundland? If that's so, How the heck did you get them there? Be well and enjoy the great weather.

    • @newfoundsailing
      @newfoundsailing 5 месяцев назад

      That is indeed true. Moose were intentionally introduced via ship, to the island in the early 1900s I believe to provide another protein source for folks. Since then they've multiplied to substantial numbers... I think around 100,000 at some point (don't quote me lol). These days they are as a part of Newfoundlandia as anything else is. The down side is that they do wreak havoc on our highways as many people have been killed or injured due to collisions with them. Thanks for connecting. Take care

    Re the anchor mooring and that metal thimble I find that if you put the rope thru the thimble a 2nd time , making a wrap thru the thimble Then this prevents the rope from chafing, especially if you leave the boat on the mooring for a few days.

    you should practice man over board recovery , throw buoy into the water pretend its one of you and let the other do all the work and thinking getting back to pick buoy , its fun and is important practice pass,s a couple hours time , no one gets on my boat without instruction and having a go , could save my life if its me in the water ,especially if they never done sailing , things go wrong very quick when it does
