The one that got away... - Finding Lake Superior Agates
Просмотров 5457 месяцев назад
Spring time is finally here in Northern Minnesota and we were blessed with a mild winter and lots of rainfall to start off 2024 right. Today we got to visit beach after having quite a few rainy and windy days in a row in the hopes of uncovering some big and small agates. The goal today is to accumulate some small agates for my Etsy page and craft hobby, as well as find some big agates that have...
My FIND of the YEAR!! - Fall Lake Superior Agate Hunt

A few extra weeks without snow is something not to complain about, especially when Fall is my favorite season! Today we got to visit beach after having 5 inches of rainfall that has been mostly untouched after clay cliffs have littered the beach with new rocks that haven't been seen for hundr...

    I just had seen one of your shorts and was wondering what you were up to these days. Yeah, +1 on the eerie-ness of being out there alone. I've hunted alone at night quite a few times and that hypnotizing waves and cold water will make you afraid of the dark, real quick! Congrats on your marriage and I hope you're enjoying the new career 👍

    The big one in the host rock is nice. The agate could come out if you lay it on a big rock and hit the basalt hard with a mini sledge, I think you could get most of the agate out that way without cutting. Little bit of gamble but could work. I use safety glasses when pounding on rocks.

    I made one of these about a month ago. I added a 3 inch fence of wire mesh (aka hardware cloth) around the base to prevent scratching the plexiglass on rocks. I also added a ring of lighting around the rim, which worked well on carpeting at home, but is barely noticeable in the water when the sun is out. So far I used it twice, neither time having great luck (of course, before it was used I imagined it would be a game-changer), but finding a few things. I'll be taking it out again soon hopefully. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    Ahh it also might be a Stromatoparoid. I've never heard of them before, but I have found a couple of pieces here north of the cities. A lot of them are being found this season for some reason.

  • @kirbycraft1302
    @kirbycraft1302 6 месяцев назад

    So here's the thing. I believe that you found a small piece of a mineral that I found just a few years ago, and someone else found a piece a little larger than yours just this season too. Is it soft and powdery feeling?

  • @kirbycraft1302
    @kirbycraft1302 6 месяцев назад

    Man Rod I've been wondering when you were posting again. I miss your videos, refreshingly organic. Hard to find the BOOTS ON THE GROUND types these days. If we weren't living in the cities this season I would probably try it myself, but I'm sure time is the same issue for you. With all of the rain I expected a number of videos with a lot of BIG AGATES. I hope you post a few more before the season is over this year. I enjoyed this one. TY

I made this mistake a few times myself at the beginning until I realized what kind of stones i left behind. I was so disappointed! If the stones are too big, take at least a small part with you.
