I paid £260 for a torch, have I gone mad?
Your video gave me an idea to another comparison video. Mostly for studio setup -> Sync cables, IR (Nikon CLS) and SU-800 (I would highly recommend debao su-800 instead; half the price and longer reach) , Radio triggers (SB-5000, Godox). For old film cameras the only option is sync cables but f6 supports i-ttl so CLS should be an option
Great video. I hope you didn't catch a cold during the recordings 🥶😰
I just wish they didn't cripple the controls compared to the Z8. Give us "Recall Shooting Functions" and "Cycle AF-area mode".
I just took delivery of my 180-600 and did a few quick unplanned shots of birds from the balcony at home. Wow! Tack sharp, beautiful bokeh, fast focus. On a Z8 body. Amazing bit of glass. Well worth the dollars.
Great video, Sean. I own the same version 500 f4 and dream of the 600 TC but your video has inspired me to wait to sell my very expensive soul for the 'Big Beast'. I love the images I get from the 500 and I did own the 800 6.3 but did in fact like my 500 more due to the character (not as clinical and clean looking, also a tad more detail from 500) and faster speed. You've shown us that 600 TC quality comparison so well that I'll definitely be keeping that dream alive!! take care out there and happy shooting.
Great video buddy and very informative... Good to meet you and so pleased that you enjoyed your day in the hide.
Fantastic set up you have there Dean
Hello Sean, Good tests. The one lens I would of like to seen in this test is the 600mm f6.3, while I have the 100mm-400mm and the 600mm 6.3, It would of been interesting to see how much of a difference the focusing speed between the 600mm 6.3 and the 600mm f4. But at over £15000, I do not think I could get one.
I'm doing a test with that lens in December John, it will be very interesting to see the comparison
i love the 500 f4 and 600 f4 AFS but i'll probably get the 600 PF instead. A bit slower but so much lighter and more practical ... 🦘
Hi Roy, I'm testing the 600 f6.3 in December at the same hide. It'll be interesting to see if the low winter light causes me a hitch
Always great to know
Hi Sean, great test as usual 😄
Fascinating to see these two lens compared, and thank you for the real world, in-depth comparisons. Figures are all very well, but nothing compares to seeing the actual pictures. One day, if I win the lottery <sigh> 😂
Firstly 🎉
I have shot on a Nikon D4 for over 2 years now, and it still blows me away the quality of noise it produces at 12800 ISO. Something about this 16.2 MP sensor that is just puts out amazing pictures even in 2024. I had a D3 for about a month before I traded up to the D4, by far much better high ISO handling than the D3. If I had the money for Z9, I will still buy a D4 or D5 and some good DSLR prime glass. The Z9 is on my future upgrade list for sure, but I am enjoying the DSLR discounted pricing to much currently due to Pros dumping DSLR gear and moving to Z mount.
Owning both, I would say the d4s is better in terms of the amount of noise and the quality of the noise compared to the z9. The noise is also much more pleasant, especially on parts that are incorrectly exposed. The z9 noise is jarringly nasty in appearance. However the z9 noise cleans up way easier in editing software on the z9. If you nail your exposure pretty clean images ar high ISO... The D4s was way ahead of its time, and even compared to the D4 was fantastic in low light...
Still recommended?
I sold my Z5 and Z6ii to acquire the Z6iii last week. I am still adjusting my setting but shot it ISO of 64,000 this morning and was able to edit in LR classic for a great result on a very early morning elk
Fascinating, thank you Nathan
👑
I tested the lens extensively and owned it. It is sharp and focus is OK, in line with all other 200-600, 150-600 f6.3, F6.7 and F7.1 lenses. But honestly, nothing about it exited me as I find the focus in low light to slow and unreliable on my Z9. The f6.3 is to slow. It is a good light lens and for that it scores very high. I will never use this lens with any TC as in good light at f9 and f12 shooting a bird at long distance is prone to heat distortion and slow focus. I am not a major bird photographer. for that I use a Sigma 150-600 c that cost 1/3 of the price and the IQ difference is almost non-existent. If I want a compact zoom for travel in this category, the Tamron 150-500 at 50% of the price is a winner. So I stick with my 500 pf and 300 pf and 70-200 f2.8 FL. I alwyas carry at least 2 bodies
Great comparison video! Thank you indeed, Sir!❤.. D.
Great review as always, thank you 🙏🏻
Why did you test the AF at a different aperture for each body ? I'd expect the largest possible aperture to make the missed shots more obvious.
That's simple - I messed up. However, the difference was already very large. When I upgraded from the Z6 to the Z6ii I was really pleased with the improvements. The Z6iii is in a different league completely
Just a technique comment on your dog sport photography. I'm not interested in the Nikon Z6iii because I'm VERY happy with my Z8 and Z9. I regularly do thousands of dog photos, but almost all in dog Conformation shows. I've been trying to improve my understanding of how to shoot good shots in dog Performance events. While, to me, Agility is more pleasing to interact with because of the action available, I struggle to find interesting captures in Obedience and Rally. I think this is at least partially because I've taken lots of training classes in handling dogs in Conformation, but I've only participated as a handler in Barn Hunt within the Performance sector. Having said that I've learned a lot about pleasing Performance images from this video and a few other videos that you have produced. So, despite the lack of interest for me in the Z6iii (I'm a former Z6ii owner.), I say "Bravo!" for your wonderful captures in dog Performance activities.
As a competitor (agility, obedience, rally, K9 Nosework) and photographer, I share your observations here. Massive difference photographing agility, compared to less action-oriented dog sports. All of it’s fun, but agility is a blast 🙂
Thank you so much John, yes it's difficult to capture dynamic images of Obedience and Rally. I do quite a bit of Heelwork to Music and try to capture that relationship and connection between handler and dog, though it's an easier subject to photograph.
I do love photographing K9 Nosework
Love the brilliant Z6iii but its not a Z8 ... 🦘
I have owned the Z6III since launch and can compare it directly with my Z6II and Z9. The Z6III is a massive improvement in terms of AF over the Z6II. It's very close in AF capability to my Z9, the Z9 picks up smaller distant subjects faster however but otherwise they are near indistinguishable in real world use. The Z6III actually trumps even the Z9 in terms of continuous burst speed. At 20fps the Z6III never seems to slow down no matter how long you press the shutter whilst with the Z9 you get a few seconds at the full 20fps before it drops to around 15fps even with the absolutely fastest CF Express cards. The EVF in the Z6III is also superior to that in the Z6II and Z9. I'd say anybody who wants near Z9 performance for half the price the Z6III is a no brainer. I still like the Z6II however, if your shooting style is less AF demanding then the Z6II's AF is perfectly adequate 🙂
I don't think I could agree more
You may be the best Nikon camera reviewer on RUclips, love your videos.
Good grief, thank you
I have 2 Nikon Z9 cameras 📷 but heard good things about the Z8
The Z9 is my go to camera, but the Z8 is a great back up camera for me. Of course a second Z9 would be perfect
Hello Sean ! great comparison. thanks for the hard work. I guess this 200-400 might be super on a D6. Dis you experience this set up ?
Thanks for your review. I also have both the z8 and z9. And also the Z7ii 😂. But I was curious on how you got your ninja to constantly record the evf while taking stills. My ninja stops recording after I take the second picture. The ninja will stay on but it just stops the recording as if it can only take 2 pictures. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. 😀
Thanks a lot for the info, I'm still on the fence between the two because I can't tell if it's worth upgrading my F mount 70-200 2.8 vrii & adapter. Is it worth keeping the F mount 70-200 with adapter and getting the z mount 70-180 or ditching both for the z mount 70-200mm?
The camera sound not in the z6ii?
I love this lens. Best lens for the cost. Even looks great with the 1.4x and 2x teleconvertors.
Is the AF-D 300mm older version lens as sharp ?
Great review.. thanks a lot !
What monopod do you use or would you recommend with the 200-400f4? It's a beast with a lot of weight. I use it with. my nikon Z8
Hola detalle, cuando comparas en video una está a 3.5 y la otra lente a 4.5 y eso ya es una diferencia en profundidad de campo lo cual puede afectar al sistema de enfoque. Saludos. Muchas gracias por el video.
First true test I see. I was undecided. At 3:35 color fringing can be seen on the 70-180 but not in the 70-200. The blue halo of the 70-180 is simply not present.
If Sigma Contemporary camevtoo Nikon, maybe
I know it is 3 yrs later, I fully agree, I have just sold my Z8 as I find the experience sterile, This is where I get shot down by the technology advancement old school fool, But fully agree, I have shot fantastic images using what I refer to as the "old DSLR" focus modes, Single focus point, Group area Focus. I look at the price I pay for a Z9 and Z8 vs the price now of a top quality use Z6ii and Z7ii and as a non -full time professional old school film days and DSLR trained photographer, I am looking forward to interacting with my camera and lens in the process of taking great images, taking control and accepting I am going to miss the shot from time to time, I don't spend my time loading huge number of files on my card and see my MacBook Pro struggling to download massive amounts of files. Yes I am old school, I believe in big wide open f stops and don't need 20-30 fps, pictures of birds that grab a insect mid air has the view time of 3 sec, I still crave for creating images in the late afternoon or early morning , beautiful light and composition. Yes the supper fast bodies can do it for sure, but we are all pulled along to the place where new 600 or 800 mm f6.3 lenses with Bodies blazing away at 20 fps with auto eye detection/subject detection, pro and pre capture modes, have automated AI driven photography is the new art space. That is why my old SUV is 12 yrs old and my mobile phone is 5 generations earlier.
Can’t wait 👍🏻
Whilst waiting impatiently for the promised 200-600 to be released, I bought the 100-400 and TC1.4. Then, recently, I picked up a used 180-600 for £1,500. Whilst I like the handling of the internal zoom format , it does make it a big, heavy lens compared with the 100-400. Initial impressions are that it's good, even with the TC1.4 at 840mm at F9 but I'm still waiting for that killer shot to convince me to keep it and sell the 100-400, or just keep it for landscapes etc. Thanks for the video, Sean, I found it very encouraging.
You need to blink, you really look like a rabbit stuck in the headlights.
If just post on instagram or other social media, 70-180 is for sure better. Size, price, weight etc. but if as a pro or semiprofessional, 70-200 is the choice
I am not convinced. The pictures I see from the 70-180 are all missing 'pop', lack vibrance and there is something unpleasing with the out of focus area's.
Yes, I don’t have any of those lenses, but I’m pretty sure that the 70-200 manages to get more data in the RVB channels, and as such gives more details in the highlights and shadows. On the birds pics, I you concentrate on the pop or 3dimensional effect, it’s seems quite obvious that the 70-200 has a distinctive look, and would say more compliant with what a pro can expect.
I want the 100-400 just for general versatility also the awesome close focusing distance, really elevates the experience if you just want to go on a hike and only take one lens that day
Dear; Sir: Enjoyed your video very much. Thank you for your photos very good indeed. Enjoyed your views on this fine cameras and your personal take on them. God Bless to you. Roger
Hi Sean I am going on safari next year and i have the nikon z 100-400 and am wondering if adding a 1.4 teleconverter would be good enough thought about the 180-600 but seems like redundancy any thoughts?
thanks for this video. can you please test 70-180 with 2x TC? thanks again
I have been pulling my hair out doing this comparison!! I just took my D4s out of my bag and replaced it with the Z9. man have I been eaten alive on the DPreview forms about this comparison. although the camera is faster and autofocus is out of this world, iso definitely failed to impress me. I’m hoping they fix this issue with the Z9h
Great review thanks for sharing, I have the 180-600 on my z9 and it has not let me down.
Nice test btw!
