Measuring the ACOUSTICS of my homestudio | Rebuilding the homestudio pt6
In this series i'm working on perfecting the homestudio and taking it to the next level. And a big part of that are the acoustics, but we can't know what steps to take if we're unsure of the problems, so the first thing we need to do is measure!

    Listening thru my Neve desk and Genelec monitors I could really hear/feel the weight and picked B as the better sounding and feeling. On my iPad the difference was much smaller but………hardware is sooooo much more fun than software any day. The people who don’t believe that I’ve never played with Real hardware and have grown up mixing in the box. I urge everyone to go, try and get some experience mixing with real external processors and hardware. It is so much more rewarding as an engineer. Thank you Thomas for doing this. I can’t imagine how much work it was.

  • @RGD2k
    @RGD2k 4 дня назад

    Totally wrong. What you want to do is have excitation level down so *low* that you can barely hear it. Then you want to extend the sweep so it take a couple minutes, not a couple seconds. Finally, make sure you loopback the excitation signal into the other recording channel - that'll be necessary to correct for the low level. The reason you do this with the sine basically inaudibly quiet, and very slowly, is that otherwise you'll inadvertantly over-excite each and every resonance that is there until it's non-linear. This technique really only works properly assuming a Linear, Time-Invarient system. So if you over-excite, you'll end up mis-measuring each resonance, and it will be a false measurement of the system. Don't worry overmuch about backround noise and SNR - the fact that you can do this over a few minutes means that alone means the recovered frequency domain SNR will be far, far beyond your systems time-domain SNR. A couple minutes duration boosts the SNR so much that it doesn't matter if the 'measured' signal is basically hovering on the noise floor the whole time - it'll be lifted up +100dB easy. And avoiding exciting resonances mean you get the real underlaying system - as it is *without* information-destructive resonance. As for smoothing your frequency domain - total nonsense, why bother? Do you take your photos and apply a gaussian blur to them until they're unrecognisable? Finally, the reason you do this, is so you can calculate a corrective FIR filter using the DRC software. Bonus tip: Do this separately exiting your left and right channels, but when you run the DRC filters for each - use the one you measured with the left speaker to prefilter the signal to the right speaker, and vice versa. It turns out that the measurement actuallly mostly sees the 'other' speaker's dynamic effects, so this is actually correct, and when you have it done right, you'll find you can listen with the volume way down low and still hear all the detail in the prefiltered content. But within an hour or so, air temperature and pressure changes will have changed the accoustics just enough as to where it breaks, because all the precisely measured resonances will have shifted just enough such that the DRC filter is no longer tuned. It is nice until that point though.

    • @ILoveTelecasters
      @ILoveTelecasters 4 дня назад

      Everything looks like a problem when you dont smooth the plot. Yes, it’s more accurate, but it doesn’t reflect how humans percieve sound. The real problems need to be identified, and thats easier using smoothing and waterfall.

    • @ILoveTelecasters
      @ILoveTelecasters 4 дня назад

      Also the rooms frewuency response is time-invariant

    • @ILoveTelecasters
      @ILoveTelecasters 4 дня назад

      Finally, the reason for doing this is to know how to acoustically treat the room. You use the fancy terms, but EQ is not a solution in itself and should not be the first thing to grab

    • @RGD2k
      @RGD2k 3 дня назад

      @@ILoveTelecasters Certainly! And acoustic treatments are effective and a reasonable choice. Digital room correction, especially using a quasi-acausal FIR filter (needs to know the future a little bit, but this effectively just means it needs a little latency - fine for playing back recorded content, and usable with video so long as you use video playing software which accept an audio sync offset adjustment), is not mere 'EQ'. EQ the way it is normally set focuses on 'correcting' dips / non 'flatness' in the frequency magnitude response curve alone. It was super popular back in the 80's and 90's to 'EQ' your sound system flat. But this comes at a steep cost: Any causal EQ filter (esp. IIR, which is the only kind you can build with analogue circuitry) is necessarily going to mangle the *phase* response if you try forcing the frequency response flat like that. But, assuming you have an accurate enough measurement, and you don't try to correct too much... a well calculated DRC filter (there's OSS software for getting it, called, funily enough 'DRC') will correct up to about *half* the perceptual imperfections in both relative timing (ie, phase, really group delay flatness) as well as frequency response. To correct both, necessarily implies an acausal FIR filter. And it can't correct everything perfectly either - but it's surprisingly effective. Not at all like 'EQ', which tends to result in the imaging of the recording getting all mixed up into a 'blob' emanating from between the speakers. Do it right, and not only is the reproduction clearer, but you'll be able to hear all the *direction* information encoded in the time domain of the original recording. This information is due to the relative arrival time of sounds, and your brain also depends on surprisingly fine time details to decode 'which way' it came from. Those details will get mangled by just passing the signal through any 'EQ', even a 'flat' one, because that kind of filter tends to cause a lot of group delay distortion. Sure, each note may now have the same relative loudness, but if the fine-time information is out of order, all the bass will just sound like 'doof doof doof', and you won't be able to hear which direction each sound was coming from. Get this right, and it's called 'transparency': Instead of the reproduced sounds seeming to come from or from between the speakers, they just seem to exist independently. Give it a try! You've already got 99% of the work done, it's just a little extra. Make new recordings, but like I said, set the volume way down low, and make the sweep longer. You might hear a little of the sine as it goes through the 1k-3k range. Do each pass out one speaker at a time, with the other side with zero signal, and use the second recording channel to get an analoque loopback of the excitation channel. Go find and download drc-fir version 3.2.3. It hasn't changed in 5 years. Use lsconv to extract the impulse response from the recordings with both measurement and reference channels, then use drc with just the 'normal' drc settings to get a filter from the measurement. You do this twice to get two filters. Then just load them into any FIR engine, with the left/right swapped or not (try each). You then just play audio through 'em, you should find much more transparency, at least for as long as the correction remains valid. It can't correct for early reflections very well, so the room treatment to get rid of those is important, as is keeping the distance relationship between the listening position and all drivers relatively constant, like you have. The theoretical performance for what *can* be corrected is more heavily weighted towards the base, but this is very useful, since most crossovers can't keep sounds like kickdrums properly in order, because so much of the energy is so widely dispersed across the frequency domain. So the DRC will tend to help with such sounds the most, and this has the side effect of making it less work for your brain to decode where those sound like they're coming from. This is even more relevant if you have a passive cross over and a subwoofer, since the crossover's effect on phase will get mostly fixed by this kind of correction, meaning it makes a surprising difference when implemented with 2.1 systems. Just make sure the sub is an equal distance from both stereo speakers, and same with the measurement mic. Anecdotally, I have had people tend to talk 'under' a system set up this way playing at a party. They kept giving confused glances towards the corner of the room with the speakers, as if expecting to see a live performer there. Usually at a party of uni students like that, everyone just tries to talk over the music and each other, but the effect was strong enough that the drunks kept unconsciously trying to be 'polite' to the performer! Lots of confused looks, and complements about the sound system. It wasn't up loud.

    Well, I actually think that that's pretty close to how analog gear works. Because analog gear colored sound very differently, depending on the age of the gear, manufacturing and production tolerances, you're never going to see two 1073s ever exactly the same in the real world. So having plugins that are modeled after two different 1073s are going to give two different results.

    Regarding the high end changing: when you measured you were sitting close to the mic, your proximity might change the response of you mic and your breath too. I was once calibrating my speakers, left and right individually with a sine wave and had a VU meter monitoring an Omni mic in the sweet spot. I reached for the volume on my monitor controller and noticed the level of the VU changing due to my close proximity to the mic, even tho the mic was in between me and the speaker. I moved around a bit and the VU dipped and raised 1-3 dB in tandem with my movement.

    • @thomasvopstal

      Hmm im pretty sure thats not it. I measured while sitting down in the video, yes, but before that also while standing 2 meters away. Also in the previous setup the monitors did exactly the same. It happens when both monitors are on, so i’m assuming it is a phase issue somewhere i gotta figure out.
