2005 Otis Williams live singing "Hearts of Stone"
Video clip I shot nearly 20 years ago at NC Beach Music Day at the State Capital in Raleigh. Not to be confused with Otis Williams of the Temptations, Otis Williams of the Charms recorded on the King and Deluxe labels. This is their biggest hit “Hearts of Stone” which was recorded back in 1954 and reached number 1 on the R&B charts for nine consecutive weeks, sold over 1 million copies, and earned gold record status.
The group had other successful hits that became Carolina Beach Music jukebox classics such as “Two Hearts” and “Ling Ting Tong”

Carolina Beach Music band The Poor Souls sing "Brazil" live in 1991
Просмотров 5624 месяца назад
Charlotte North Carolina produced a lot of local bands on the Carolina Beach Music scene but none were perhaps as popular in the 1980s as the Poor Souls. Fronted by batsman Bobby Smith and high tenor Butch Stone, the Poor Souls thrilled shag dance crowds with covers of classic rhythm & blues tunes such as “White Cliffs of Dover”, “Just a Gigolo”, “It Ain’t the Meat It’s the Motion”, “Over the R...
2005 Sonny Turner of the Platters sings "With This Ring"
Просмотров 475 месяцев назад
When most people think of the Platters 50s ballads like “Only You” or “The Great Pretender” come to mind. These were sung by Platters lead Tony Williams. But for Carolina Beach and Shag Dance aficionados they think of the 1960s Platters. In 1959 Tony Williams left the Platters and an audition of 100 candidates was held to find his replacement. A singer from Fairmont West Virginia by the name of...

Clarence “Frogman” Henry passed away this week at the age of 87. Best known for his 1957 song “Ain’t Got No Home” which earned him the moniker “Frogman”, he was a legend of New Orleans rhythm and blues. Frogman’s biggest charting Top 5 hit was “I Don’t Know Why I Love You But I Do” from 1961. A few years later in 1964 a group called the Beatles asked Frogman to be their opening act on their 196...
Ruth Brown & Bill Pinkney at 2003 South Carolina Beach Music Day
Просмотров 136 месяцев назад
In 2001 South Carolina signed a bill naming beach music the official music of South Carolina and held its first annual Beach Music Day. (The Shag was named the State dance of South Carolina many years earlier in 1984.) Many of the great 1950s and 60s soul, rhythm & blues, aka beach music artists hailed from the Carolinas. It is even speculated that the name of Atlantic Records was an homage to ...
