- Born in Henderson North Carolina, Benjamin Earl Nelson aka Ben E King joined a group called the 5 Crowns in 1958 in Harlem. In a lucky break, the manager of the Drifters fired the entire group and needed new singers to step in so the 5 Crowns became the Drifters. The Drifters featuring Ben E King on lead waxed this classic tune in 1960. It was the "B" side of the 45 release but according to legend Dick Clark is the one who flipped it over and realized that the B side was the hit. This video is from my personal VHS archive from a show in Charleston SC in 1997.
