2005 Sonny Turner of the Platters sings "With This Ring"

When most people think of the Platters 50s ballads like “Only You” or “The Great Pretender” come to mind. These were sung by Platters lead Tony Williams. But for Carolina Beach and Shag Dance aficionados they think of the 1960s Platters. In 1959 Tony Williams left the Platters and an audition of 100 candidates was held to find his replacement. A singer from Fairmont West Virginia by the name of Sonny Turner was selected and the new Platters was born. During the 60s they had numerous hits which topped the Carolina Beach Music charts including “I Love You 1000 Times,” “Washed Ashore,” and “With This Ring.” Here is a video clip I shot of the late great Sonny Tuner in Raleigh North Carolina singing his 1967 hit “With This Ring”
