You will have fun fitting those floor panels, I know I did 🤣. I've got a few suggestions for you which may help. Here goes... Gloves - mig ones are thick and bulky so you can't feel much. I use tig welding gloves as they are a lot thinner and easier to use. Gas, hmmm. Ever thought about using flux core wire? I switched to flux core years ago as you don't end up needing gas. Try putting a light near your work piece as it can greatly improve your accuracy before striking that arc. Finally, ever thought about using a dremel? Quite simply, don't. Those things don't last 5 minutes and I literally got through 8 of them! I found a far more reliable tool that does the same job and cost less. Hope this helps.

Kim, It's cool watching this project. Should you need it, you are more than welcome to borrow my welding gauntlets, leather apron and cap. Did you see how the weld changes as you take on vertical angles? The amperage is smaller in the vertical and overhead angles and you can use a triangular weave pattern with the torch to work the molten pool. The panel looks like a great fit. All the best with it and let me know if you need the kit. I'm only a stones throw away. 👍

I think your decision to go for it and use new panels to clear off that nasty pastiche of repairs is the way to go, even if its a long and hard way. The only real thing you want to be "concourse" when you have a daily driveable and enjoyable classic like this, is chassis, suspension and brakes. All the rest is just for looks and can be done any time later, should you wish to, even a smoking engine. Just don't spare any effort in the body & structure, specially now that you went all the way to strip it down. Better have it off the road some months more, than later driving it with the regret of knowing what lays beneath the paint in some places. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it! 😉

Hi 👋🏻 I do feel for you I've been there myself. Does it get any easier? No , with my Rs turbo for every job completed 3 more jobs lay in its wake . The classic 90's bodges , I try to laugh them off. Today's perception is it has to be perfect or original , don't listen to them, what people don't realise is the parts required for MK3/4 escorts just aren't available . Very little being reproduced like on mk1&2's , with a older mk1&2 you can build a whole car with parts off the shelf , and there cheap. I know what gets you thinking, 'I've done this much while I'm here Il just do that or I need to make a better job of this . Like you say there's no point spending £20k on a car worth £20k . If I costed my own time I probably spent £10k already, what can we say it's a hobby. At least we will have enjoyment from the work we put in and we will be able to drive them without having to worry. The alternative is spending £40k plus on a garage queen , how crazy is that 😂

You’re doing great with it. I’d have freaked at discovering all that unexpected stuff. I’d buy as many panels as I could (decent ones) to reduce the burden because there’s so much to do. It’s more work, but what about removing the wing for better access? You’ll need to think about what you’re going to do when the weather turns. You might even want one of those rotisserie devices when doing the floors. Have you costed it out as far as you can? Obviously these cars are relatively high value, so that works in your favour. Thanks for showing us your project, much respect to you.

Been waiting for this. I don't care if it's not concourse standard. You'd want a new body shell. I love Fords with sharp edges like this and the Mk3 Cortina but these sharp edges tend to mean rust later in life. I’ve been watching your videos with interest. I also have a black RS Turbo, on a G registration that I bought around two years ago. Interestingly I bought the car in the 90’s, new, after driving a Fiesta XR2, and I drove the RS around for 7 years before selling it to my Dad, who was around the age of 64. He had it for about 5 years before selling it on, after giving me the chance to buy it back, for a new Nissan Micra. I didn’t buy it back, for many reasons. However 2 years ago it came up on Ebay, not that I was looking for it, just stumbled across it, and after a lot of deliberation with various members of the family I decided to purchase it again, paying more for it this time around than last. It was basically original, to look at, although it had been lowered with Coil overs on the front, bigger brakes that didn’t seem to work very well, bigger intercooler, twin fans, spot lights missing etc etc. So it’s been my mission to get it back to how it should be, which I nearly have, replacing all the suspension with standard, brakes back to standard, original intercooler and fan spot lights etc. Still more to do though although most of it is cosmetic, like replacing all the power coated black bits under the bonnet back to silver. It drives well considering its age and it does turn heads. So watching your videos, I can totally understand your frustrations but you are doing very well and I look forward in seeing your progress, keep going!

Nicely done. When I repaired cars I went the opposite way; instead of trying to make them look original, I found seats from the scrapyard that would fit (with a bit of encouragement) but look different and be more comfortable. Headliners were the worst. I could never figure out how to put them back so I would glue acoustic fibre mat to the underside of the roof and fix the material to it using dozens of pins.

I didn't see you test the wiper motor with a 12v battery. But every video is more professional than the previous. What sort of microphone do you need? Plugs into a phone, laptop? Wireless lapel mics are available but you have to position the mic carefully so it's not brushing against you as you move. Get one with a rechargeable battery and charge it after every use.

Your voice sounds much better and clearer in these lastest videos, plus you really nailed the sections to speed up or explain. Love to see the progress on the RS, weird that those panels are hard to find as they should be the same as in any regular MK4,even the 4-door. Perhaps search in breakers rather than online sellers? In my experience breakers have loads more of what they usually advertise online, just need to ask.
