Legacy/Hunter G70 ON Block Rotor

Welcome back friends. In this video we are taking a look at the Legacy/Hunter G70 golf rotor. This Block Rotor is a 1" opposing nozzle full circle rotor which shares a striking similarity to the Hunter I50/I40. The G70 series from Hunter provided a cost effective sprinkler with a top down construction that was capable of being short range for tees and green as well as long range for close in fa...

Welcome back for another one friends! Today we take a deeper look into the RB 14070 impact. 3/16" range nozzle with an 1/8" spreader, this sprinkler gets great coverage while not requiring a 10hp pump to run! I am using two fluent power 1hp 1100GPH sprinkler pumps and a one inch city supply line coming in at 58PSI to the sprinkler inlet. Thanks for tuning in and if you enjoyed the video please ...

Hey guys ! Thanks for tuning in. Here we have a NOS 47 in a cast iron case. operating at 35psi woth a 1/4" nozzle. This thing throws water ! Most likely used on golf courses around the greens and tees , you would see them operate at 60 to 80 psi ! I'm feeding it with a 1 inch main line and a 1200 gph booster pump.

Great job really enjoyed this! I always liked the Western Brass locking collars over the Rain Bird which had a nut and lock tight made them a nightmare to adjust or get off the bearing.
Lots of side splash coming off the sprinkler on the left side of the sprinkler upon impact. This seems to defeat the purpose of having the "precision jet" to direct all spray away from traffic. I mean really, check out the top-down slo-mo view in the video at about 4:30 . The side spray appears to even be shooting BEHIND the sprinkler head - right where traffic would be if the impact was located on a riser adjacent to the highway. This is either a really bad design flaw, or a poorly soldered tube, in my humble opinion. Sorry for the rant.😔
@@1caculusman Good eye , I was running these at over 70 PSI which no doubt contributed to the splash you’re talking about. And correct , the RB tube design was more circular allowing more water to be directed out the tube, the WB design wasn’t as refined. If you’re driving on the interstate a foot away from this sprinkler on a riser doing over 60mph you may get some splash on you. Still , compared to a spoon drive which directs ALL the water to the side, this would have been a massive improvement.
Very nice display of the modern Western Brass heads, they have the stainless trips and still working well. The CalTrans special head was very wide spread around here for many years after Western became the supplier and took the show from the Rain Bird 35PJ SPECIAL with locking arc friction collars.... Now all we see is Hunter or Rain Bird gear drive heads stole the show! Nice find, Thanks for sharing!
@@kerryvinci5287 thank you very much for the comment ! I can imagine going from something like this to a gear drive head. So no boring! Haha
Great movement and great coverage! Excellent presentation explaining the difference between the Cal DOT locking collars and the regular collars. Thanks for sharing…
@@oldschoolsprinklers9000 thank you !
Where did you get this?
@bluestingerborg on ebay from a US Seller. Iv never see one before
Really great explanation on how these operated. I was responsible for some of these making their way onto golf courses. The partnership that Hunter and Buckner created in that company was very short-lived, but brought the Hunter sprinkler tech together with the world class Buckner controller tech. 1999 would have been right after Hunter bought that portion of Buckner after a few years of partnership. Small thing to consider, if you’re talking about use on a tee block that would make sense. For a block system, they made a G70 without the valve assembly on the side. Looked the same, just none of that stuff hanging off it.
@@antiquesprinklers Thank you for the history ! I am in awe of how much knowledge you have to offer in this field ! I have only seen a couple pop up for sale
@@MikeMac89you did a great job with this.
Great explanation, generally, of the sprinklers and particularly of the locking collars CalTrans spec’d. Did that one have Cal DOT stamped on the bearing? They did that for at least awhile. Rain Bird had that spec locked up for years before Western Brass unseated them. It’s really fortunate to find two of these that haven’t lost their anti backsplash tubes. Western Brass had a problem with that. Great footage of them running.
@@antiquesprinklers It does have the CAL DOT stamp! I had to re solder the joint , it was loose when I received it. I don’t have near the knowledge you do but still try ! Thanks Bill
That looks like a cross between a 6700 series nelson and a 15111 series. The head even looks similar to a Beta II. Interesting, didnt know AT even existed.
@NelsonBigGunP200Fan Me either , I have a few Nelsons and a 15111 so I may do a comparison video. It's neat how many manufacturers used the same designs. It's deffinitly a quick little sprinkler.
Nice! I have a few of these but they have spoon arms.
@@Irrigation_guy those would be cool!
Awesome video! I’m getting more into golf block rotors and how they all work.
@TheKillionC They are fun , especially since you don't need a massive amount of water to run them normally. This technically isn't a true "block" rotor because it has a valve in head. Normally block rotors will be controlled by a single valve to switch on multiple heads. Like the RB 550/552 and 352.
@@MikeMac89 I would love to find a RB 352. I have a 552, but I haven’t tried running it yet.
@TheKillionC it's the 351 sorry ! I have one but the trigger is broken so it's only full circle. It's basically a 5500 in a block case. Super useful
@@MikeMac89 the 5500 is probably one of the few rotors I don’t have, but I should definitely become more familiar with it.
@TheKillionC I spent about 5 years trying to find one up here in Canada. I have 3. One stainless non potable and the other are plastic risers. Pretty robust rotor
Nice! The rubber cover ones are hard to find
@@sprinklercraft thank you ! I lucked out and found a couple on ebay
That 14070 runs great. Would have loved for Rain Bird to call it a 40, but I’m sentimental. Great short.
It does ! It still has grass caught in the spring! I have an acquaintance who runs a course near me and he has tons of old sprinklers they he doesn't use. I was surprised that after years of just sitting in the trees it fired right up!
Antique, sometime on one of your awesome videos where you talk about the sprinklers before you show them in operation, can you do a detailed video on these Rainbird 3/4” impacts, the whole family. I’ve never understood the whole #30,#40, 14070 product offering and how they differed and why they were all different offerings from rainbird. If you have each of these and a #35 part circle it might make a nice video! Thanks!
@@tator05 that’s a very good idea. They also changed over the span of their production lives. Lots to dig into.
Really great photography!
Thank you Bill !
very nice and new as well. Thank you for sharing the details as well.
And what makes this better than the hunter? Or Rain bird?
@johngrinnell nothing really, these are just cool rotors because they have an oil bathed gear box instead of water lubricated ! Just a different way of doing things , wernt as reliable thats for sure
@@MikeMac89 interesting, well you have a new subscriber now!
@@johngrinnell appreciate it!!
Thank you so much Sir!!!
Why the music background while talking ?
@@duwaynemathews4172Just thought it would be nice. Maybe a little loud?
Gee, it looks like it's built to put out water like a shrunken down RB 65D or maybe even an 85. I wonder if it's the evolution of the RB 45 from the 40's/50's. Thanks for the great videography! Love the slo-mo.
Hey thanks for the comment ! You're right ! These compact rotors were built small to fit in the case but came with huge nozzles !! They made a slightly bigger one that would be comparable to the 65 , then they made the 91DR which was massive to go with the 70E and bigger. This guy would be in-between the 35 and the 65.
Great looking Rainbird impact.
Thank you !
Really great to see the season start for you, and what a great offering! The 47 is an incredible sprinkler, and your photography captures it beautifully. I’m impressed that you’re getting that performance with a dynamic pressure of 35psi. The range of operation of these things, along with the extensibility through swapping internals, as you pointed out, is a testament to Rain Bird’s engineering. Loved the tour of the internal. You described and showed all the points perfectly, especially what a bear these are to adjust if you don’t know how it’s supposed to be done. Super great job!
@antiquesprinklers thank you Bill ! This was a little rushed but I had to get something started this year! I was also impressed with the performance. The riser kept falling with the weight of the lid and head tho , it was on the edge of not working. I'm looking at a bigger pump for my golf rotors. I have access to a 1000gal IBC tote for water storage to pull from. Obviously won't run a big golf rotor for long but it will make running them possible !!
@@MikeMac89that will open up a huge number of sprinklers, even if you’re running them for ten to fifteen minutes, tops. I’ve thought about doing something like that for a few years. I have a corner of the yard it could sit in. By the way, your lawn looks amazing.
@antiquesprinklers yes , I have about 10 rotors I can't run haha. They sure look pretty on the shelf though ! I was thinking of putting mine underground for space savings. Ahh the mind wanders doesn't it ! Thank you , most of my free time in the summer goes towards the lawn. It's a labour of love.
He’s back!!!!!
Iv been lurking in the shadows for a while 😂. Hopefully be back to my one long form video a week now.
Nice 47! It runs well. I have one as well but it needs a internal seal, it leaks pretty bad.
@@NelsonBigGunP200Fan thanks ! I was lucky and found this one. They are great units.
Where did you find or buy the holdup tool
It came in a case of 8005 rain bird rotors but you can buy it on thier website. You might even find it at home depot or Lowes
How does the cap come off?
It should just pull off with a little but of force
why did the first one sneeze
It has a check valve in the head and there would have been air in the line before the water got there so it pops up under air pressure a bit
A Back flow preventer? Of course I did ;)
Did you place a PVB at the supply main as it comes out of the house?
Such a cool video!!! Music dubbing and editing - bravo sir!! I can’t think of a sound a summer without the noise (in the background) of attained impact sprinkler in the distance. Thanks again for sharing this!!
Hi Mike, how can I build some of these PVC systems with valves? Thanks!
Hey , they're super easy to build. Get a 10' length of sch40 PVC and some fittings. I used 1/2" for this one but you can use 1" as well. Get two Tee fittings with glue connections on all three ends and one Tee with a center NPT threaded connection for your sprinkler , three end caps and then a PVC to NPT coupler for your water connection , a ball valve and then a NPT to garden hose connector for your garden hose to screw onto. Cut your SCH 40 PVC to whatever length you want depending on how big you want your base to be , glue it all together with some PVC cement and put your valve on the end. I have a video on my channel of me building a 1" one. It's in my live videos.
@@MikeMac89 Amazing, thanks kindly for the reply!
Great video. I may not be a fan of these non-impact pop-up rotors, but you did show a lot of unique advantages built into the design. Thank you.
Thanks Randy ! I'm a bit busy this year but hope to get some good impacts out soon!!
I have some Part Circle of these sprinklers and many nozzles
AG store near me has some new in box. Been collecting dust for years. They are heavy weight and have a tight spring in them.
Really ? I wish I could find a box of them ! How much do they want for them ? I'd be interested is grabbing them up !
Same light green as what I have in my back yard.
I like them !
Rain Bird AG-5 (Maxi-Paw) Impack Rotor #rainbird #irrigation #sprinkler #Impact
This is probably a silly question but would you be interested in trading/selling any of your sprinklers? I have several that are rare gems you could say. Nelson rain gear rotor w/ yellow nozzles, Hunter I-50, K-Rain Dial-A-Nozzle, I-25 High speed/I-40 High speed. Lots of others. You specifically have two in your collection that I love. 😩
I would be interested yes ! I don't have an I-50. And I didn't know they made high speed versions of the 25 and 40! Email me michaelmactavish89@gmail.com
Thanks for the info. I've got two old brass Rainbirds but don't know very much about them. I'm using a PJ in the yard right now because it's easier to put the water where I need it. Its a smaller unit. I also have a 35, but isn't convenient to use due to the spoon shooting water 90 degrees to the nozzle.
The 25PJ was by far the most versatile smaller model. Could really put the water out there and some models had the splash arm or the Difuser screw to reduce distance. The 35 spoon drive does get water everywhere haha
Hello. What setting would i use with a 2.0 nozzle to make the turf bird move super fast?
I'm not sure you could make it go super fast with the 2.0 nozzle. The stator basically limits the flow to the nozzle based in size so the correct amount goes thru the stator and keeps rotation constant. By forcing more water thru the stator you will get a faster rotation. So in theory, if you had a 2.0 nozzle and set the stator to the 1.5 setting technically you'd get a little faster rotation.
Where do you find all these old sprinklers?
Mostly on Ebay , and fellow sprinkler enthusiasts.
why they don’t maje it green now? im considering painting the cap and case…
I'm assuming the green dye in the plastic is more expensive than the black. They made a few different shades of the most green plastic over the years. Also could be a market specific offering.
Where the pt2?
It will be coming this summer at some point. It's only May
I love the older pj arms
Great video. I have a couple of questions. It appears based on the top of the unit, I too have the rps75. 1. Is this the only way to tell between the rps 50 and rps 75. 2. What is easiest way to know how tall I need the replacement to be whether it’s a 4” or 6”? Do I see how far it sticks up while spr8nler is on or should I pull out the entire unit from the canister? Is that a 6” in your video? Thanks again for video
Hey ! Thanks for the comment. I don't have any experience with the RPS 50 but to me it sounds like it might be a 1/2 inch rotor instead of 3/4". Easiest way is to measure the head in operation. A 4" head will be almost 4.5 , 5" tall with the canister. This is the 4" model shown in the video.
@@MikeMac89 thanks Mike! I just pulled it up, it’s is indeed the 4” rps75…your video was INVALUABLE!!! I happen to have that tool to pull it up…came up 4’ 3/8”.
Not trying to be harsh here but you look like Bruce Wilson the guy that does will it starts
Maybe he looks like me ?
Thank you for a good description of these K heads that I just had put in! The actual K company video isn't nearly as clear on how to do maintenance on them as yours! I think I can adjust them now!!
WOW! I remember seeing these at an elementary school I went to about 6-7 years ago now. The janitor even gave me one as I recall. I don't have it anymore though.
These were appealing rotors and much higher end as opposed to the 5000 series. I was searching for these years ago after they got discontinued. These probably weren't selling as much as the 5000 and the 5000 is cheaper to produce. Personally not a fan of the 5000. Rain Bird's 1" rotors are the better option if you have the pressure and flow to run them.
What year is your lawn bird? The latest one I found was made in feburary of 1993 and it has the adjustable stator.
I will have to check later today , its put away right now. I want to say 91 or 92 but I may be wrong.
@@MikeMac89 It's really cool what you got. You have what the pictures on the box shows. My R-50 shrub has this same style logo on the turret and utilizes the same stator nozzle disc. I don't think their was a date on it. It must've been marketed on the Commercial side briefly and as old as your Lawn Bird Rotor. I also find it interesting that they claimed these were "quiet". I think they were mistaking these for the CCR-2. Which I believe were sold briefly as well in the early 90s.
@devinc.brewer4437 thanks ! I do have the boxes I'll dig them out tonight and post them!
@@devinc.brewer4437 quiet they most certainly are not haha
Where do you get the kits from?
The nozzle kits? They come with the sprinkler at purchase most times.
Great video! Thank you.
